True or not, Browning did design a great little pistol that will fit in a vest pocket.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_33309\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Colt-190524.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"shooting-history-colt-1908-vest-pocket-old-gun-review\" title=\"Shooting History: Colt 1908 Vest Pocket--Old Gun Review\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-33309\" title=\"Shooting History: Colt 1908 Vest Pocket--Old Gun Review\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-33309\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Colt-190524-400x266.jpg\" alt=\"Side-by-side the Pocket Hammerless and the Vest Pocket.  \" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Colt-190524-400x266.jpg 400w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Colt-190524-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Colt-190524.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-33309\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Side-by-side the Pocket Hammerless and the Vest Pocket.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The design was originally submitted to Colt in 1904 but they turned it down.\u00a0 He then went to FN in Europe and they jumped on it and introduced their version in 1906.\u00a0 The FN 1906 and the Colt 1908 (when they finally decided to make it) are almost exactly they same.\u00a0 Browning had an agreement with FN and Browning for the production on his designs.\u00a0 Simply put: FN made the ones for the European market and Colt them for North and South America.<\/p>\n<p>Take a look at the photo of the Vest Pocket next to the Pocket Hammerless.\u00a0 The Vest Pocket is basically a scaled down version of the bigger pistol.\u00a0 There is one big difference, the Vest Pocket is striker fired.\u00a0 It is not the first striker fired pistol, but it is an early one. Typical of the Browning designs from this era, the Vest Pocket has a grip safety.\u00a0 The first models that FN produced did not have a manual safety that is on the Colt made ones.\u00a0 Colt also added at magazine disconnect around 1917. The Colts were mainly offered in blue or nickel finishes.\u00a0 There were silver or gold plated and engraved models that were available for custom order.\u00a0 Most were shipped with hard rubber grips with checkered wood grips being available in the late 1920s.\u00a0 Ivory and pearl grips were also available for order.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_33305\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Colt-190514.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"shooting-history-colt-1908-vest-pocket-old-gun-review\" title=\"Shooting History: Colt 1908 Vest Pocket--Old Gun Review\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-33305\" title=\"Shooting History: Colt 1908 Vest Pocket--Old Gun Review\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-33305\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Colt-190514-400x266.jpg\" alt=\"Very little original finish on this one but lots of patina. \" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Colt-190514-400x266.jpg 400w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Colt-190514-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Colt-190514.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-33305\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Very little original finish on this one but lots of patina.<\/p><\/div>\n<h2>Review Gun<\/h2>\n<p>This is actually my wife&#8217;s pistol.\u00a0 I bought it for her a few years back as a &#8220;dress up&#8221; pistol.\u00a0 A night on the town pistol if you will.\u00a0 It originally had rubber grips but I found a set of original pearls to fancy it up a bit.<\/p>\n<p>As you can see there is very little of the original finish left on this example.\u00a0 I thought about rebluing this one like I did to the 1903 in the previous article, but I couldn&#8217;t bring myself to do it.\u00a0 Not that the Vest Pockets are super rare or valuable but this one looks, for lack of a better word, cool with some natural wear.\u00a0 We will address the to refinish or not to refinish in a future article.<\/p>\n<p>This example was made in 1920 and has the magazine disconnect.\u00a0 Before I shot it for the first time, I detail stripped it and replaced the recoil and striker spring.<\/p>\n<h2>Shooting<\/h2>\n<p>This is not as fun to shoot as the Pocket Hammerless.\u00a0 The recoil is not an issue, a steel framed pistol in .25 ACP is not exactly a beast.\u00a0 It is more of a size thing.\u00a0 This pistol is tiny and getting a good grip while pressing the grip safety can be a challenge.\u00a0 I have never had a problem with grip safety, hell I carry a 1911 more often than not.\u00a0 But this one is, and other examples of the Vest Pocket I have shot, a bit clumsy to shoot. I don&#8217;t have particularly big hands either.\u00a0 When I shoot it I have to squeeze the whole pistol to get it to go bang.\u00a0 It reminds me of the old S&amp;W Safety Hammerless, aka the Lemon Squeezer.\u00a0 There is another good idea for a Shooting History article!<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_33324\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Colt-190518.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"shooting-history-colt-1908-vest-pocket-old-gun-review\" title=\"Shooting History: Colt 1908 Vest Pocket--Old Gun Review\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-33324\" title=\"Shooting History: Colt 1908 Vest Pocket--Old Gun Review\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-33324\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Colt-190518-400x266.jpg\" alt=\"From 15 feet. I have a hard time not dipping the barrel on the 1908. I think it is from squeezing the grip safety.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The grip safety squeezing aside, the Vest Pocket does work and shoots well for a pistol of its size.\u00a0 This is especially true when you take into account the size of the sights.\u00a0 But this was not designed not intended to be a target gun.\u00a0 This is a hold out or &#8220;belly&#8221; pistol.\u00a0 From 15 feet if will easily put 6 rounds into a man sized target in a hurry.\u00a0 But they are tiny little holes.\u00a0 See the pictures for an idea on group sizes.<\/p>\n<p>For this review we ran about a 100 rounds FMJ and Hornady XTP.\u00a0 Both preformed without a problem.\u00a0 I had never tried hollow points in the Vest Pocket until this review and was pleasantly surprised with the way it handled them.\u00a0 Its big brother 1903 has never liked them.<\/p>\n<h2>Relevance<\/h2>\n<p>So is the old Colt Vest Pocket still relevant?\u00a0 In my opinion not as much as the Pocket Hammerless.\u00a0 For one the .25 ACP is not exactly a great carry round. You can also get a new pistol that is about this size in .32 or .380 now.\u00a0 I also would be leery of carrying a Vest Pocket with a round in the chamber.\u00a0 I do not feel confident in the striker holding if it was dropped.\u00a0 But it is sure is a good looking little pistol.\u00a0 It does go well in the vest pocket of a 3 piece suit.\u00a0 Not that I wear many of those. If I did, a Pocket Hammerless would be in the coat pocket.<\/p>\n<p>[one_half]<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_33303\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a
