It makes sense. Why should we let good stuff go to waste? And on the whole, we don\u2019t have a problem with it \u2014 until it comes to guns.<\/p>\n<p>For whatever reason, some people take issue with selling confiscated firearms to law-abiding gun dealers. Case in point: Atlanta, Georgia. Officials there are breaking state law by refusing to auction off their cache of recovered guns because they believe the results would be \u201ccatastrophic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have an obligation to re-sell that, re-bid that, and get that to gun purchasers so they can re-sell those [Firearms],\u201d Atlanta Police Chief George Turner <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbs46.com\/video?clipId=11976437&amp;autostart=true\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"atlanta-officials-break-state-law-refuse-to-sell-confiscated-firearms-back-to-public\" title=\"Atlanta Officials Break State Law, Refuse to Sell Confiscated Firearms Back to Public\">told CBS46<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, despite that a state law passed in 2012 requires police to hold gun auctions every six months, \u201cThe city of Atlanta has not done that,\u201d added Turner, because the results would be \u201ccatastrophic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So, to reiterate, Atlanta officials are knowingly violating state law because they believe that selling off their stockpile of confiscated firearms to responsible and scrupulous gun dealers would somehow come back to haunt them, which obviously doesn\u2019t make any sense because those federal firearms licensees have a legal obligation to perform background checks on any potential buyer. Plus, the FFLs already have stores filled with guns for sale! What\u2019s the big deal if they add some more product to their inventory?<\/p>\n<p>Yet, Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed is deeply conflicted about the guns.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s very difficult for me to lead on this, because even in the state of Georgia, when we take illegal guns off the street, under Georgia state law right now, we actually have to return them or make them available to the public in some form,\u201d Reed told CBS 46.<\/p>\n<p>Hmmm. Way I see it is that both Reed and Turner are free to break the law. They can even call it \u201ccivil disobedience,\u201d if they\u2019d like. But if there are going to do the crime, they better also be prepared to do the time!<\/p>\n<p>Seriously! State officials should prosecute Reed and Turner for breaking the law.
