That warning could give a family precious time to respond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Israeli also claimed that 98 percent of <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/ak-47-hog-blaster\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"dogs-better-guns-home-defense\" title=\"Dogs Are Better Than Guns for Home Defense...\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"7820\">gun owners do not know how to use their firearms<\/a>. He dismissed ordinary range practice as inadequate preparation for an actual <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/ep-33-should-i-shoot-the-late-night-prowler\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"dogs-better-guns-home-defense\" title=\"Dogs Are Better Than Guns for Home Defense...\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"7822\">home invasion<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The clip provided no source for that 98 percent figure. The owner and family also need training. The dog needs continued work, proper handling and clear boundaries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Israeli has previously described a fully trained protection dog as being \u201clike a weapon.\u201d He also emphasized that owners must remain in control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In other words, the training argument cuts both ways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-case-for-the-gun\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Case for the Gun<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Noir agrees that <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/hunt365-going-the-distance-the-long-range-hunting-course-by-outdoors-solutions\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"dogs-better-guns-home-defense\" title=\"Dogs Are Better Than Guns for Home Defense...\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"7824\">firearms owners should practice<\/a>. Training can improve judgment, safe handling and confidence under stress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He rejects the idea that someone needs an elite r\u00e9sum\u00e9 before becoming capable of defending a home, however.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most defensive gun owners are not former commandos. They are ordinary people who learned to operate their firearms safely and decided they would not be helpless during an emergency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A dog might provide an earlier warning, but a firearm can address an immediate deadly threat. It also does not become substantially less useful when two or three intruders enter the house instead of one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dogs are brave and capable, but they are not bulletproof. They can also become confused, frightened or distracted during an unfamiliar confrontation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then there is Nash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-nash-chose-hospitality\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Nash Chose Hospitality<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"\u2018Guard dog\u2019 Nash greets burglars with a toy inside San Diego house\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3CIphj86HO0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nash is a golden retriever <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/09\/18\/us\/san-diego-intruder-dog-video.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"dogs-better-guns-home-defense\" title=\"Dogs Are Better Than Guns for Home Defense...\">belonging<\/a> to San Diego homeowner Dante Rowley. When an intruder used a ladder to enter Rowley\u2019s house through an upstairs window, Nash did not attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He did not even bark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead, the friendly retriever repeatedly approached the stranger with toys. The intruder helped himself to food, removed some clothing and apparently took a nap before police arrested him. Nash also greeted the responding officers with a toy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nash may not have a future in private security, but he appears fully qualified for hotel management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of course, comparing Nash with one of Israeli\u2019s trained German shepherds is hardly fair. A family pet and a purpose-trained protection dog are two entirely different animals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That distinction is also Noir\u2019s point. Most Americans who own dogs do not own trained protection dogs. They own pets. Some will bark at anything passing the window. Others will apparently offer home invaders refreshments and a guided tour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-why-choose-only-one\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Choose Only One?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The strongest answer may also be the least dramatic: home security works best in layers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A dog can provide noise, deterrence and early warning. Cameras and alarms can show what is happening. Strong doors, reliable locks and exterior lighting can make entry more difficult. A family plan can keep everyone from running blindly toward the disturbance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A firearm can serve as the final defensive option if those other layers fail and someone faces an immediate threat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">None of these tools works automatically. A protection dog requires training. A firearm owner needs safe handling skills, secure storage and familiarity with local law. Families should also discuss where to go and whom to call during an emergency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, where <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/cnn-don-lemon-bashes-protestors\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"dogs-better-guns-home-defense\" title=\"Dogs Are Better Than Guns for Home Defense...\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"7821\">do<\/a> you land?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Would you rather trust a trained protection dog or a firearm when something goes wrong at 2 a.m.?
