The report drops to something closer to a nail gun than a gunshot, the recoil was already nothing, and new shooters stop flinching almost immediately. One of our writers watched a nervous 8-year-old at the range go from hiding behind his dad’s bench to grinning and asking for his own .22, all because of a suppressed rimfire.

The best 22 suppressor for most people is light, takes apart for cleaning and threads straight onto a standard 1/2×28 barrel. Rimfire ammo is filthy. A can you cannot open will eventually gum up with lead and carbon until it is useless, so serviceability matters more here than with any centerfire can.

The money side changed too. The federal $200 transfer tax on suppressors dropped to $0 on January 1, 2026, although you still file the ATF Form 4, pass the background check and wait for approval. That makes a rimfire can one of the easiest first suppressors to justify. The differences that matter are weight, how they come apart, what they are rated for and what they are made of.

Rifle Or Pistol

A .22 rifle needs much less baffle stack to get quiet than a pistol does, because the longer barrel burns more of the powder before the bullet leaves. That is why modular cans like the Rugged Mustang22 and Odin Works NAV 22 are so handy. Run them short on a rifle and long on a pistol. If you want one can for both, the best 22 suppressor for rifle and pistol is a modular one.

Aluminum, Titanium Or Stainless

Aluminum is the lightest, and on a small pistol, weight changes how the gun handles. Stainless steel is heavier but shrugs off abuse and aggressive cleaning. Titanium sits in the middle. Some cans mix materials, using a steel or titanium mount or blast chamber with aluminum baffles. That is often the best of both.

Cleaning And Service Life

Plan to clean a rimfire can every few hundred rounds. Segmented baffles that come out one at a time are the easiest. One-piece baffle stacks are simple, but our Gemtech reviewer warned they can bond to the tube if you let carbon build up. Pull the stack after every range trip and you will be fine.

Caliber Ratings

Most .22 cans are rated for .22 LR, .22 WMR and .17 HMR. Some are not rated for .17 WSM, and a few go up to small centerfire rounds like the .17 Hornet. Check the rating before you put a can on anything hotter than a .22 LR. A can rated for full-auto .22 LR is a good sign of durability.

Ammo Matters

Subsonic ammo is what makes a suppressed .22 really quiet. Supersonic bullets crack as they break the sound barrier no matter what is on the muzzle. Our Rugged reviewer found Federal’s 45-grain suppressor load the quietest in his pistol, and our Gemtech reviewer ran mostly CCI Suppressor ammo, where the loudest sound on the rifle was the bolt closing.

Hosts And The Built-In Option

You need a threaded barrel, usually 1/2×28. Many .22 pistols and rifles ship threaded now, and our best .22 LR rifles guide is a good place to find a host. Rugged builds the baffles and body from 7075 aluminum and the serialized mount from grade 5 titanium, which matters because that engraved part is the suppressor in the eyes of the law and can never be replaced. Titanium there means a long life.

Read our full Rugged Mustang22 review here.

It is modular. Use the provided tool to pull the endcap, split the two sections and put the cap back on the short half. Short, it is 3.4 inches and 2.4 ounces, and our reviewer said the difference in sound between short and long on a rifle was nearly unnoticeable. On his Ruger 22/45 Tactical, he runs it at the full 5.3 inches, because the short setup was a little uncomfortable without ear pro on a pistol.

Each section holds five keyed baffles with indexing tabs, so they go back together the same way every time, and he never noticed first-round pop. Rugged backs it with an unconditional lifetime warranty. MSRP was $465 at the time of review in 2024, and Rugged lists it at $502 in 2026. That is not the cheapest can here, but it is the one we would buy first.

Key Specs

Materials: 7075 aluminum baffles and body, grade 5 titanium mount

Mount: 1/2×28 direct thread

Length: 3.4 in short, 5.3 in long

Weight: 2.4 oz short, 3.3 oz long

Baffles: five per section, keyed and indexed

Warranty: unconditional lifetime

Price: $465 MSRP (2024 review); $502 MSRP (Rugged, 2026)

Pros

Light in either length

Short mode is plenty for rifles

Indexed baffles, no first-round pop noticed

Titanium serialized mount

Cons

Short mode is loud on a pistol

Not the cheapest

🛒 Check Current Price for Rugged Mustang22 on GunsAmerica

Odin Works NAV 22: Best Modular .22 Suppressor (2026)

This is the can Clay Martin bought with his own money after testing it, and he called it the best rimfire can he had tested. High praise from a guy who has shot a lot of them. The NAV 22 is made of eight separate pieces: a 1/2×28 thread mount, a serialized blast chamber in heat-treated 17-4 stainless, five hard-anodized aluminum baffle segments and an end cap.

Read our full Odin Works NAV 22 review here.

Those segments have hidden wrench flats for the included tools, which solves the classic rimfire problem of a can so gummed up you need a torch to open it. You can also pull segments to change the length. Full length, it brings a .22 pistol down to 119 decibels. Short, for a rifle you carry all day after ground squirrels, it is 3 inches and 2.3 ounces.

It is rated for any rimfire plus the 17 Hornet, and it came in black or sand. Odin now sells the NAV 22 2.0, so our 2020 review covers the original version. Function with about a dozen kinds of .22 LR was perfect, and CCI Suppressor ammo averaged 835.7 fps from that pistol.

Read our full Gemtech GM-22 review here.

It is all 7075 aluminum, five inches long and one inch wide, with a one-piece baffle stack that screws out of the tube. Gemtech rates it for .22 LR, .22 WMR and .17 HMR, but not .17 WSM, and for full-auto .22 LR. Gemtech says it cuts 36 to 39 decibels at the muzzle. On an M&P 15-22 rifle, the loudest noise was the bolt slamming home.

The tradeoff is cleaning. Leave it on for hundreds of rounds and the stack can bond to the tube. Unscrew it after every trip and you avoid the problem. MSRP was $395 at the time of review in 2016, and Gemtech lists it at $399 in 2026. That makes it one of the best 22 suppressor options for a pistol on a budget.

Key Specs

Material: 7075 aluminum, Cerakote finish

Length: 5 in

Diameter: 1 in

Weight: 2.5 oz

Mount: 1/2×28 direct thread

Rating: .22 LR (full auto), .22 WMR, .17 HMR

Price: $395 MSRP (2016 review); $399 (Gemtech, 2026)

Pros

Very light for pistols

Simple two-piece design

Rated for full-auto .22 LR

Affordable

Cons

Stack can stick if you skip cleaning

Not rated for .17 WSM

🛒 Check Current Price for Gemtech GM-22 on GunsAmerica

SilencerCo Sparrow 22: Best Stainless .22 Suppressor (2026)

When our Gemtech reviewer brought a Sparrow to the range for a side-by-side test, the Sparrow sounded quieter to him from both the rifle and the pistol. It weighed 6.5 ounces against 2.5 for the GM-22, because it is stainless steel, and it was only about 0.08 inch longer and wider. In your hand, they are basically the same size.

Watch our SilencerCo Sparrow video review here.

The weight buys toughness. The Sparrow uses a one-piece baffle stack wrapped in two clamshell covers, so carbon builds up on the covers instead of welding the stack to the tube. Our reviewer said that makes it less likely to cause disassembly and cleaning headaches. Stainless also tolerates harsher cleaning than aluminum.

SilencerCo’s current Sparrow 22 is listed at 6.5 ounces, 5.08 inches long and 1.07 inches wide, built from 17-4 stainless, with a $349 MSRP in 2026. The Odin Works NAV 22 is the pick if you want to tune the length and clean every segment, and it is the can Clay kept.

The Gemtech GM-22 is the lightest option for a small pistol, as long as you stay on top of cleaning. The SilencerCo Sparrow 22 is heavier, but it was quieter in our side-by-side test and it is the toughest of the bunch.

With the tax stamp at $0, the remaining hurdles are paperwork and the wait.
