Richard Blumenthal. \u00a0(<em>Photo: LATimes)<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p>Democratic senators are calling on President Obama to close a gun control \u201cloophole\u201d that allowed Charleston shooter Dylann Roof to legally purchase a handgun, even though had a felony drug charge.<\/p>\n<p>Connecticut Senators Chris Murphy and Richard Blumenthal have pointed out the \u201cdefault to proceed\u201d rule under the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act, which allows licensed firearms dealers to sell a firearm if the FBI doesn\u2019t return the buyer\u2019s criminal background check within three business days.<\/p>\n<p>Murphy and Blumenthal\u2019s call to action is in direct response to the Charleston shooting, where Roof legally obtained a handgun when he otherwise shouldn\u2019t have.<\/p>\n<p>\u201dWe shouldn\u2019t give known criminals the benefit of the doubt when it comes to guns,\u201d said Blumenthal and Murphy in a joint statement. \u201cIf law enforcement needs more than three days to ensure they\u2019re not giving weapons to dangerous people, Washington must allow them the time to do their jobs.
