Sure. Completely invented? No.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The gun-control-focused outlet highlighted a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ajpmonline.org\/article\/S0749-3797(26)00316-8\/abstract\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"lead-ammunition-exposure-shooting-hygiene-study\" title=\"The Trace: Guns Are Toxic!\">new study published in the<\/a> <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ajpmonline.org\/article\/S0749-3797(26)00316-8\/abstract\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"lead-ammunition-exposure-shooting-hygiene-study\" title=\"The Trace: Guns Are Toxic!\">American Journal of Preventive Medicine<\/a><\/em> examining lead ammunition and post-shooting hygiene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The report estimates that roughly six million American children live in households where someone shoots lead-based ammunition but practices no post-shooting hygiene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That number sounds alarming. This is a rather dramatic rendering of lead exposure after a day at the range.  <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-yoast-seo-table-of-contents yoast-table-of-contents\"><h2>Table of contents<\/h2><ul><li><a href=\"#h-what-the-study-actually-measured\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"lead-ammunition-exposure-shooting-hygiene-study\" title=\"The Trace: Guns Are Toxic!\" data-level=\"2\">What the Study Actually Measured<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"#h-lead-exposure-at-ranges-is-real\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"lead-ammunition-exposure-shooting-hygiene-study\" title=\"The Trace: Guns Are Toxic!\" data-level=\"2\">Lead Exposure at Ranges Is Real<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"#h-treat-the-ammo-carefully-not-the-gun-like-radioactive-waste\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"lead-ammunition-exposure-shooting-hygiene-study\" title=\"The Trace: Guns Are Toxic!\" data-level=\"2\">Treat the Ammo Carefully, Not the Gun Like Radioactive Waste<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"#h-useful-warning-or-anti-gun-packaging\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"lead-ammunition-exposure-shooting-hygiene-study\" title=\"The Trace: Guns Are Toxic!\" data-level=\"2\">Useful Warning or Anti-Gun Packaging?<\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-what-the-study-actually-measured\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What the Study Actually Measured<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Researchers Christian Hoover and David Hemenway analyzed responses from the December 2024 National Firearm Survey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/42862124\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"lead-ammunition-exposure-shooting-hygiene-study\" title=\"The Trace: Guns Are Toxic!\">study\u2019s PubMed abstract<\/a>, the sample included 1,565 adult gun owners who had fired a firearm during the previous year. Participants either used lead-based ammunition or were unsure what type they used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among those surveyed:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>97% reported using lead ammunition or were unsure of the ammunition or primer type.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>46% reported no post-shooting hygiene practices.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>30% reported using only one hygiene practice.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>32% primarily shot at indoor ranges.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>94% reported shooting monthly or less.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The hygiene practices included showering, changing clothes or shoes and isolating range equipment before bringing it into the home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Researchers then used the survey results to estimate how many children live in households fitting those conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here is the critical distinction: The study did not test six million children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It did not collect blood samples from the children, measure lead dust inside their homes or determine whether any particular range trip caused harmful exposure. It identified shooting and hygiene habits, then estimated how many children may live in households with a potential exposure pathway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That does not make the study worthless. It simply means the six-million figure describes possible risk, not six million confirmed cases of lead poisoning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/hsph.harvard.edu\/news\/most-gun-owners-use-lead-ammunition-yet-half-dont-practice-hygiene-behaviors-after-shooting\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"lead-ammunition-exposure-shooting-hygiene-study\" title=\"The Trace: Guns Are Toxic!\">Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health summary<\/a> also notes that future research is needed to determine whether specific hygiene practices reduce childhood blood-lead concentrations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-lead-exposure-at-ranges-is-real\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lead Exposure at Ranges Is Real<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gun owners should not dismiss the underlying concern simply because The Trace delivered it with a familiar anti-gun flavor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lead can become airborne when a firearm is discharged, particularly when ammunition uses lead-based bullets or primers. Shooters can inhale those particles or carry contaminated dust away on their hands, clothing, shoes, range bags and phones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Indoor ranges present additional concerns when their ventilation and cleaning systems are inadequate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/niosh\/bulletin\/firingrange\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"lead-ammunition-exposure-shooting-hygiene-study\" title=\"The Trace: Guns Are Toxic!\">National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health<\/a> has documented how lead dust from firearms can contaminate surfaces and transfer to a shooter\u2019s skin or clothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NIOSH\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/niosh\/docs\/2009-136\/pdfs\/2009-136.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"lead-ammunition-exposure-shooting-hygiene-study\" title=\"The Trace: Guns Are Toxic!\">firing-range exposure guidance<\/a> recommends washing exposed skin, changing clothing and shoes, and preventing contaminated gear from entering vehicles and homes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In other words, lead is toxic. That part is not a political opinion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The leap comes when a potential exposure source gets presented as though every gun owner is poisoning children by visiting the range.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is not what this study established.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-treat-the-ammo-carefully-not-the-gun-like-radioactive-waste\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Treat the Ammo Carefully, Not the Gun Like Radioactive Waste<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hoover told The Trace that shooters using lead-based ammunition should treat the activity \u201cas though it were toxic.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is more precise than saying guns themselves are toxic. The concern is lead residue created during shooting, not the mere presence of a clean firearm locked in a safe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fortunately, reducing the risk does not require a hazmat team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After shooting lead ammunition:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Wash hands, forearms and face before eating, drinking or smoking.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use lead-removal soap or wipes when available.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Change clothes and shoes before spending time around young children.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Keep range bags and shooting gear outside children\u2019s living or play areas.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bag potentially contaminated clothing and wash it separately.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Shower after returning home, especially following a long indoor session.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Choose a range with proper ventilation and good housekeeping practices.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Consider lead-free ammunition and primers when practical.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A separate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/niosh\/hhe\/reports\/pdfs\/2016-0232-3285.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"lead-ammunition-exposure-shooting-hygiene-study\" title=\"The Trace: Guns Are Toxic!\">NIOSH evaluation of an indoor law-enforcement range<\/a> specifically recommended lead-removal soap, dedicated range clothing and keeping contaminated shoes from tracking residue into homes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These are simple habits. They do not require anyone to surrender a firearm, close a range or accept another round of gun-control legislation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-useful-warning-or-anti-gun-packaging\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Useful Warning or Anti-Gun Packaging?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The study raises a legitimate issue that deserves more attention from shooters, range operators and ammunition manufacturers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It also has clear limitations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It measured self-reported behavior, not actual lead transferred into homes. It estimated the number of potentially affected children but did not examine those children. It also did not prove that showering or changing clothes produces a measurable reduction in pediatric blood-lead levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That research still needs to happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The smart response is neither panic nor denial. Gun owners can recognize a preventable lead hazard without accepting the suggestion that firearms or shooting culture are inherently poisonous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>So, what do you think?
