FWP said the illegal hunting occurred on Nelson\u2019s farm and neighboring properties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The violations involved deer, antelope and upland game birds. As the case expanded, wardens seized or received the surrender of more than 100 deer and antelope mounts, antlers and horns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That distinction is worth noting: authorities did not seize more than 100 live animals. They recovered trophies and remains associated with animals investigators determined had been taken illegally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-decades-of-lost-hunting-privileges\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Decades of Lost Hunting Privileges<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under a plea agreement, Nelson was fined and lost his Montana hunting privileges for eight years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Three nonresident hunters received lifetime Montana hunting bans, while the remaining penalties added up to 44 years without hunting privileges. One additional hunter\u2019s case remained pending with the McCone County Attorney\u2019s Office when FWP announced the results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">FWP said all but two of the suspects pleaded guilty, accepted responsibility and cooperated with investigators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>SEE ALSO: <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/colt-government-model-45-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"hunt365-montana-poaching-case-100-seized-trophies\" title=\"Montana Poaching Case Ends With 100+ Seized Trophies\">Colt Government Model .45: 1000 Rounds Later<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThese hunters displayed zero regard for ethical hunter behavior or the lawful pursuit of these animals,\u201d McCone County game warden John Huberty said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Huberty also described McCone County as a special place with world-class wildlife. That quality is exactly what makes a case of this size sting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-poaching-is-not-hunting\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Poaching Is Not Hunting<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ethical hunters follow seasons, obtain permission, buy licenses and respect bag limits because those rules protect wildlife and preserve future opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Poachers do the opposite. They steal animals from the public, undermine landowner relationships and give legitimate hunters a black eye.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This case also shows how much work can go into unraveling years of wildlife violations. Wardens began investigating in 2024, but the conduct they uncovered reportedly stretched back about a decade and crossed multiple state lines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Montana FWP is asking anyone with information about wildlife crimes to submit a report through <a href=\"https:\/\/tipmont.mt.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"hunt365-montana-poaching-case-100-seized-trophies\" title=\"Montana Poaching Case Ends With 100+ Seized Trophies\">TIP-MONT<\/a>, call 1-800-TIP-MONT at 1-800-847-6668 or contact a local game warden.
