Rick Snyder.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.legislature.mi.gov\/(S(2kq1ak55t3rc4xie4u4uq545))\/mileg.aspx?page=getObject&amp;objectName=2014-SB-0789\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"michigan-governor-vetoes-nra-backed-bill\" title=\"Michigan Governor Vetoes NRA-Backed Bill\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">S.B. 789 <\/a>would have streamlined the issuance process for concealed carry applicants by removing county review boards from the equation, but last minute pressure from Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America may have swayed the Republican governor to not sign the bill.<\/p>\n<p>As it came time to sign the bill, Moms began claiming that the measure would remove safeguards that keep guns out of the hands domestic abusers and stalkers &#8212; a narrative that Snyder ended up embracing.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We simply can&#8217;t and won&#8217;t take the chance of exposing domestic abuse victims to additional violence or intimidation,&#8221; Snyder said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There are certainly some reforms that can improve the way Michigan issues concealed pistol licenses and we support the rights of law-abiding firearm owners, but it&#8217;s crucial that we leave in place protections for people who already have endured challenges and abuse,&#8221; he continued.<\/p>\n<p>For Shannon Watts, the founder of the Bloomberg-financed gun-control organization, it was a decisive victory.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter years of operating in state legislatures unchecked, the NRA\u2019s agenda of putting gun manufacturers&#8217; profits above the safety of women is now being defeated in state after state,\u201d said Watts in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA recent study of women killed by their intimate partners showed that one out of five women who had an active restraining order were killed within two days of receiving it,&#8221; said Watts. &#8220;Guns and domestic violence are a deadly combination that Governor Snyder rightfully rejected by vetoing this dangerous legislation. Michigan women and families will be safer for it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, the National Rifle Association defended the bill, saying that opponents were making &#8220;false assertions.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Once again, national gun ban groups, led by billionaire Michael Bloomberg, are exploiting the issue of domestic violence to push their extreme agenda,&#8221; said Chris Cox, executive director of the NRA&#8217;s Institute for Legislative Action. &#8220;Bloomberg and the other national anti-gun groups know that the only way they can further their agenda is to lie and try to scare people.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In an a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nraila.org\/articles\/20150115\/michigan-governor-snyder-vetoes-nra-s-concealed-pistol-reform-bill\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"michigan-governor-vetoes-nra-backed-bill\" title=\"Michigan Governor Vetoes NRA-Backed Bill\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rticle on NRA-ILA,<\/a> the nation&#8217;s gun lobby addressed concerns:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Simply put, if an individual is a domestic-abuser and has been charged or convicted as such, or a judge has made a determination that the individual should not be allowed to purchase or possess a firearm, that person will be prohibited from receiving a concealed pistol license under [the bill],&#8221; the NRA said. &#8220;No exceptions.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The NRA said it would regroup, and work to reintroduce the bill into the Legislature ASAP.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Michigan missed out on enacting a true &#8216;shall-issue&#8217; concealed carry law Thursday, thanks to the veto power of Gov.
