Gun-control activist Sarah Kemp Brady died on Friday at a retirement community in Alexandria, Virginia. She was battling pneumonia, family members told The Associated Press.<\/a> She was 73.<\/p>\n

Brady became an advocate for tougher gun laws after her husband James Brady, the former White House Press Secretary for Ronald Reagan, was shot during an assassination attempt on the president in 1981.<\/p>\n

James Brady was partially paralyzed as a result of the shooting. He\u00a0died last year<\/a> on Aug. 4, also at the age of 73 following a “series of health issues.\u201d<\/p>\n

“Sarah courageously stepped up after Jim was shot to prevent others from enduring what our family has gone through, and her work has saved countless lives,” the Brady family said in a statement.<\/p>\n

“Sarah was a voice of strength, love and encouragement, and she inspired others, showing that one person could make a difference and change the world which she did,” it continued.<\/p>\n

The gun-control organization that honors the “Brady” name spoke of her passing.<\/p>\n

Calling Sarah Brady “its guiding light,”\u00a0Dan Gross, president of Brady Campaign, said, “There are countless people walking around today who would not be were it not for Sarah Brady’s remarkable resilience, compassion.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
