The Velotric Nomad 2X caught my attention because it gives you many of the features I actually want for hunting, plus a few things the more expensive bikes don&#8217;t have, for considerably less money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I&#8217;ve been riding the Nomad 2X off-road through sagebrush, rocks, gravel roads and steep country. Power comes from a removable 48V 16.7Ah battery with 801.6Wh of capacity. Velotric rates pedal-assist range at up to 75 miles and throttle range at up to 50 miles under favorable conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I wouldn&#8217;t plan a backcountry hunt around getting 75 miles. Cold weather, hills, a heavy rider, hunting gear, soft ground and frequent throttle use are all going to cut into that number.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For me, even 25 or 30 real hunting miles would be a lot. It has an adjustable 120mm air fork and 80mm of rear wheel travel. I&#8217;m a big guy, and it climbed without much drama. You can help it with the pedals when needed, which makes a substantial difference on steep terrain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The drivetrain is an eight-speed Shimano setup with an 11-40T cassette. Because this is a hub motor rather than a mid-drive, changing bicycle gears doesn&#8217;t mechanically gear down the motor. That&#8217;s one advantage some expensive mid-drive hunting bikes have. The included MIK HD rear rack is rated for 120 pounds, and Velotric even claims a maximum towing capacity of 1,000 pounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I haven&#8217;t attempted to tow 1,000 pounds, and I wouldn&#8217;t confuse a manufacturer&#8217;s tow rating with what I&#8217;d want to drag down a steep mountain trail. Being able to move several miles down a dirt road without headlights, taillights, engine noise, or the sound of a truck can open up some interesting possibilities. A friend and I once spotted a good bull at daylight after a brutal night riding horses. Instead of starting the truck and potentially blowing the elk out, he used an e-bike to silently cover a couple miles around the ridge, dumped the bike and completed the stalk on foot. I already plan to carry mine when pulling horses into unfamiliar country because I can unload the bike and scout a questionable mountain road without unhooking the trailer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It also gives me another way out if the truck breaks down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That same capability makes sense for earthquakes, wildfires, floods, major power outages or other situations where roads are blocked or fuel becomes difficult to obtain. Keep the battery charged and you have quiet transportation capable of carrying a substantial amount of food, water or emergency equipment. It also lets you choose between torque and cadence sensing and provides three riding modes with five assist levels each.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just remember that changing the settings doesn&#8217;t automatically make the bike legal on every trail. Federal, state and local land managers can have their own e-bike rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Braking comes from Tektro hydraulic discs with a 203mm rotor in front and 180mm in the rear. They have worked well for me, although one other reviewer correctly pointed out that an 80-pound bike carrying a heavy rider and cargo creates a lot of mass to stop. It&#8217;s an 80-pound, full-suspension fat-tire utility bike with a big battery, a substantial payload rating and enough power to move a large rider through rough country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s exactly why I like it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For around the mid-$2,000 range, I&#8217;m getting full suspension, fat tires, a 120-pound rack, integrated lights, turn signals, Stealth Mode, a 750-watt motor and enough range for the way I actually hunt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I&#8217;ll be using mine this fall for scouting, accessing glassing locations, predator hunting and as backup transportation when I&#8217;m hauling horses.
