For left-leaning gun owners presidential candidate Bernie Sanders is an attractive candidate in that he is not as rabidly anti-gun as Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton. <\/p>\n
Sanders, a U.S. Sen. from Vermont, believes \u201ccommon ground\u201d gun laws are what the country needs to keep guns out of the hands of bad guys. <\/p>\n
“Coming from a rural state, I think I can communicate with folks coming from urban states, where guns mean different things than they do in Vermont, where [they are] used for hunting,” Sanders explained.<\/p>\n
“Nobody should have a gun who has a criminal background, was involved in domestic abuse situations. People should not have guns who are going to hurt other people, who are unstable,” he added. “We need to make sure that certain types of guns used to kill people, exclusively, not for hunting, should not be sold in the United States of America.”<\/p>\n
What Sanders means by \u201cguns used to kill people, exclusively,\u201d is not quite clear. Realistically speaking, there is no firearm that is \u201cexclusively\u201d used to kill. All guns are tools and have a wide range of applications, from self-defense, to hunting, shooting sports and competition, recreational plinking, etc. Certain guns excel at one task over another but there isn\u2019t a firearm that is \u201cexclusively used to kill people.\u201d <\/p>\n
So, what is Bernie saying? That we should ban all handguns? If so, he\u2019d be depriving millions of Americans their fundamental right to self-defense? Maybe he is saying we should ban all modern sporting rifles? However, those are used for hunting, plinking and competition \u2014 plus, they are rarely used in the commission of a crime.<\/p>\n
Sen. Sanders seems to want to have it both ways. He wants to tout his support for the Second Amendment while at the same time telling law-abiding citizens what guns they shouldn’t be allowed to possess. Needless to say, that dog won’t hunt. I can’t see too many gun owners, whether they’re right wing or left wing, voting for Sanders in 2016. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
