NRA Exec. Vice President Wayne LaPierre has the uncanny ability to turn things up to eleven. What I mean by turning things up to eleven (for those who have never watched Spinal Tap)<\/a>, is that LaPierre can really rock a speech when he wants to. He can perform like few other lobbyists can.<\/p>\n

What’s ironic though is that LaPierre is not a gifted orator, skilled rhetorician or naturally talented performer. He’s far from it. His voice is shrill. His delivery is anything but smooth. He frequently makes mistakes, (mispronouncing “Afghanistan” in this latest address). His body language is incredibly stilted, and even downright awkward. He is strangely intense. On some level, I think if LaPierre was a musician, he’d be Neil Young.<\/p>\n

So, what makes him so captivating to an audience? What gives him that extra gear?<\/p>\n

Well, it’s two things in my estimation (a) the content of his speeches, which I’ll get to in a moment and (b) the fact that unlike many of the talking heads he is not a silver-tongued huckster. \u00a0See, LaPierre is an activist in lobbyist’s clothing. That’s right. LaPierre is genuine. He deeply cares about his cause. He cares about you. And he cares about this country. I don’t think there’s too many people in Washington we can say that about nowadays, which brings me to his speech; which I would argue is a testament to his character and a revelation of his intent as the leader of the nation’s preeminent lobbying organization.<\/p>\n

After carefully reading over his CPAC address, here were the five quotes that stuck out to me:<\/p>\n

On Terrorism:<\/strong><\/p>\n

“Have you heard about their latest: ‘Jobs for jihadists’? I\u2019m for ‘bullets for jihadi\u00a0<\/em>butchers’!”<\/em><\/p>\n

On a Woman's Right to Self-Defense<\/a>:<\/strong><\/p>\n

“You don\u2019t empower women by leaving them defenseless. And you don\u2019t strengthen<\/em>
\n a nation by taking away its freedoms.”<\/em><\/p>\n

On Media Dishonesty:<\/strong><\/p>\n

“Folks, Brian Williams isn\u2019t the exception. He\u2019s exactly what they\u2019ve taught us to expect\u00a0from them all. It\u2019s not journalism any more \u2014 it\u2019s entertainment, it\u2019s celebrity, it\u2019s\u00a0agendas and it\u2019s money. All too often, a lie is now an acceptable way of communicating.\u00a0To the media, a lie has as much value as the truth.”<\/em><\/p>\n

On the NRA’s Power to Preserve Liberty:<\/strong><\/p>\n

“The safest place for American freedom is the National Rifle Association. The safest place for American freedom is in the hearts of our members.”<\/em><\/p>\n

On the NRA’s Legislative Agenda:<\/strong><\/p>\n

“Good guys shouldn\u2019t be forced to break the law to exercise their God-given,\u00a0constitutional right to protect themselves and their families. And it\u2019s time for Congress\u00a0to act. Pass National Right-to-Carry Reciprocity for the entire United States.\u00a0Pass it today!”<\/em><\/p>\n

From my vantage point, it’s hard for me to find fault with anything he said. Most of it pretty much rings true for me. Yet, I’m also aware that not everyone likes LaPierre’s commentary and respects his vision for America.<\/p>\n

Ladd Everitt, communications director for the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence, was not a fan.<\/p>\n

“It was the typical ridiculous fearmongering that no rational person would take seriously, said Everitt. Then quoting LaPierre, “‘Hackers, identity thieves and genuine monsters,’ Terrorists waiting at your local mall ready to behead you on camera. The call to protect your women, as if this was the antebellum South.”<\/p>\n

“I also thought his opening declaration, ‘We as Americans are wary, we\u2019re despairing, we\u2019re sad,’ was pathetic,” continued Everitt. “He certainly isn’t describing any Americans I know. Whatever that garbage is, it’s not patriotism, and it demonstrates no faith whatsoever in our great nation.”<\/p>\n

Well, there you have it. Two different opinions on LaPierre’s speech from folks on two different sides of the gun debate. What did you think of LaPierre’s speech?<\/p>\n

Here is a transcript of the speech:<\/strong><\/p>\n

It\u2019s great to be here at CPAC again. Are you having a great conference? Are you ready\u00a0to make a difference for your country and your freedom? Let me hear you!<\/em><\/p>\n

In November\u2019s elections, we made history. But I know it\u2019s the future that\u2019s on our minds.\u00a0As Americans, we\u2019re weary. We\u2019re despairing. And we\u2019re sad. Because so much we care\u00a0about is slipping away.<\/em><\/p>\n

You feel it. The threats are all around us. Russia\u2019s advancing. The Islamic State is\u00a0consolidating power. With beheadings, rapes, murders and atrocities, they\u2019re carving a\u00a0bloody trail that leads to our doorstep. They\u2019re already here!<\/em><\/p>\n

How much longer before the horrors we\u2019ve witnessed in Paris or Copenhagen\u00a0come to the supposedly \u201cgun-free zone\u201d of the Mall of America? Or for that matter,\u00a0the mall in your town? It\u2019s not \u201cif\u201d \u2014 it\u2019s just \u201cwhen.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

With fires breaking out around the world, is war on the horizon? As Americans,\u00a0we feel vulnerable in other ways, too.<\/em><\/p>\n

Our economy is staggering. Our debt is astronomical. Politicians insist it\u2019s all OK. But\u00a0I\u2019ve been on the road for the past two months, all over America, and everyone I talk to\u00a0knows it\u2019s not OK. They see their freedoms taken away.<\/em><\/p>\n

You can\u2019t say this. You can\u2019t do that. You can\u2019t ask why. If you do, you\u2019ll be\u00a0shouted down, shamed, accused, audited, investigated, your motives condemned and\u00a0told to \u201cshut up.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Our right to privacy is unlocked, analyzed, mined for data, catalogued, cross-referenced\u00a0and filed away for future use faster than you can say \u201cBig Brother.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Freedom of speech is being smothered under everything from \u201cpolitical correctness\u201d to\u00a0blackouts on political speech during election campaigns.<\/em><\/p>\n

Freedom of religion faces cultural war \u2014 especially if you\u2019re not of the right religion.\u00a0I\u2019m not just talking about the Christians beheaded by Islamic jihadists this month.\u00a0I\u2019m not talking about Mosul, Iraq, where they beheaded children for simply being\u00a0Christian. I\u2019m not talking about a kosher deli in Paris where people were gunned down\u00a0for simply being Jewish.<\/em><\/p>\n

I\u2019m talking about here at home, where if terrorists release a video of a mass murder\u00a0of Christians called \u201cA Message Signed With Blood to the Nation of the Cross,\u201d\u00a0the leader of the free world refuses to even acknowledge their movement, their mission\u00a0or their motive.<\/em><\/p>\n

If so-called \u201cgun-free zones\u201d supposedly save lives, why doesn\u2019t Obama simply declare\u00a0Iraq, Syria and Afghanistan to be one big, happy \u201cgun-free zone\u201d?<\/em><\/p>\n

Have you heard about their latest: \u201cJobs for jihadists\u201d? I\u2019m for \u201cbullets for jihadi\u00a0butchers\u201d!<\/em><\/p>\n

They can call us \u201cbitter clingers\u201d to guns and religion all they want, but they will never\u00a0shake our faith in who we are and what we believe.<\/em><\/p>\n

Our society is changing. It\u2019s common now to not know your neighbors.<\/em><\/p>\n

Not long ago, kids were embarrassed if Mom stood at the bus stop. Now it\u2019s normal.\u00a0Even at home, you\u2019ve got to watch out for your kids. Hackers, identity thieves and\u00a0genuine monsters are just a click away.<\/em><\/p>\n

You tell me: Is there any doubt that if someone or some group wants to, they can read\u00a0your email, listen on your phone or track your car?<\/em><\/p>\n

Really? Authorities tracking license plates of law-abiding citizens?<\/em><\/p>\n

Our health histories and our entire lives are available online, just waiting for someone to\u00a0cash in on it all.<\/em><\/p>\n

And there\u2019s a sense it\u2019s all become an inside game. The rich get richer. The poor get\u00a0poorer. The powerful take more power. Wall Street rocks and rolls.<\/em><\/p>\n

And even when they\u2019re caught lying, cheating, stealing or ruining our entire economy\u00a0with Ponzi schemes so big that even Bernie Madoff wouldn\u2019t have the spine to try it,\u00a0nobody goes to jail. Everybody gets a pass. Nothing changes.<\/em><\/p>\n

And the business of \u201cpolitics as usual\u201d goes on. They give speeches they know aren\u2019t\u00a0true. They sign bills they didn\u2019t read. When the law blows up in their faces, they give\u00a0themselves another pass.<\/em><\/p>\n

And the media\u2019s in on the con \u2026 and on the gravy train. Today, most Americans say\u00a0they don\u2019t trust the media. My question is, where\u2019d they find ANYBODY who believes\u00a0the media any more?<\/em><\/p>\n

Folks, Brian Williams isn\u2019t the exception. He\u2019s exactly what they\u2019ve taught us to expect\u00a0from them all. It\u2019s not journalism any more \u2014 it\u2019s entertainment, it\u2019s celebrity, it\u2019s\u00a0agendas and it\u2019s money. All too often, a lie is now an acceptable way of communicating.\u00a0To the media, a lie has as much value as the truth.<\/em><\/p>\n

We can\u2019t trust the government to tell us the truth. They\u2019ve already shown us that.\u00a0The government evidently doesn\u2019t trust us. Their surveillance and oppression through a\u00a0weaponized IRS just proves it.<\/em><\/p>\n

People don\u2019t look to this town any more for answers. Our leaders lie to us and the media\u00a0swear to it, as if their freedoms weren\u2019t under attack as well.<\/em><\/p>\n

But I\u2019ve got news for the media: Your First Amendment right is not a license to kill the\u00a0Second Amendment with lies. Your freedom is just as endangered, and your lies\u00a0endanger us all.<\/em><\/p>\n

Every day the media tell us we need just one more law, just one more gun ban, just one\u00a0more restriction on the rights of law-abiding gun owners to prevent violent crime.<\/em><\/p>\n

The story they should be telling is how few of the laws already on the books are enforced\u00a0against the people who actually do us harm: armed, violent, dangerous criminals.<\/em><\/p>\n

Instead, politicians waste their time and your tax dollars pushing nanny-state social\u00a0schemes and gun laws that only disarm good people. In other words, not only do they\u00a0refuse to protect us, they also want to deny us the ability to protect ourselves.<\/em><\/p>\n

And every day of every year, innocent, good, defenseless people are beaten, bloodied,\u00a0robbed, raped and murdered as a direct result.<\/em><\/p>\n

Folks, when a criminal attacks, politicians aren\u2019t there to protect you. Their laws can\u2019t\u00a0protect you. And the media\u2019s lies can\u2019t protect you, either. You\u2019re on your own.<\/em><\/p>\n

But you know what can protect you \u2014 when no one else can, when no one else will?\u00a0The ironclad, absolute safeguard of the Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms!<\/em><\/p>\n

You know, we live in a time when, increasingly, the most vulnerable group among us is\u00a0American women. We fear for our moms. We fear for our wives, sisters and daughters because we know how exposed they are. They can be spied upon, stalked online and set\u00a0up for attack through social media or through a kicked-down door.<\/em><\/p>\n

How about empowering women to protect themselves \u2014 by making them stronger?\u00a0The NRA\u2019s Refuse To Be A Victim\u00ae program has taught tens of thousands of women\u00a0how to protect themselves \u2013 with or without a gun \u2014 for the past 20 years.<\/em><\/p>\n

What have The New York Times or Hollywood celebrities or the anti-gun lobby\u00a0done to empower women? All they\u2019ve done is try to make women weaker \u2014\u00a0by scaring them, or shaming them, or flat-out denying them the option of owning\u00a0a gun for their own protection.<\/em><\/p>\n

You don\u2019t empower women by leaving them defenseless. And you don\u2019t strengthen\u00a0a nation by taking away its freedoms.<\/em><\/p>\n

We live in an age when our nation and her freedoms are increasingly vulnerable \u2014\u00a0from terrorists crossing our borders or embedded within our communities, to the mentally\u00a0ill who roam our streets, to the criminal class unleashed upon us by those who refuse to\u00a0protect us. The failure and false-heartedness of those in charge of our safety are going to\u00a0get more and more of us killed.<\/em><\/p>\n

The only solution is to face the truth: We individually are in charge of our own security.\u00a0We are in charge of our own family\u2019s safety. And along with law enforcement, we\u2019re in\u00a0charge of our neighborhoods, schools, towns and cities where we live.<\/em><\/p>\n

History proves we\u2019re right. Over the past 25 years, while dozens of states have restored\u00a0the right to carry a gun, violent crime has fallen to the lowest level in decades. You don\u2019t\u00a0hear that in the media, do you?<\/em><\/p>\n

But too many states refuse to recognize the Right-to-Carry permits issued by other states.<\/em><\/p>\n

And honest, good, peaceable people too often go to jail as a result. Law-abiding Right-toCarry\u00a0permit holders don\u2019t pose a threat to anybody except the bad guys.<\/em><\/p>\n

Good guys shouldn\u2019t be forced to break the law to exercise their God-given,\u00a0constitutional right to protect themselves and their families. And it\u2019s time for Congress\u00a0to act. Pass National Right-to-Carry Reciprocity for the entire United States.\u00a0Pass it today!<\/em><\/p>\n

Even if you don\u2019t own a gun or don\u2019t care about the right to do so, if you care about\u00a0freedom in any of its forms, you belong in the NRA.<\/em><\/p>\n

LaPierre is a fiery speaker, at times.<\/p><\/div>\n

Why? Well, just look at our history. Over the past decades, by every measure, the\u00a0Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms has gotten stronger than ever \u2014 even as our other freedoms have been slowly, progressively diminished. The credit for rescuing firearm freedom goes to the 5 million members of the NRA.<\/em><\/p>\n

Those 5 million NRA members share something really important in common. We share\u00a0a determination to stand up, speak out, throw the liars out of office, shield the innocent\u00a0from the lawless and defend all the freedoms that we hold dear.<\/em><\/p>\n

I challenge you: Tell me where you find people like THAT who are absolutely\u00a0determined to turn this country in a different, freer and better direction? You know\u00a0we talk hard truth. You know we stand on principle. You know we never waver.\u00a0You know we fight. And you know we win.<\/em><\/p>\n

We are Charlton Heston vowing, \u201cFrom my cold, dead hands!\u201d\u00a0I hear people say to me all the time, \u201cWayne, what the First Amendment needs is its own\u00a0National Rifle Association.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cWhat the economy needs is its own NRA.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

And, \u201cWhat our nation\u2019s military and police deserve is their own NRA.\u201d\u00a0They\u2019re all saying, \u201cWe need someone to stand up for all the things we care about and\u00a0consider most valuable in our lives.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

For the NRA, that always includes our firearms and our freedom to own them. But to\u00a0defend firearm freedom, we need more than just firearm freedom. One right depends on\u00a0another. They\u2019re all cut from the same cloth of what it means to be free people.<\/em><\/p>\n

So the NRA fights for freedom of speech and freedom of assembly and the right to\u00a0privacy, too. We fight for the entire Bill of Rights because it is all connected.<\/em><\/p>\n

Where do you think freedom\u2019s safest place is? In the news media, The New York Times\u00a0and MSNBC? In one of the political parties? 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue?<\/em><\/p>\n

The safest place for American freedom is the National Rifle Association. The safest place\u00a0for American freedom is in the hearts of our members.<\/em><\/p>\n

So take our country back from the liars, the cheats, the press and political elites\u00a0who want to take away our ability to define our own destiny. Join us!<\/em><\/p>\n
