It\u2019s inevitable.<\/p>\n
It doesn\u2019t matter whether all the facts are known about the shooting or whether the dust has settled and we have a clear picture of what exactly transpired. Nope. If a gun goes off and innocent lives are taken, gun-control advocates are going to say: we need to restrict the Second Amendment.<\/p>\n
Yes, it\u2019s a reactionary response. And in the vast majority of cases, it\u2019s a deeply misguided response as the laws the activists are calling for would not have prevented the individual from perpetrating the attack. In effect, they\u2019re calling for solutions that would do nothing to fix the problem. <\/p>\n
To situate this phenomenon in a different context, it would be like calling for a ban on cars in the wake of automobile accident. Instead of targeting the drunk driver, the person responsible for the wreck, the outrage and ire would be direct at the automobile. Doesn\u2019t make much sense, does it? <\/p>\n
With respect to the shooting in Chattanooga, Tennessee, there are still a lot of unknowns. That said, what we do know is that 24-year-old Mohammad Youssuf Abdulazeez, a naturalized citizen from Kuwait, shot seven people, killing four of them on Thursday. <\/p>\n
Reportedly, Abdulazeez was targeting soldiers at two military centers. Of those killed, all four were Marines. Of those injured, one was a Marine recruiter, one a police officer and one a Navy sailor. <\/p>\n
Abdulazeez was also killed in a shootout with police. Authorities are now examining his background to determine if Abdulazeez had any connections to terrorist groups. So far, nothing conclusive has been reported. <\/p>\n
So, while most sensible people will wait till all the facts are known before the render judgement one way or another about legislation regulating firearm ownership, gun control activists have already started beating the drum for tougher gun laws. <\/p>\n
\u201cOur thoughts and prayers are with the families and colleagues of those injured in the shooting today,\u201d said Linda McFadyen-Ketchum, volunteer chapter leader of the Tennessee chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. <\/p>\n
\u201cWhile we don\u2019t know all the details yet, it is once again clear the damage that can be done when a dangerous person gets hold of a gun. Tennesseans must stand up and demand more from elected leaders to prevent the gun violence that kills 88 Americans and injures hundreds more every single day.\u201d<\/p>\n
Likewise, former Chattanooga Mayor Ron Littlefield, a member of the Tennessee Coalition of Mayors Against Illegal Guns, echoed the need to target the Second Amendment. <\/p>\n
\u201cThis horrific shooting should be a call to action to strengthen our gun laws,\u201d said Littlefield. \u201cThere are common sense measures we can take that would prevent gun violence while respecting the Second Amendment.\u201d <\/p>\n
What bothers me most about this misdirection is that it doesn\u2019t change regardless of what the circumstances are. Even when these tragedies occur in places with draconian gun laws, the refrain is the same: \u201cThere are common sense measures we can take that would prevent gun violence while respecting the Second Amendment.\u201d<\/p>\n
In other words, when does it stop? Where do gun-control activists draw the line on the Second Amendment? When do they say, \u201cOkay, the laws here are appropriately tough, now it\u2019s time to examine other solutions?\u201d <\/p>\n
Unfortunately, I don\u2019t think it ever stops. I don\u2019t think they\u2019ll ever be satisfied so long as the Second Amendment remains intact. Which is sad because were they to put retire the gun-control agenda once and for all (think of all the time, money and energy it consumes) and instead pursue real solutions to violence (efforts to target gang and drug-related activity) think of all the lives they may actually save. It\u2019s a pity, really. But here we are once again. Listening to the same old, same old from the gun-control movement.
