Law-abiding citizens will now have 60 days to either sell off (to a licensed gun dealer), turn over to police or render permanently inoperable any legally grandfathered magazines capable of holding 10 or more rounds.<\/p>\n<p>Basically, the government is telling responsible citizens to destroy their lawfully-owned private property because the government believes that these magazines in the hands of, again, law-abiding residents are a threat to public safety.<\/p>\n<p>Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, who signed the statute last week, told <a href=\"https:\/\/mynewsla.com\/government\/2015\/08\/07\/garcetti-to-usa-try-l-a-s-common-sense-ban-on-big-ammo-clips\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"common-sense-confiscation-in-los-angeles-as-magazine-ban-passes\" title=\"Common Sense = Confiscation in Los Angeles, as Magazine Ban Passes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">USA Today <\/a>that the magazine ban is a \u201ccommon sense\u201d measure that should be imposed \u201cnationwide.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At the signing ceremony, Garcetti added that the bill will help save lives.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am committed to reducing the gun violence in our city,\u201d Garcetti said. \u201cThis ban is part of that larger effort. It will help keep our streets safer and help prevent the magnitude of mass shootings. We are sending a clear message \u2013 we will not wait for Washington to act, we are ready to act now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Not surprisingly, in a statement the nation\u2019s gun lobby panned the measure, arguing that it will do nothing but restrict the rights of responsible gun owners.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis ordinance will not prevent violent crime or mass shootings, but it does limit the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding gun owners who choose these magazines to defend themselves and their families,\u201d said the National Rifle Association in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs most gun owners already know, magazines holding more than ten rounds are standard equipment for many popular pistols and rifles, especially those that are selected for defensive purposes. These standard capacity magazines are possessed by millions of law-abiding Americans for a variety of lawful purposes, including self-defense,\u201d the statement continued.<\/p>\n<p>Gun-rights advocates will certainly call into question the notion that the ban is Constitutional, let alone common sense, but the attorney for the city who penned the measure said he is confident it will fell any legal challenges.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have considered the possibility that the second revised draft ordinance might be challenged on the grounds that it is preempted by State law or violates the Second Amendment of the United States Constitution,\u201d Feuer told the LA City Council. \u201cWe believe the second draft ordinance is legally defensible on both grounds.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There are several exemptions for the new law: law enforcement, Hollywood prop masters, gunsmiths, museums and\u00a0anyone with a grandfathered magazine to a weapon for which there is no 10-round magazine produced.<\/p>\n<p>For <a href=\"\/blog\/meditations-moderate-gun-owner\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"common-sense-confiscation-in-los-angeles-as-magazine-ban-passes\" title=\"Common Sense = Confiscation in Los Angeles, as Magazine Ban Passes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">moderate gun owners<\/a>, if there was any doubt about what gun-control advocates mean when they talk about \u201ccommon sense\u201d measures this latest magazine ban should hopefully remind them that common sense is just another way of saying confiscation. That\u2019s the goal. Don\u2019t be fooled by agreeable rhetoric. The truth is that they want your guns, magazines, ammo. The main targets now are black rifles and magazines over 10 rounds. Next will come handguns and semiautomatics.
