{"id":25988,"date":"2014-10-15T14:12:39","date_gmt":"2014-10-15T18:12:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/blog\/?p=25988"},"modified":"2014-10-15T14:12:39","modified_gmt":"2023-08-18T03:05:32","slug":"feminist-cancels-university-talk-cites-utahs-pro-concealed-carry-laws","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/feminist-cancels-university-talk-cites-utahs-pro-concealed-carry-laws\/","title":{"rendered":"Feminist cancels university talk, cites Utah&#8217;s pro-concealed carry laws"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Anita Sarkeesian, a feminist and youtube blogger (see video above), canceled her scheduled speech at Utah State University on Wednesday because she was unnerved by the state&#8217;s pro-gun laws in the wake of a death threat, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.deseretnews.com\/article\/865613127\/Feminist-speaker-cancels-Utah-State-visit-following-threat-of-campus-shooting.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"feminist-cancels-university-talk-cites-utahs-pro-concealed-carry-laws\" title=\"Feminist cancels university talk, cites Utah's pro-concealed carry laws\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">local media reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>According to school officials, staff members received an anonymous threat vowing &#8220;the deadliest school shooting in American history&#8221; if Sarkeesian was allowed to give her presentation.<\/p>\n<p>Staff members then notified Sarkeesian of the threat, but assured her that security measures would be put in place to keep her safe. They also learned that the threat was &#8220;similar to other threats that Sarkeesian has received in the past.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Yet, once she learned of the state&#8217;s pro-concealed carry laws, which allow a an individual to carry a firearm into the venue provided he or she has a valid concealed firearm permit, she opted to cancel the speech.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" lang=\"en\"><p>Forced to cancel my talk at USU after receiving death threats because police wouldn&#8217;t take steps to prevent concealed firearms at the event.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Feminist Frequency (@femfreq) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/femfreq\/status\/522204937178976257\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"feminist-cancels-university-talk-cites-utahs-pro-concealed-carry-laws\" title=\"Feminist cancels university talk, cites Utah's pro-concealed carry laws\">October 15, 2014<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" lang=\"en\"><p>\nTo be clear: I didn&#8217;t cancel my USU talk because of terrorist threats, I canceled because I didn\u2019t feel the security measures were adequate.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Feminist Frequency (@femfreq) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/femfreq\/status\/522265618456662016\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"feminist-cancels-university-talk-cites-utahs-pro-concealed-carry-laws\" title=\"Feminist cancels university talk, cites Utah's pro-concealed carry laws\">October 15, 2014<\/a>\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Obviously it&#8217;s her decision. If she felt her life was at risk, she certainly shouldn&#8217;t give the speech. But in all honesty she shouldn&#8217;t fear licensed concealed carry permit holders. For one, the individuals have passed a criminal background check. Second, with armed law-abiding citizens in the audience, if anyone were to try and start shooting up the place, that individual would face resistance. In short, it&#8217;d be a suicide for the perpetrator.<\/p>\n<p>But even if she rejects those reasons, she should ask herself about the circumstances in which most mass shootings occur. That is to say, they <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Br2U6Fxyphk\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"feminist-cancels-university-talk-cites-utahs-pro-concealed-carry-laws\" title=\"Feminist cancels university talk, cites Utah's pro-concealed carry laws\">happen in gun-free zones<\/a>, places in which law-abiding citizens are prohibited from carrying. Is that a coincidence? Maybe. Maybe not.<\/p>\n<p>Regardless, it&#8217;s foolish for her to presume that an armed sociopath is going to obey a &#8220;No Guns Allowed&#8221; sign. While Sarkeesian may think she&#8217;s safer in a gun-free zone, there is plenty of evidence to the contrary.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A feminist cancels her presentation at a Utah university because of the state&#8217;s pro-concealed carry laws.
