{"id":49613,"date":"2015-12-30T10:44:54","date_gmt":"2015-12-30T15:44:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/blog\/?p=49613"},"modified":"2015-12-30T10:44:54","modified_gmt":"2023-08-19T05:31:37","slug":"wealthy-church-moves-to-stop-cabelas-from-selling-high-cap-guns-mags","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wealthy-church-moves-to-stop-cabelas-from-selling-high-cap-guns-mags\/","title":{"rendered":"Wealthy Church Moves to Stop Cabela\u2019s from Selling \u2018High-Cap\u2019 Guns, Mags"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A wealthy New York church with a small stake in Cabela\u2019s, which specializes in hunting, fishing, shooting, camping merchandise, wants to stop the outfitter from selling \u201chigh-capacity\u201d magazines and firearms.<\/p>\n<p>New York\u2019s historic Trinity Wall Street church owns 4,600 shares in Cabela\u2019s and is hellbent on forcing the retailer to stop selling many widely popular and commonly owned firearms and magazines.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHigh-capacity weapons are especially dangerous,\u201d wrote the Trinity leadership in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.trinitywallstreet.org\/sites\/default\/files\/pictures\/PROPOSED%20POLICY%20FOR%20FIREARM%20SALES.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"wealthy-church-moves-to-stop-cabelas-from-selling-high-cap-guns-mags\" title=\"Wealthy Church Moves to Stop Cabela\u2019s from Selling \u2018High-Cap\u2019 Guns, Mags\">proposal calling<\/a> for a shareholder vote on the matter at the annual meeting next year. \u201cThey are used in mass killings and are \u2018crime guns\u2019 because they can kill many people quickly and without reloading. They reduce opportunities for people to flee or overwhelm a shooter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCabela\u2019s shareholders, the owners of the Company, should easily conclude that Cabela\u2019s sale of high-capacity handguns and rifles worsens public safety and poses a clear danger to Cabela\u2019s reputation as a family destination store,\u201d the proposal continued.<\/p>\n<p>Specifically, the church wants Cabela\u2019s to stop selling any firearm or magazine that can fire more than eight rounds without reloading.<\/p>\n<p>If you remember, this isn\u2019t the first time Trinity has used its stakeholder position to foist an anti-gun agenda on a business that sells firearms. Retail giant Walmart has also seen the gun-grabbing wrath of Trinity.<\/p>\n<p>However, Walmart\u2019s decision to stop selling AR-15s and other tactical looking rifles was based on \u201cmarket conditions\u201d \u2014 not politics or pressure from the church, according to company executives. Hmm, that still sounds a bit fishy to me. You can read more about that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/blog\/why-walmarts-decision-to-stop-selling-ar-15s-is-unavoidably-political\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"wealthy-church-moves-to-stop-cabelas-from-selling-high-cap-guns-mags\" title=\"Wealthy Church Moves to Stop Cabela\u2019s from Selling \u2018High-Cap\u2019 Guns, Mags\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In any event, we\u2019ll see how Cabela\u2019s responds. So far, management has not issued a statement.<\/p>\n<p>It should be noted that there is no legal definition for \u201chigh capacity.\u201d For many gun owners, \u201chigh capacity\u201d firearms and magazines is a relative term. It really depends on the platform. For example, one could argue that a 30-round magazine for an AR-15 is standard capacity. Likewise, a 17-round magazine for a Glock 17 is standard capacity. A high-capacity magazine for an AR-15 would be 100-round drum and for a Glock 17, well, heck you can get a 100 round magazine for that as well.<\/p>\n<p>More importantly, gun owners see both the pros and cons of having larger mags. Obviously, in a gunfight, the more rounds the better. But it can get reductive after a certain point. An extra-large, unwieldy magazine can slow one down, effect one\u2019s accuracy and impair concealment. Plus, the really big drums are more prone to jamming, which is not something anyone wants to come across in the heat of the moment.<\/p>\n<p>In terms of lethality, more rounds do indeed make one more lethal. But what the church leadership fails to consider is the other side of the coin. That is the law-abiding good guys with the guns who need them for self-defense and other traditionally lawful purposes. I want my GF to have her optimal tool for self-defense within the home and in the public square, be that an AR-15 with a 30-round magazine and\/or a Glock 17 with an extended mag. The Second Amendment protects her ability to choose what firearm and what magazine is best for her in-home and carry needs. To restrict that right, to limit her options only puts her in greater danger.
