Even though I’m a writer who specializes in guns, I own very few myself. Or maybe its because I get to review guns (that I return to manufacturers) that I don’t own too many myself. Regardless, I protect what’s mine. Before I owned a gun safe, I would often hide guns in silly places before leaving town for any kind of trip. I would make sure I’d returned everything I could return, and then engage in some serious obfuscation. It was ludicrous, and I wised up quickly.<\/p>\n

Even after, when I’d gotten a safe, I’d still look for creative places to hide guns. I once took several up to my local police department, where a friend locked them up for me while I went on an extended trip. I felt pretty safe that time, even though I did wonder if the department was out test driving the .50 I’d left with them.<\/p>\n

It even comes with batteries. Battery life is monitored and displayed in the reports.<\/p><\/div>\n

Now I have another option. Liberty makes great safes. They also make solid extras that go with safes. SafElert, which is hard to type, is easy to understand. It is a wireless device that gives you real time updates on your safe. The real benefit is what I’ll call the watch-dog effect–SafElert will text you and email you if the door is opened, or if power goes out, or if the safe (even the handle) moves. That alone makes this worthwhile. The device also monitors what’s going on inside. Temperature and humidity, are easily read through the system.<\/p>\n

SafElert offers text and email notification, and runs on WIFI. So you do have to have a basic level of technological sophistication. And the reports are most easily read on the Elertus website. Elertus is the service that Liberty has partnered with to make all of this possible, and the pairing seems to be ideal.<\/p>\n

I installed the system last week, and I’m thrilled with the peace of mind it provided. If I had been victim to some sort of theft, I may not have been able to stop it myself, but my chances of stopping it become much higher. And since I also have cameras in place, I’ve upped my game significantly. If I get an alert, I’ll know to monitor the situation remotely and alert the appropriate authorities (and neighbors) to what’s happening.<\/p>\n

The instillation was easy. It begins with getting the remote monitoring box set up on your home network. That’s as easy as knowing the passwords. After linking the box into the network, and then initiating the service, you place it inside the safe. If the steel (or the location of the safe) blocks the WIFI signal, there is an external antenna that has a thin cord that snakes back into the safe.<\/p>\n

Now here’s the best part. The whole package, including the monitoring, only costs $199. Emails and texts, weekly reports, real-time status 24 hours a day, remote monitoring, hardware–all for $199? Not bad. Read more about the system here.<\/a><\/a><\/p>\n
