Police found a wounded man outside the residence and immediately provided first aid. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Homeowner shoots suspected intruder in Mesquite, police say\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2erztrVstAE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Residents told investigators that loud banging woke them from sleep. One resident went to investigate and reportedly saw someone entering the home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That resident grabbed a firearm and opened fire, striking the suspected intruder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Police identified the wounded man as Arthur Alonzo. Police also have not disclosed how he allegedly entered the house, how many shots were fired or where he was struck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The resident who fired has not been publicly identified. No charges against that individual had been announced as of the latest report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>FOX 4 <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox4news.com\/news\/mesquite-homeowner-shoots-intruder-during-early-morning-home-invasion-police-say?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"mesquite-homeowner-shoots-intruder\" title=\"Texas Homeowner Shoots Alleged Intruder During Break-In\">independently<\/a> reported the same basic sequence, citing information from the Mesquite Police Department. That report also confirmed that officers found the wounded suspect outside the home and rendered aid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-texas-law-and-forced-entry\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Texas Law and Forced Entry<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Texas law gives residents strong legal protections when confronting someone who unlawfully and forcibly enters an occupied home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under <a href=\"https:\/\/statutes.capitol.texas.gov\/DocViewer.aspx?DocKey=PE%2FPE.9\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"mesquite-homeowner-shoots-intruder\" title=\"Texas Homeowner Shoots Alleged Intruder During Break-In\">Section 9.32 of the Texas Penal Code<\/a>, a resident\u2019s belief that deadly force was immediately necessary can be presumed reasonable when the person targeted unlawfully and forcibly entered, or attempted to enter, an occupied habitation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That protection still depends on the circumstances. The person using force must not have provoked the confrontation or been engaged in unrelated criminal activity. Police and prosecutors determine whether the facts satisfy those requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For now, the publicly available information points to a fairly straightforward defensive gun use: residents awoke to banging, someone allegedly entered their home and an armed occupant responded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Alonzo faces an allegation, not a conviction, and the Mesquite Police Department says its investigation remains ongoing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>The right to defend yourself is guaranteed.
