A cheap gun saves you money right up until the moment you need it. A budget gun just costs less.

Travis Pike drew that line in our greatest budget blasters roundup, and it is the right place to start. Nobody is impressed by a pistol that is affordable and broken. What you want is a 9mm that eats whatever ammo you feed it, hits where the sights sit and leaves you enough money for a holster, a box of hollow points and a training class.

Good news. That gun exists in 2026, and there are more of them than ever. The best budget handguns on this list were all shot by GunsAmerica Digest reviewers, and the reliability notes are boring in the best way. Mitchell Graf put a couple hundred rounds through a Stoeger STR-9F without a single malfunction and never oiled it. True Pearce went no jams, no misfeeds and no failures to eject with a Taurus GX2 that sells for about $250. Jordan Michaels tried everything short of throwing a Ruger EC9s in a swamp to make it jam. It would not.

We also cut two pistols our reviewers liked, the SCCY DVG-1 and the TriStar C100, because neither one is in production anymore. A great deal on a discontinued gun is a parts problem waiting to happen. Every price below is labeled as the maker’s current number or the price at the time of the review.

Table of contents

Buyer’s Guide: How to Choose a Budget Handgun in 2026

Reliability Is the Whole Point

Pick 9mm

Size: Carry, House or Both

Triggers and Sights

Spend the Savings on the Stuff That Matters

The 6 Best Budget Handguns of 2026

Stoeger STR-9F: Best Overall (2026)

Taurus GX2: Best Budget Carry Gun (2026)

Taurus G3c: Best Compact for the Money (2026)

Ruger EC9s: Best Budget Pocket Pistol (2026)

SAR9: Best Full-Size Under $500 (2026)

FMK 9C1 G2: Best Glock-Style Budget Pistol (2026)

The Bottom Line on Budget Handguns

Buyer’s Guide: How to Choose a Budget Handgun in 2026

Reliability Is the Whole Point

A budget handgun that jams is not a bargain. Before you buy, run at least 200 rounds of the practice ammo you plan to shoot, then a few magazines of the defensive load you plan to carry. Every gun on this list ran clean in our testing, which is why these six made it and plenty of other cheap pistols did not. That does not excuse you from testing yours. Mass-produced guns can still have a bad day, and you want to find out at the range, not in a parking lot.

Pick 9mm

There are cheaper cartridges, but 9mm is the sweet spot for cost, recoil and capacity. Practice ammo is easy to find, defensive loads are excellent, and every pistol here is chambered for it. If recoil is a concern, a full-size gun like the Stoeger or SAR9 is easier to shoot than a tiny carry pistol. That matters more than people think. The best budget handguns for beginners are the ones they will actually practice with, and nobody practices much with a gun that stings their hand every time.

Size: Carry, House or Both

Full-size guns are easier to shoot well and hold more rounds. Compacts and slim single stacks are easier to hide. The Ruger EC9s weighs 17.2 ounces and is 0.90 inches wide, which makes it easy to carry and less fun to shoot a lot. The Stoeger STR-9F weighs 25.9 ounces with 17 rounds. If this is your only gun, a compact like the Taurus G3c or GX2 is a good middle ground for carry and the nightstand.

Triggers and Sights

Budget triggers are where corners get cut. Expect pulls from about 5 pounds on the Stoeger to 8 pounds on the Ruger, with more take-up and creep than an expensive gun. Sights are usually plain three-dot or white-dot designs, and that is fine for learning. The GX2’s steel sights accept common aftermarket upgrades, which is worth a lot. If you want night sights or a red dot later, check what the slide will accept before you buy.

Spend the Savings on the Stuff That Matters

The real advantage of a budget handgun is what you can buy with the money you saved: a quality holster, a good light, spare magazines, defensive ammo and a training class. A $300 pistol with a good holster and 1,000 rounds of practice will serve you better than a $1,200 pistol in a sock drawer. Mitchell Graf ran a couple hundred rounds of Blazer Brass through the full-size STR-9F with zero malfunctions, never added oil, and said it far exceeded his expectations for the money. Shooting offhand at 10 yards, his best four-shot cluster measured 0.9 inches with Blazer 124-grain FMJ. He blamed himself, not the gun, for anything wider.

Read our full Stoeger STR-9F review here.

It is a 17-round, 4.68-inch-barrel pistol that feels like any other big-name full-size, with a flat-faced trigger of roughly 5 pounds and standard three-dot sights. Mitchell’s takeaway was that it gives you largely the same performance as the big names while undercutting them by a lot. Stoeger lists the standard STR-9F at $329. Our only knock is the plain sights, which are fine for learning and less fine at night.

Key Specs

Caliber: 9mm

Capacity: 17+1 (10-round magazines also offered)

Weight: 25.9 oz with empty magazine

Length/Barrel: 7.95 in overall; 4.68 in barrel

Action: Striker-fired, flat-faced trigger, about 5 lb

Sights: Three-dot

MSRP: $329 (Stoeger list price)

Pros

Zero malfunctions in a couple hundred rounds, unlubricated, in our test

0.9-inch best cluster offhand at 10 yards

17-round capacity

Flat trigger around 5 pounds

Big-name feel for far less money

Cons

Plain three-dot sights

Full size is a lot to carry concealed

Long-term round counts not yet tested by our reviewer

🛒 Check Current Price for Stoeger STR-9F on GunsAmerica

Taurus GX2: Best Budget Carry Gun (2026)

The GX2 is the gun that makes you double-check the price tag. The steel sights accept aftermarket fiber-optic or night sights, which most guns at this price cannot claim. The trigger has a hinged safety blade and a crisp, predictable break. His one gripe: with a high, tight grip, his support hand bumped the magazine release and partly dislodged the magazine a few times. Shooters with big hands should check that before buying. MSRP was $484 at the time of the review; SAR USA now lists the SAR9 Gen3 at $499.99, so it sits at the top of the budget range.

Key Specs

Caliber: 9mm

Capacity: 17+1 (two magazines included)

Weight: 27 oz

Length/Barrel: 4.4 in barrel

Action: Striker-fired, 3 lb 10 oz trigger as tested

Grip: Three interchangeable backstraps and grips

MSRP: $484 (2021 review); SAR9 Gen3 lists at $499.99

Pros

Best trigger on this list at 3 pounds 10 ounces in our test

.65-inch five-shot group at 7 yards

17-round capacity

Adjustable grip fit

Cons

Most expensive pick here

Manual safety on our test gun was stiff

Our review covers the original SAR9, not the Gen3

🛒 Check Current Price for SAR9 on GunsAmerica

FMK 9C1 G2: Best Glock-Style Budget Pistol (2026)

Justin Opinion went into this one with a hard rule: no gun gets a pass for malfunctions just because it is cheap. The FMK did not need a pass. No jams, no failures to feed or eject, and offhand at 7 to 8 yards every group could be covered with his fist. From a rest at 15 yards, no best three-shot group came close to 2 inches, and SIG Sauer 124-grain V-Crown shot best by a wide margin.

Read our full FMK 9C1 G2 review here.

If you have ever handled a Glock, the slide-lock takedown, fire control layout and trigger safety will feel familiar. Justin’s complaints were specific. The magazine well has almost no bevel, which makes speed reloads hard under stress, and the recoil spring felt weak enough that the slide only barely returned to battery a few times, so he would install a stronger one. It was around $400 when he reviewed it, and he gave it a strong recommendation. FMK still lists the 9C1 G2, but it is the oldest design here, so check stock and parts support before you buy.

Key Specs

Caliber: 9mm

Action: Striker-fired, Glock-style takedown and trigger safety

Sights: Non-night sights included

MSRP: About $400 (2017 review)

Pros

No malfunctions in our test

Familiar Glock-style manual of arms

Fist-size groups offhand with every load tried

Strong recommendation from our reviewer

Cons

Magazine well has almost no bevel

Recoil spring felt weak in our test

Oldest design and smallest company on this list

🛒 Check Current Price for FMK 9C1 G2 on GunsAmerica

The Bottom Line on Budget Handguns

Buy the Stoeger STR-9F if you want one budget handgun for the house, the range and occasional carry. It ran clean, shot well and lists at $329.

Carry is a different job. The Taurus GX2 gives you 13 rounds in a light package for about $250 if the magazine release suits your grip, and the Taurus G3c is still a proven compact with three magazines in the box. The Ruger EC9s is the pocket pick, with a trigger you will need to practice with. The SAR9 has the best trigger of the bunch, as long as you can stretch the budget to around $500. The FMK 9C1 G2 works, but check parts support first.

Then spend what you saved on a real holster, spare magazines, quality defensive ammo and training. That is how the best budget handguns end up working as well as expensive ones.
