Cicilline (D-RI) <a href=\"https:\/\/cicilline.house.gov\/press-release\/cicilline-announces-new-gun-violence-prevention-effort\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"more-gun-control-bills-courtesy-of-rep-cicilline\" title=\"More Gun Control Bills, Courtesy of Rep. Cicilline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">introduced three bills<\/a> this week that supposedly seek to keep guns out of the hands of dangerous individuals.<\/p>\n<p>A founding member of Bloomberg\u2019s Mayors Against Illegal Guns, Rep. Cicilline cited the recent church shooting in Charleston, South Carolina, as his impetus behind this latest push to strengthen gun laws.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have to do more as a country to address our problem with gun violence &#8211; on average, 30 Americans are killed each day with a gun. This just doesn\u2019t happen in other developed countries,\u201d said Cicilline, referencing president Obama\u2019s flawed comparison between European gun laws and American gun laws.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have introduced three bills that will help to keep guns away from children, criminals, and those with serious mental illness, when possessing a gun is a danger to the individual or others,\u201d he added. \u201cWhile I understand that some in Congress would prefer not to have this debate right now, it is critical that we find the political will to finally address these urgent concerns.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His three bills include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The End Purchase of Firearms by Dangerous Individuals Act (H.R. 2917) would require that all 50 states provide information to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System on individuals who are committed to a mental institution or who express a threat of violence to a mental health professional. The proposal is co-sponsored by Congressman Raul Grijalva (D-NM) and Congressman Earl Blumenauer (D-OR).<\/li>\n<li>The Fire Sale Loophole Closing Act (H.R. 2916) would end the practice by which gun dealers who lose their license can convert their entire inventory to a \u201cpersonal inventory\u201d in order to liquidate it without conducting background checks on their customers. The bill is co-sponsored by 34 of Cicilline\u2019s colleagues in the U.S. House of Representatives.<\/li>\n<li>H. Con. Res. 59, a concurrent resolution that supports designating June 21 each year as National ASK (Asking Saves Kids) Day. National ASK Day encourages parents to ask other parents if their child will be playing in a house with an unsecured gun. The goals of the National ASK Day initiative have been endorsed by Head Start, the American Public Health Association, and the American Academy of Pediatrics.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In addition to introducing these three bills, Cicilline is a co-sponsor of \u201cthe Gun Show Loophole Closing Act to require criminal background checks on firearms transactions conducted at gun shows; the Protecting Domestic Violence and Stalking Victims Act to prohibit current and former abusive dating partners from owning a firearms; and the Pause for Safety Act to allow families to seek a gun violence prevention order to stop someone close to them from purchasing a firearm if they are a threat to themselves or others.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>You know, while some of these sound good in theory there is no doubt that if they were enacted they would have negative ramifications for law-abiding gun owners. The gun-grabbers are clever, they know if they start with an inch here and an inch there pretty soon they\u2019ll have miles of ground covered and the Second Amendment will be a privilege instead of a right \u2014 just like in Europe, which is their template for the future of gun ownership in the U.S.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>U.S. Congressman David N.
