Actor Kurt Russell found himself being dragged into the gun debate during an interview with Jeffrey Wells of Hollywood Elsewhere<\/a>\u00a0last week.<\/p>\n

Wells, an apparent supporter of tougher gun laws, attempted to back Russell into a corner on the issue, suggesting that gun control was the only answer to the various threats we face today.<\/p>\n

Russell scoffed at that idea, noting that you can’t “control the behavior of people that are dead set on taking your way of life away from you.” Instead, Russell alluded to the reality that one needs to be prepared to stand one’s ground and defend one’s way of life by any means necessary.<\/p>\n

He also made a great hockey analogy, which was tantamount to saying that we shouldn’t be living in fear of evildoers or criminals, they should be the one’s living in fear of us. \u00a0In short, we need to flip the script. We need to instill fear, not invite it.<\/p>\n

It seems the most logical way to flip the script is to consistently remind the thugs out there that we are armed and ready to confront them. \u00a0If they attempt to take what’s ours, we will meet them with force and say, as Mr. Russell did, “\u2018No, dude, that\u2019s not gonna happen. That\u2019s just not gonna happen.'”<\/p>\n

Below is the exchange:<\/p>\n

Wells:<\/strong> I think there\u2019s a feeling about shootings and violence right now\u2026I think it\u2019s different in 2015 than it was in the mid \u201990s. But Quentin is still playing the same game more or less.<\/p>\n

Russell:<\/strong> Well, Quentin does what he does. He\u2019s painting a picture, writing, telling a story\u2026like a filmmaker. But to mix and match reality with fantasy is something I don\u2019t understand but that\u2019s just me. I think we should understand the difference. To mix today\u2019s politics with, in this case, a tale about, uh, a fictional tale about the Civil War\u2026<\/p>\n

Wells:<\/strong> I\u2019m not talking about politics. I\u2019m talking about a ground-level, water-table\u2026a feeling in people\u2019s bones. People are genuinely\u2026between Paris and San Bernardino the idea of sudden violence becoming a normal, day-to-day aspect coming from the gun culture and everything else\u2026it\u2019s a different vibe, you know?<\/p>\n

Russell:<\/strong> I don\u2019t understand concepts of conversation [about] the gun culture. We\u2019ve lived with guns since, what, the 7th Century or something? I don\u2019t know.<\/p>\n

Wells:<\/strong> Well, I think we all know\u2026guns are a trope. Not a trope but a totem, a metaphor that disenfranchised white guys need\u2026it makes them feel good about themselves.<\/p>\n

Russell:<\/strong> You can say what you want. I don\u2019t agree with that. It\u2019s not my thing.<\/p>\n

Wells:<\/strong> Well, it\u2019s statistically irrefutable.<\/p>\n

Russell:<\/strong>\u00a0If you think gun control is going to change the terrorists\u2019 point of view, I think you\u2019re, like, out of your mind. I think anybody [who says that] is. I think it\u2019s absolutely insane. The problem, the problem that we\u2019re having right now to turn it around\u2026you may think you\u2019ve got me worried about you\u2019re gonna do? Dude, you\u2019re about to find out what I\u2019m gonna do, and that\u2019s gonna worry you a lot more. And that\u2018s what we need. That will change the concept of gun culture, as you call it, to something [like] reality. Which is, if I\u2019m a hockey team and I\u2019ve got some guy bearing down on me as a goal tender, I\u2019m not concerned about what he\u2019s gonna do \u2014 I\u2019m gonna make him concerned about what I\u2019m gonna do\u2026<\/p>\n

Wells:<\/strong> I get that.<\/p>\n

Russell:<\/strong> To stop him. That\u2018s when things change. So what has that got to do with movies? Nothing! Movies are movies. They\u2019re like a painting, like a song, like a book\u2026he\u2019s doing his Quentin Tarantino world, which I think belongs on film. I don\u2019t think it has anything to do with anything outside of film. The music, the manipulation of the screenplay. So I can\u2019t connect the dots. It really is hard for me to connect the dots.<\/p>\n

Wells:<\/strong> Obama\u2019s point was that the guys on the no-fly list, [there] for good reason because of terrorist connections or suspicions\u2026they can get hold of a gun pretty easily.<\/p>\n

Russell:<\/strong> They can also make a bomb pretty easily. So what? They can also get knives and stab you. Whaddaya gonna do about that? They can also get cars and run you over. Whaddaya gonna do about that?<\/p>\n

Wells:<\/strong> They didn\u2019t kill the people in San Bernardino with cars.<\/p>\n

Russell:<\/strong> But they\u2019ve killed others that way, haven\u2019t they? Yeah, yeah. Whaddaya gonna do? Outlaw everything? That isn\u2019t the answer.<\/p>\n

Wells:<\/strong> Just put some controls\u2026<\/p>\n

Russell:<\/strong> Put some controls? What, so the people, so the people who want to defend themselves can\u2019t?<\/p>\n

Wells:<\/strong> No, not so you can\u2019t, just so the idiots can\u2019t get hold of them [so easily], that\u2019s all.<\/p>\n

Russell:<\/strong> You really believe they\u2019re not going to? Are you serious about that? What good will that\u2026? Oh my God. You and I just disagree.<\/p>\n

Wells:<\/strong> Okay.<\/p>\n

Russell:<\/strong> You and I just disagree. I understand that you think you can control the behavior of people that are dead set on taking your way of life away from you. You think you can control that? And there\u2019s only one thing you can do with that. And that\u2019s [to say] \u2018No, dude, that\u2019s not gonna happen.
