{"id":259532,"date":"2026-10-21T10:17:03","date_gmt":"2026-10-21T15:17:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/?p=259532"},"modified":"2026-10-21T10:17:30","modified_gmt":"2026-10-21T15:17:30","slug":"would-you-trade-2a-rights-for-healthcare","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/would-you-trade-2a-rights-for-healthcare\/","title":{"rendered":"Would You Trade 2A Rights for Healthcare?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Guns or government-run healthcare?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is the constitutional trade Dan Bongino recently put before his audience after revisiting comments from Abdul El-Sayed, Michigan\u2019s Democratic nominee for the U.S. Senate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a video originally posted in 2023, El-Sayed asked, \u201cWhat if we tweaked the Constitution?\u201d He then floated replacing the right to bear arms with a right to healthcare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The video was later made private, but <a href=\"https:\/\/thereload.com\/michigans-democratic-senate-candidate-floated-replacing-the-second-amendment\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"would-you-trade-2a-rights-for-healthcare\" title=\"Would You Trade 2A Rights for Healthcare?\"><em>The Reload<\/em> reported on the remarks<\/a> after El-Sayed\u2019s Senate campaign gained momentum. The comment was made in the aftermath of the Covenant School shooting in Nashville, so it was not a new proposal delivered during the current campaign. Still, it has followed El-Sayed into the general election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"They\u2019re Coming for Gun Owners \u2014 and It\u2019s on the Record\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/DYBZdXzdyls?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-bongino-isn-t-buying-the-tweak\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bongino Isn\u2019t Buying the \u201cTweak\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bongino\u2019s response was about as subtle as a flashbang.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He argued that removing the right to keep and bear arms would not qualify as a minor constitutional adjustment. It would eliminate one of the protections contained in the Bill of Rights and replace it with a government-provided benefit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That distinction formed the backbone of his commentary. The Bill of Rights largely tells the government what it cannot do to citizens. It cannot silence speech, prohibit peaceful assembly, ignore due process or infringe the right to keep and bear arms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A constitutional right to healthcare would work differently. It would require some combination of taxpayer funding, government administration and services provided by healthcare professionals. Bongino argued that these are two fundamentally different kinds of rights and should not be casually swapped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He also aimed his comments directly at Democratic gun owners, asking why someone who values the 2A would vote for a candidate who once proposed removing it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is a fair question for voters, even if Bongino\u2019s answer is already crystal clear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Abdul El-Sayed confronts question in viral video\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Fn6XzCXCiHQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-comment-hasn-t-gone-away\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Comment Hasn\u2019t Gone Away<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">El-Sayed had another opportunity to put the issue to rest in August 2026. When asked during a television interview whether he still supported replacing the Second Amendment, he did not offer a direct disavowal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead, he argued that more Americans are worried about being able to see a doctor than about owning a firearm. He also said he was comfortable with people possessing hunting rifles. That answer did little to settle concerns among gun-rights supporters because the Second Amendment is not limited to hunting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">El-Sayed went on to win Michigan\u2019s Democratic Senate primary and is now facing Republican Mike Rogers in the general election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms also jumped into the fight. CCRKBA Chairman Alan Gottlieb called El-Sayed\u2019s proposal extreme and argued that other Democratic leaders should publicly reject it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">El-Sayed\u2019s own <a href=\"https:\/\/abdulforsenate.com\/endorsements\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"would-you-trade-2a-rights-for-healthcare\" title=\"Would You Trade 2A Rights for Healthcare?\">endorsements page<\/a> lists GIFFORDS PAC and a Moms Demand Action \u201cGun Sense Candidate\u201d designation. GIFFORDS also <a href=\"https:\/\/giffords.org\/press-release\/2026\/08\/giffords-pac-endorses-abdul-el-sayed-for-us-senate\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"would-you-trade-2a-rights-for-healthcare\" title=\"Would You Trade 2A Rights for Healthcare?\">announced its endorsement<\/a> in August.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Prayer | Abdul for Senate\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/W_sJpQl3QMQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-not-exactly-a-quick-edit\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Not Exactly a Quick Edit<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the record, no senator, president or political party can simply open the Constitution, hit backspace and replace the Second Amendment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under <a href=\"https:\/\/constitution.congress.gov\/browse\/essay\/artV-1\/ALDE_00000507\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"would-you-trade-2a-rights-for-healthcare\" title=\"Would You Trade 2A Rights for Healthcare?\">Article V<\/a>, an amendment must be proposed by two-thirds of both houses of Congress or through a convention requested by two-thirds of the states. It then must be ratified by three-fourths of the states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Calling that process a \u201ctweak\u201d is doing some serious work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is also no practical reason healthcare reform and the Second Amendment must be treated as an either-or proposition. Congress can debate Medicare for All, private insurance, public options or any other healthcare plan without deleting an enumerated constitutional right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But El-Sayed framed the trade himself, and Bongino wants gun owners to take that seriously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, what do you think?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Would any promise of government-run healthcare convince you to give up the right to keep and bear arms?
