{"id":34145,"date":"2015-03-04T10:48:12","date_gmt":"2015-03-04T15:48:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/blog\/?p=34145"},"modified":"2015-03-04T10:48:12","modified_gmt":"2023-08-18T01:40:49","slug":"federal-lawmakers-reintroduce-universal-background-check-bill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/federal-lawmakers-reintroduce-universal-background-check-bill\/","title":{"rendered":"Federal Lawmakers to Reintroduce Universal Background Check Bill"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/regulation\/legislation\/234457-lawmakers-rally-around-gun-control-legislation\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"federal-lawmakers-reintroduce-universal-background-check-bill\" title=\"Federal Lawmakers to Reintroduce Universal Background Check Bill\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Hill.com is reporting<\/a> that federal lawmakers are once again introducing legislation that would require background checks on all firearm sales, including private transfers made over the Internet or at gun shows.<\/p>\n<p>Known as the \u201cPublic Safety and Second Amendment Rights Protection Act,\u201d it would basically mandate universal background checks in all 50 states.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis bill is anti-criminal, and will help keep spouses, kids and communities safe by preventing dangerous people from getting guns,\u201d sponsor of the bill Rep. Mike Thompson told The Hill.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s also pro-Second Amendment,\u201d added Thompson, a Democrat from California. \u201cI\u2019m a hunter and a gun owner. I support the Second Amendment. If this bill undermined the rights of gun owners, my name wouldn\u2019t be on it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The bill was also supported by other notable pro-gun control sympathizers: Reps. Peter King (R-NY), Elizabeth Esty (D-CT), Kathleen Rice (D-NY) and Bob Dold (R-IL).<\/p>\n<p>Not surprisingly, the bill was endorsed by the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is no doubt expanded background checks save lives,&#8221; said Dan Gross, president of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is time for Congress to finish the job and expand Brady background checks to the thousands of gun sales that happen every day online and at gun shows.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A version of the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.govtrack.us\/congress\/bills\/113\/hr1565\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"federal-lawmakers-reintroduce-universal-background-check-bill\" title=\"Federal Lawmakers to Reintroduce Universal Background Check Bill\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Public Safety and Second Amendment Rights Protection Act<\/a>\u201d was introduced in 2013. However, it died in Congress. How this latest version differs from its previous incarnation is not quite clear. It may in fact be the same exact bill.
