Does president Obama love America?<\/p>\n

Interesting question. I don’t know if I have an answer. Former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani\u00a0does, however.<\/p>\n

“I do not believe, and I know this is a horrible thing to say, but I do not believe the president loves America,” Giuliani told Politico earlier this week.<\/p>\n

On Thursday, in an interview with Fox News’ Megyn Kelly, Giuliani doubled down on his comments. Kelly first asked Giuliani if he wanted to apologize to which he responded, “Not at all. I want to repeat it.”<\/p>\n

“I don’t feel this love of America,” Giuliani said. “I believe his initial approach is to criticize the United States.”<\/p>\n

The New York Times then asked Giuliani if his remarks had racial undertones.<\/p>\n

“I thought that was a joke, since (Obama) was brought up by a white mother, a white grandfather, went to white schools, ” said Giuliani. “This isn’t racism. This is socialism or possibly anti-colonialism.”<\/p>\n

Giuliani is in the midst of a major shitstorm. Folks are angry at “America’s mayor” for speaking his mind. Maybe the ire and outrage Giuliani now faces is warranted. Maybe it isn’t.<\/p>\n

On some level, I think it’s tough to prove that a man loves or doesn’t love “America,” as America is a bit of an abstract and nebulous term that has come to mean different things to different people. One can argue that Obama’s conception of America (liberal, progressive) is different than Giuliani conception of America (conservative), therefore Giuliani’s accusation is one that is based upon how Giuliani defines America — not Obama. So, it’s a relative complaint. Obama could easily fire back and say Giuliani doesn’t love America because he doesn’t embrace socialized medicine or food stamps or cap and trade or other policies and programs that represent Obama’s America.<\/p>\n

President Obama. I’d argue he doesn’t love the Second Amendment. Would you agree?<\/p><\/div>\n

That said, what isn’t relative, what isn’t abstract or nebulous, is the Second Amendment. The founders and framers were clear about the importance of the right of the people to keep and bear arms for defense against tyranny, not only from governments but from evildoers as well. That’s why the right of the people to keep and bear arms was enshrined in the Constitution along with the words, “shall not be infringed.”<\/p>\n

When it comes to the Second Amendment, it’s clear that Obama doesn’t love it. Between his comments and his actions over the past several years, one can make a strong case that Obama wants to roll back the rights of law-abiding gun owners. A man who truly cherished the Second Amendment wouldn’t seek to reinstate a ban on commonly owned and widely popular firearms and magazines. He wouldn’t seek to criminalize private transfers. He wouldn’t use the ATF as means to foist gun-control on the American people. None of these statements are open for debate.<\/p>\n

“We’ve got a long tradition of hunting and sportsmen and people who want to make sure they can protect themselves\u2026But weapons that were designed for soldiers in war theaters don’t belong on our streets. Part of it is seeing if we can get an assault weapons ban reintroduced,” said Obama during the Presidential debate, Oct. 16, 2012.<\/p>\n

Unlike America, the Second Amendment has a very clear meaning. Sure, judges and courts still debate the correct interpretation of the text as it relates to narrow concerns, e.g. does the 2A apply in public parks?, but the heart and the soul of the Amendment is overwhelmingly clear. If I were to advise Giuliani I’d suggest that if he’s going to criticize the president, he ought to pick a specific issue and build a case. \u00a0The Second Amendment is a good place to start.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
