But after a four-year disappearing act, Dr. John Lott says the bigger question is why the agency removed them in the first place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/crimeresearch.org\/2026\/09\/on-one-america-news-the-cdc-puts-defensive-gun-use-data-back-up-on-their-website\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"john-lott-cdc-restores-defensive-gun-use-data\" title=\"John Lott: CDC Restores Defensive Gun Use Data\"><em>One America News<\/em> interview<\/a>, the Crime Prevention Research Center president argued that political pressure influenced how the federal government presented defensive gun-use research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lott expanded on that argument in a new <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2026\/10\/09\/new-trump-admin-stats-prove-good-guys-with-guns-save-lives\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"john-lott-cdc-restores-defensive-gun-use-data\" title=\"John Lott: CDC Restores Defensive Gun Use Data\"><em>Federalist<\/em> op-ed<\/a>. He credited the Trump administration with restoring the material and correcting part of the CDC\u2019s original estimate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"On One America News to Discuss the CDC Censoring Defensive Gun Use Data\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/fQSle5qM57A?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-numbers-that-disappeared\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Numbers That Disappeared<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The dispute reaches back to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalacademies.org\/read\/18319\/chapter\/3?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"john-lott-cdc-restores-defensive-gun-use-data\" title=\"John Lott: CDC Restores Defensive Gun Use Data\">2013 National Academies report<\/a> prepared with support from the CDC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That report described defensive gun use as common, although the exact number remained hotly disputed. It said national survey estimates ranged from roughly 500,000 to more than 3 million defensive gun uses annually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It also discussed a much lower estimate of 108,000. The report warned that this figure was difficult to interpret because respondents were not specifically asked about defensive gun use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In other words, the report did not settle the debate. It <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalacademies.org\/read\/18319\/chapter\/3\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"john-lott-cdc-restores-defensive-gun-use-data\" title=\"John Lott: CDC Restores Defensive Gun Use Data\">demonstrated<\/a> how dramatically the answer changes depending on the survey and methodology used. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The CDC previously summarized the range as 60,000 to 2.5 million defensive uses each year. That language disappeared from its website in 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-emails-raise-questions\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Emails Raise Questions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The removal did not happen in a vacuum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thereload.com\/emails-cdc-removed-defensive-gun-use-stats-after-gun-control-advocates-pressured-officials-in-private-meeting\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"john-lott-cdc-restores-defensive-gun-use-data\" title=\"John Lott: CDC Restores Defensive Gun Use Data\">Emails obtained through a public-records request<\/a> showed several gun-control advocates lobbying CDC officials over the numbers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The correspondence also showed that the Biden White House and Sen. Dick Durbin\u2019s office helped connect the advocates with agency officials. Durbin\u2019s office said it was simply helping interested organizations reach a federal agency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CDC researchers initially defended the website\u2019s language. They noted that media and police reports capture only a fraction of defensive incidents, especially cases where someone displays a firearm without firing it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After a private September 2021 meeting, however, the CDC agreed to revise the page. By May 2022, the numerical range was gone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/thereload.com\/emails-cdc-removed-defensive-gun-use-stats-after-gun-control-advocates-pressured-officials-in-private-meeting\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"john-lott-cdc-restores-defensive-gun-use-data\" title=\"John Lott: CDC Restores Defensive Gun Use Data\">emails<\/a> also showed that some advocates objected because gun-rights supporters used the estimates against proposed firearm restrictions. That is the part Lott finds particularly troubling. Whether information helps or hurts legislation, he argues, should not determine whether a federal health agency publishes it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-numbers-return\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Numbers Return<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Trump administration restored the old 60,000-to-2.5-million range in July 2026. The CDC then changed the lower number to 500,000 in late September.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/firearm-violence\/about\/index.html?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"john-lott-cdc-restores-defensive-gun-use-data\" title=\"John Lott: CDC Restores Defensive Gun Use Data\">CDC\u2019s current page<\/a> now says the National Academies report indicates between 500,000 and 2.5 million defensive gun uses annually. It also plainly acknowledges that estimates vary based on survey questions, populations and research methods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One detail is worth clearing up. The current CDC range ends at 2.5 million, not more than 3 million. The National Academies report discussed survey estimates exceeding 3 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, the CDC corrected the lower end of its range, but it did not reproduce the National Academies language exactly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>SEE ALSO: <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/taurus-tx22-braced-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"john-lott-cdc-restores-defensive-gun-use-data\" title=\"John Lott: CDC Restores Defensive Gun Use Data\">Taurus TX22 Braced Review: The TX22 With a Folding Brace<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Critics still <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetrace.org\/2026\/10\/defensive-gun-use-statistics-cdc-data-gary-kleck\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"john-lott-cdc-restores-defensive-gun-use-data\" title=\"John Lott: CDC Restores Defensive Gun Use Data\">dispute<\/a> the larger estimates. They argue that surveys measuring relatively rare events can produce inflated numbers when researchers extrapolate from a small number of responses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Supporters counter that crime surveys can miss defensive uses when no shot is fired, no police report is made or the respondent is never directly asked about firearms. That methodological fight is nowhere close to finished.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-lott-s-separate-fight-with-the-fbi\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lott\u2019s Separate Fight With the FBI<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lott\u2019s op-ed also revisits his argument that the FBI undercounts armed citizens who stop active shooters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The FBI identified 16 armed-citizen interventions among 408 active-shooter incidents from 2014 through 2025. Lott says CPRC found 225 interventions among a broader list of 615 incidents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those figures come from a separate debate over classifications and missing cases. The CDC estimates cover defensive gun use generally. They do not specifically measure civilians stopping mass-casualty attacks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still, Lott sees both controversies as part of the same problem: federal agencies presenting incomplete <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2026\/10\/09\/new-trump-admin-stats-prove-good-guys-with-guns-save-lives\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"john-lott-cdc-restores-defensive-gun-use-data\" title=\"John Lott: CDC Restores Defensive Gun Use Data\">information<\/a> about armed self-defense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The exact number of defensive gun uses remains unsettled.
