(Photo: TSA)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The Transportation Security Administration<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.tsa.gov\/2014\/11\/a-record-breaking-1855-firearms.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"tsa-breaks-record-1855-guns-collected-2014\" title=\"TSA breaks record with 1,855 guns collected in 2014\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> announced on this week<\/a> that a record breaking 1,855 firearms were collected from carry-on-bags in airports nationwide in 2014.<\/p>\n<p>Of those discovered, more than 1,471 (79%) were loaded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the same period a total of 3,048 firearms, firearm components, replica firearms, stun guns, and other similar dangerous objects have been discovered by TSA from passengers in their carry-on luggage,\u201d Jeh Johnson, Secretary for Homeland Security, said Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLast week alone, TSA discovered 41 firearms (34 of which were loaded), 16 stun guns, four replica grenades, a 13-inch cane sword, and a box-cutter found concealed in the lining of a carry-on bag,&#8221; Johnson continued.<\/p>\n<p>In 2013, the total number of guns collected was 1,813, which is 42 fewer than the 2014 tally thus far with the busy holiday travel season still to come.<\/p>\n<p>Johnson said that about 20 percent of the time the individual responsible for the firearm is arrested, which led him to remind travelers to know the basics if they plan on bringing their gun on their trip:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Travelers must declare all firearms to the airline during the ticket counter check-in process.<\/li>\n<li>The firearm must be unloaded.<\/li>\n<li>The firearm must be in a hard-sided container.<\/li>\n<li>The container must be locked. A locked container is defined as one that completely secures the firearm from being accessed.
