Not surprisingly, less than 1.5 percent of them were from a gun store.<\/p>\n<p>While the sample size is small and specific to one area, it represents the modus operandi of criminals worldwide. According to the study, the majority of the criminals got their guns from a person they knew, or from a friend of a friend.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, universal background checks wouldn\u2019t have stopped them from acquiring their firearms or committing a crime. In fact, no law would have done that, because criminals by definition do not obey the law.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a breakdown of exactly where the criminals got their firearms:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_42210\" style=\"width: 737px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/gunsources.png\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"violent-criminals-dont-get-their-guns-from-gun-stores-chicago-inmates-confess\" title=\"Violent Criminals Don\u2019t Get Their Guns From Gun Stores, Chicago Inmates Confess\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-42210\" title=\"Violent Criminals Don\u2019t Get Their Guns From Gun Stores, Chicago Inmates Confess\" class=\"size-full wp-image-42210\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/gunsources.png\" alt=\"(Photo: Cook County Jail Survey)\" width=\"727\" height=\"524\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/gunsources.png 727w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/gunsources-150x108.png 150w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/gunsources-400x288.png 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 727px) 100vw, 727px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-42210\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">(<em>Photo: Cook County Jail Survey<\/em>)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The participants in the study were quite candid and revealed some of the internal workings of how they illegally acquire firearms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll they need is one person who got a gun card in the \u2018hood\u2019 and everybody got one,\u201d said one inmate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSix out of 10 times, people go out of state and bring them back,\u201d said another inmate.<\/p>\n<p>According to one of the participants, those selected by the gang leaders to bring guns in from out of state use the \u201ctrain and bring them back, can be up to five or six guns depending on how much risk they want to take.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In short, the study shows that background checks just don\u2019t affect those who choose not to obey the law.<\/p>\n<p>Does something need to be done about the continued mass shootings throughout our country? Yes. Do we need to disarm our law-abiding citizens by imposing stricter gun laws that only they will obey?
