A 22-year-old man accidentally killed himself after stuffing a firework down a mortar tube, setting it on top of his head and lightning it. Now, his mother is calling for tighter fireworks laws in Maine. <\/p>\n
Devon Staples was at a party in Calais when, after consuming an undisclosed amount of alcohol, he put the mortar tube on top of his head. Friends tried to dissuade him from lighting it, but ultimately the explosives went off. <\/p>\n
\u201cThere was no rushing him to the hospital, said Cody Staples, Devon\u2019s older brother. \u201cThere was no Devon left when I got there.\u201d<\/p>\n
Authorities say Devon\u2019s death is the first fireworks-related death since they became legal in the state three years ago, but his mother insisted that proper training and licensing should come along with the right to set off fireworks.<\/p>\n
