During a town hall event in Columbia, South Carolina, on Friday, president Barack Obama took several shots at the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding gun owners. <\/p>\n
\u201cAs long as you can go in some neighborhoods and it is easier for you to buy a firearm than it is for you to buy a book, there are neighborhoods where it is easier for you to buy a handgun and clips than it is for you to buy a fresh vegetable, as long as that\u2019s the case, we\u2019re going to continue to see unnecessary violence,\u201d said the president during the Q&A at Benedict College.<\/p>\n
Obama lamented the lack of success his administration and Congress have had with respect to foisting tougher gun-control laws on the American people, specifically following the 2012 mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. <\/p>\n
\u201cI thought after what happened at Sandy Hook would make us think about it,\u201d Obama said. \u201cYou would have thought that\u2019s got to be enough of a motivator. But we couldn\u2019t get it done.\u201d<\/p>\n
The president went to on to say that without tougher state and federal gun laws, \u201cit is difficult to reduce the availability of guns.\u201d Though, he claimed he has tried to get as much done \u201cadministratively\u201d as he could. <\/p>\n
Obama complained that \u201cOur homicide rates are so much higher than other industrialized countries,\u201d and suggested it was due to the high rate of gun ownership in the U.S. <\/p>\n
\u201cIn some places it goes the opposite direction. People say we should have firearms in kindergarten and have machine guns in bars. You think I\u2019m exaggerating,\u201d Obama said. \u201cYou look at these laws that come up. Despite those frustrations, I would say it is still within our control to reduce the incidence of handguns violence by making sure your young people understand that that is not a sign of strength.\u201d<\/p>\n
Yet, after griping about America\u2019s gun culture and respect for the right to keep and bear arms, Obama said that we need to protect it. \u201cThat\u2019s important. That\u2019s part of who we are.\u201d<\/p>\n
Apparently, by \u201cprotecting\u201d the Second Amendment he means we need to restrict it to the point where no one can freely exercise it. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
