Coming off a victory in Washington state with the passage of I-594<\/a>, Everytown for Gun Safety is setting its sights on Nevada as the next state to push for universal background checks on all firearms sales and transfers, including those made over the Internet and at gun shows.<\/p>\n

Working in conjunction with the pro-gun control group Nevadans for Background Checks, Everytown collected approximately 250,000 signatures, which far exceeds the 101,667 signatures required for a ballot initiative.<\/p>\n

Citing poll data that suggests there is widespread support for background checks, allegedly eight out of 10 residents back the idea, proponents of the UBC ballot initiative believe that it’s only a matter of time.<\/p>\n

\u201cClearly, Nevadans want their elected leaders to require background checks on all gun sales,\u201d Kayla Keller of Nevadans for Background Checks told the Las Vegas Review-Journal<\/a>. \u201cBut if they refuse to act, the people of Nevada will have a chance to take matters into their own hands by voting for the Background Check Initiative in 2016.\u201d<\/p>\n

Once the signatures are verified, the UBC measure will go before the state Legislature. The Legislature will then have 40 days to review it. Lawmakers can pass it, which would then send it to the governor’s desk. However, if they fail to vote on the measure or vote it down, it will then go on the 2016 ballot for voters to decide.<\/p>\n

In 2013, Gov. Brian Sandoval vetoed a UBC bill that was approved by the Legislature. But given that pro-gun Republicans have majorities in both chambers, it’s unlikely that lawmakers will pass this latest UBC measure. So, in all likelihood, voters in Nevada will make the call in 2016.<\/p>\n

Just like in Washington state, there’s little doubt that Everytown will be dumping more of Bloomberg’s money into supporting this cause. According to Politico<\/a>, the former New York City mayor spent $40 million on the midterm elections, supporting pro-gun control candidates and ballots nationwide.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
