(<em>Photo: ABC News<\/em>)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe sole purpose of these types of weapons is to kill as many people as quickly as possible,\u201d said Cicilline in a <a href=\"https:\/\/cicilline.house.gov\/press-release\/cicilline-and-121-house-colleagues-introduce-assault-weapons-ban-2015\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"house-dems-introduce-assault-weapons-ban-of-2015\" title=\"House Dems Introduce 'Assault Weapons Ban of 2015'\">press release<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is unconscionable that we continue to allow military-style weapons to be bought and sold while mass shootings are growing more common,\u201d he added. \u201cThis bill is an important first step that will restore some sanity to the way we treat guns in the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Assault Weapons Ban of 2015 will prohibit the sale, transfer, production, and importation of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Semi-automatic rifles and handguns with a military-style feature that can accept a detachable magazine;<\/li>\n<li>Semi-automatic rifles and handguns with a fixed magazine that can hold more than 10 rounds;<\/li>\n<li>Semi-automatic shotguns with a military-style feature;<\/li>\n<li>Any ammunition feeding device that can hold more than 10 rounds;<\/li>\n<li>And 157 specifically-named and listed firearms.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Assault Weapons Ban of 2015 will also attempt to close what gun-grabbers refer to as the \u201cCharleston Loophole,\u201d the existing law that allows a sale or transfer to proceed if a buyer\u2019s background check is not completed within three days. According to the language of the bill, the background check period would be extended to 14 days.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, if it is determined that a gun was sold to a prohibited individual, the FBI will notify federal, state, and local law enforcement so that the firearm can be confiscated and the buyer can be prosecuted for violating the law.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would like to commend my friend, Congressman David Cicilline, for leading this effort and introducing this life-saving legislation,\u201d said Congresswoman Janice Hahn.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_49202\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/ABCWashPostPoll_AssaultWeaponsTable_1216.png\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"house-dems-introduce-assault-weapons-ban-of-2015\" title=\"House Dems Introduce 'Assault Weapons Ban of 2015'\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-49202\" title=\"House Dems Introduce 'Assault Weapons Ban of 2015'\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-49202\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/ABCWashPostPoll_AssaultWeaponsTable_1216-400x273.png\" alt=\"Looks like people are finally catching on! (Photo: <em>ABC News<\/em>)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe guns we are talking about today are not for hunting nor for target practice\u2014they are weapons of war,\u201d continued Hahn. \u201cThese assault weapons are designed to inflict the maximum amount of death and injury and have no place on our streets. Frankly, we should be ashamed that Congress allowed the original Assault Weapons Ban to expire in the first place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Last week, I wrote a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/blog\/ny-times-calls-for-gun-bans-eliminating-categories-of-weapons-ammunition\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"house-dems-introduce-assault-weapons-ban-of-2015\" title=\"House Dems Introduce 'Assault Weapons Ban of 2015'\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pretty good piece<\/a> on why banning black guns makes no sense. You should check it out.<\/p>\n<p>What I found while putting together this piece that I think is really interesting is that public support for banning black weapons is waning (as you see in the charts illustrated above). People are beginning to understand that an AWB is a red herring, a distraction from the real causes of not just gun violence but all violence: gangs, drugs, radical ideologies\/religions and mental health.<\/p>\n<p>To repeat a common analogy, we didn\u2019t ban cars when we wanted to reduce vehicular fatalities. We targeted drunk drivers. Likewise, we shouldn\u2019t ban popular firearms to reduce gun-related violence. We ought to use our available resources to target gangsters, drug dealers, terrorists and the mentally deranged.
