Presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump addressed the on-air shooting of two journalists Wednesday morning, both iterating their respective positions on laws that would restrict the Second Amendment. <\/p>\n
\u201cThis isn\u2019t a gun problem, this is a mental problem,\u201d said Trump, the GOP frontrunner in an interview with CNN on Thursday. \u201cIt\u2019s not a question of the laws, it\u2019s really the people.\u201d<\/p>\n
Trump said that the gunman, who died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound Wednesday evening, should have been examined for his erratic behaviors. <\/p>\n
\u201cIn the old days they had mental institutions for people like this because he was really, definitely borderline and definitely would have been and should have been institutionalized,\u201d said Trump. \u201cAt some point somebody should have seen that, I mean the people close to him should have seen it.\u201d<\/p>\n
Asked about whether gun control was the answer to prevent future attacks, Trump touted his belief that when guns are outlawed only outlaws will have guns. <\/p>\n
\u201cYou need protection,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton called for tougher gun laws. <\/p>\n
\u201cWe have got to do something about gun violence in America \u2014 and I will take it on,\u201d Clinton said Wednesday while on the campaign trail in Iowa. <\/p>\n
\u201cIt is a very political, difficult issue in America,\u201d she said. \u201cBut I believe we are smart enough, we are compassionate enough to figure out how to balance the legitimate Second Amendment rights with preventive measures and control measures so that whatever motivated this murderer, who eventually took his own life \u2014 we will not see more deaths, needless, senseless deaths.\u201d<\/p>\n
Clinton vowed not to \u201clet another terrible incident go by without trying to do something more to prevent this incredible killing that is stalking our country and we\u2019ve had so many terrible instances of it in the last two years.”<\/p>\n
\u201cIt happens every day and there is so much evidence that if guns were not so readily available, if we had universal background checks, if we could put some timeout between the person who is upset because he got fired or the domestic abuse or whatever other motivation may be working on someone who does this \u2014 that maybe we could prevent this kind of carnage,\u201d said Clinton. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
