{"id":29072,"date":"2014-12-18T13:17:56","date_gmt":"2014-12-18T18:17:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/blog\/?p=29072"},"modified":"2014-12-18T13:17:56","modified_gmt":"2023-08-18T07:40:23","slug":"australian-lawmaker-cafe-siege-just-not-acceptable-disarmed-victims","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/australian-lawmaker-cafe-siege-just-not-acceptable-disarmed-victims\/","title":{"rendered":"Australian Lawmaker on Cafe Siege: &#8216;It&#8217;s just not acceptable that we are all disarmed victims&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Following a shooting at a cafe in Sydney, Australia, Monday, at least one Liberal Democratic lawmaker is openly criticizing the nation&#8217;s stringent gun laws, suggesting that they leave citizens unarmed and defenseless in the face of evil.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What happened in that cafe would have been most unlikely to have occurred in Florida, Texas, or Vermont, or Alaska in America, or perhaps even Switzerland as well,&#8221; senator David Leyonhjelm told the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2014-12-18\/australia-a-nation-of-victims-says-pro-gun-senator-leyonhjelm\/5974684\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"australian-lawmaker-cafe-siege-just-not-acceptable-disarmed-victims\" title=\"Australian Lawmaker on Cafe Siege: 'It's just not acceptable that we are all disarmed victims'\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ABC&#8217;s AM program<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Statistically speaking&#8221; in those places, &#8220;one or two of the victims&#8221; would have had a concealed firearm, he continued.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That nutcase who held them all hostage wouldn&#8217;t have known they were armed and bad guys don&#8217;t like to be shot back at,&#8221; said Leyonhjelm.<\/p>\n<p>The &#8220;nutcase&#8221; Leyonhjelm was referring to was 50-year-old Man Haron Monis, an iranian born cleric. Using a shotgun that he obtained illegally, Monis took 17 people hostage in a cafe in downtown Sydney on Monday. To turn an entire population into a nation of victims is just unforgivable in my estimation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Leyonhjelm also condemned recently enacted laws aimed at preventing violence.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve got tougher laws, they were introduced by the Government just in the last few months, they did nothing to prevent this bloke from committing evil acts in the name of Islamism,&#8221; Senator Leyonhjelm said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They didn&#8217;t prevent him from getting a gun.
