Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) reintroduced the<a href=\"https:\/\/delauro.house.gov\/images\/pdf\/SAFERStreetsAct114th.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"lawmaker-wants-government-to-buy-back-assault-weapons-via-tax-incentives\" title=\"Lawmaker Wants Government to Buy Back \u2018Assault Weapons\u2019 via Tax Incentives\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> SAFER (Support Assault Firearm Elimination and Education for our) Streets <\/a>Act Monday, a bill that would give gun owners tax credits if they turned over their so-called \u201cassault weapons\u201d to law enforcement.<\/p>\n<p>DeLauro first introduced the bill following the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust days after the Newtown tragedy, President Obama asked \u2018Are we doing enough to protect our children?\u2019 And he admitted the answer is no. That must change. The SAFER Streets Act is a common-sense, constructive step to help ensure such a tragedy will never happen again,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/delauro.house.gov\/index.php?option=com_content&amp;view=article&amp;id=1876:delauro-marks-national-public-health-week-by-announcing-reintroduction-of-safer-streets-act&amp;catid=2&amp;Itemid=21\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"lawmaker-wants-government-to-buy-back-assault-weapons-via-tax-incentives\" title=\"Lawmaker Wants Government to Buy Back \u2018Assault Weapons\u2019 via Tax Incentives\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> DeLauro.<\/p>\n<p>The SAFER Streets Act would give a citizen a refundable tax credit of $2,000 ($1,000 for two consecutive years) when that individual hands in their black rifle to authorities. The ostensible goal is to \u201cget more assault weapons off the streets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAssault weapons are not about hunting, or even self-defense. There is no reason on Earth, other than to kill as many people as possible in as short a time as possible, that anyone needs a gun designed for a battlefield,\u201d said DeLauro.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese weapons were used in Newtown, Aurora and countless other mass shootings across America,\u201d she continued. \u201cAnd they have been disproportionately used to kill law enforcement officers in the line of duty. They have no place on the streets or in our homes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Given the fact that the GOP has a majority in both the House and Senate, in all likelihood, this bill is dead upon arrival.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rep.
