While cleaning his firearm Tuesday afternoon, former baseball standout Jose Canseco accidentally shot himself, reports local media<\/a>.<\/p>\n

He was rushed from his home in Las Vegas to the University Medical Center of Southern Nevada, where he underwent surgery to save a finger on his left hand that was nearly blown off.<\/p>\n

Canseco’s fiancee tweeted this message to his fans and followers.<\/p>\n

This is Leila . Thank you all for the kind words and prayers . Jose is in still surgery and will be ok. Please pray for his finger !!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

While negligent discharges are becoming less frequent, they still happen. Remember to be careful. And always be mindful of the four rules of gun safety:<\/p>\n

  2. Never let the muzzle cover anything you are not willing to destroy.<\/li>\n
