{"id":25762,"date":"2014-10-06T12:49:36","date_gmt":"2014-10-06T16:49:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/blog\/?p=25762"},"modified":"2014-10-06T12:49:36","modified_gmt":"2023-08-18T02:50:29","slug":"everytown-gun-safety-fact-checks-nra-video","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/everytown-gun-safety-fact-checks-nra-video\/","title":{"rendered":"Everytown For Gun Safety fact checks NRA video"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Everytown for Gun Safey, the pro-gun control organization funded by former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg, sent GunsAmerica a fact check on a video, entitled &#8220;Vote No On I-594,&#8221; recently released by the National Rifle Association.<\/p>\n<p>GunsAmerica published the NRA video on Friday. For those unfamiliar with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.voteno594.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"everytown-gun-safety-fact-checks-nra-video\" title=\"Everytown For Gun Safety fact checks NRA video\">Initiative 594<\/a> in Washington State, it is a universal background check mandate that is up for a vote come November. If passed, I-594 would require background checks on pretty much all private transfers and sales with some exceptions: immediate family members, and temporary transfers at a shooting range or while hunting.<\/p>\n<p>While I-594 has the support of the gun-control advocates, a competing measure known as<a href=\"https:\/\/wagunrights.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"everytown-gun-safety-fact-checks-nra-video\" title=\"Everytown For Gun Safety fact checks NRA video\"> I-591<\/a> has the backing of gun-rights organizations, specifically the Second Amendment Foundation and the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms. I-591 would protect against gun confiscation, universal gun registration and would not allow the state to pass a background check law that is tougher than the federal standard.<\/p>\n<p>In the interest of being fair and balanced, Everytown&#8217;s fact check of the NRA is presented below. \u00a0As journalists, we believe in representing both sides of the debate. \u00a0That said, as gun owners and patriots we also believe in being transparent about our positions on certain policies. \u00a0Needless to say, if we were residents of Washington State we&#8217;d be voting &#8220;NO on 594&#8221; and &#8220;YES on 591.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>How would you vote?<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>FACT-CHECK:\u00a0\u201cVOTE NO ON I-594\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>In\u00a0Washington\u00a0State\u00a0this November, citizens\u00a0will vote directly\u00a0on\u00a0ballot initiative I-594,\u00a0public safety legislationthat will\u00a0require background checks for all gun sales andhelp\u00a0keep\u00a0criminals in\u00a0the\u00a0state from obtaining firearms. The NRA is fighting\u00a0tooth-and-nail\u00a0to stop\u00a0the initiativefrom passing. In a video released on October 2, 2014 entitled \u201cVote No on I-594,\u201d\u00a0they\u00a0make a string of false claims about gun commerce and gun laws in Washington State.\u00a0Misleading statements\u00a0from\u00a0the video are\u00a0examinedbelow.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>NRA\u00a0CLAIM:<\/strong> In Washington State, guns\u00a0are not\u00a0being transferred in unlicensed \u201cprivate\u201d sales without background checks.<\/em><br \/>\n<em> \u201cYou can\u2019t buy a gun on\u00a0GunBroker\u00a0and ship it across state lines without it touching a dealer. And therefore the background checks are already being done.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>FACT:<\/strong>\u00a0Tens of thousands of guns are transferred each year in Washington State without background checks, including at gun shows and online.\u00a0Current law does not require background checks\u00a0for\u00a0any unlicensed gun sales\u00a0in the state.<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Dozens of websites\u2014like Armslist.com, the self-described Craigslist for guns\u2014each host tens of thousands of ads for unlicensed gun sales and provides a forum for strangers to connect and arrange offline gun transfers, just like Craigslist does for furniture sales and concert tickets.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>An Everytown investigation of online gun sales in Washington State showed that unlicensed sellers posted 16,739 gun ads over a twenty-week period on just five websites \u2014 a rate of more than 44,000 gun ads posted a year.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em><strong>NRA CLAIM:<\/strong> Background checks do not prevent criminals from obtaining guns.<\/em><br \/>\n<em> \u201cIf in fact we\u2019ve stopped 40,000 people in Washington, I\u2019d like to know where they\u2019re doing time. Cause they\u2019re not. So what good is it? It is a complete fallacy.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>FACT:\u00a0<\/strong>Each year in Washington State, background checks stop thousands of gun sales to criminals and other dangerous people.<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Since 1998, the background check system has stopped 2.2 million sales to prohibited people nationwideincluding more than 40,000 in Washington State.\u00a0Of those, more than 24,000 had been convicted of felonies and over 6,000 had been convicted of domestic violence crimes or were under restraining orders.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em><strong>NRA CLAIM:\u00a0<\/strong>Requiring background checks for private sales will not reduce crime or prevent gun violence.<\/em><br \/>\n<em> \u201cI don\u2019t believe that 594 will reduce violent crime by even a half of 1 percent. The day of the Columbine attack, I was having lunch with a student. [\u2026] And remember, those weapons were obtained illegally.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong> FACT:<\/strong>\u00a0Requiring background checks for all gun sales is the most effective measure states\u00a0can take to prevent gun violence and save lives.<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>In states that require background checks for all handgun sales, 38\u00a0percent\u00a0fewer women are shot to death by intimate partners,\u00a039\u00a0percent\u00a0fewer law enforcement officers are killed with handguns,\u00a0and there is 48percent\u00a0less gun trafficking.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>The guns used to perpetrate the April 20, 1999 shooting at Columbine High School were purchased in private, unlicensed sales without background checks.\u00a0In\u00a0a referendum in\u00a0the wake of the shooting, the citizens of Colorado\u00a0approved by\u00a070\u00a0percent\u00a0to\u00a030\u00a0percent\u00a0a measure to\u00a0require background checks on all sales at gun shows, and in 2013 the state\u00a0further\u00a0strengthened the law to require them for all unlicensed sales, including online.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Missouri\u00a0once required people to pass a background check and obtain a purchase permit before buying a handgun, but when it eliminated this requirement in 2007, the percentage of likely trafficked guns doubled and criminals became increasingly reliant on guns purchased inside the state.\u00a0Subsequent peer-reviewed research shows that, controlling for other factors, the change was associated with a 23\u00a0percent\u00a0increase in firearm homicides, or an additional 55-63 homicide deaths in Missouri per year.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em><strong>NRA CLAIM:<\/strong>\u00a0Background checks are a burden on unnecessary burden on law-abiding citizens.<\/em><br \/>\n<em> \u201cYou\u2019re only hurting a law-abiding citizen.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>FACT:<\/strong>\u00a0Finding a gun dealer to conduct a check is quick and easy, and the vast majority of gun owners agree that selling a gun responsibly means\u00a0firstconducting a background check on the buyer.<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>There are 1,103 federally licensed gun dealers in Washington State\u2014twice the number of post offices and nearly 4 times the number of McDonald\u2019s. All told, 98 percent of Washington residents live within 10 miles of one of them.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>In a survey conducted by Republican pollster FrankLuntz, 82\u00a0percent\u00a0of gun owners supported requiring background checks for all gun sales.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"attachment_18091\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/bloomberg1.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"everytown-gun-safety-fact-checks-nra-video\" title=\"Everytown For Gun Safety fact checks NRA video\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-18091\" title=\"Everytown For Gun Safety fact checks NRA video\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-18091\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/bloomberg1-400x300.jpg\" alt=\"Former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg and ardent pro-gun control supporter. (Photo: AP)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><em><strong>NRA CLAIM:<\/strong>\u00a0I-594 will interfere with temporary transfers between hunting buddies.<\/em><br \/>\n<em> \u201cYou can\u2019t lend a gun to a friend to go hunting. You can\u2019t even shoot like trap shoot and let your buddy shoot your gun if they pass this law.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>FACT:<\/strong>\u00a0I-594 exempts from the background checks requirement for temporary transfers while hunting or while at a shooting range.<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>When pressed by the Seattle Times, opponents of I-594 were unable to cite a single\u00a0instance \u201cwhere an otherwise-law-abiding citizen in another state had been prosecuted on a technicality of gun-transfer laws.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em><strong>NRA CLAIM:<\/strong>\u00a0I-594 will prevent families from passing down firearms from generation to generation.<\/em><br \/>\n<em> \u201cUnder 594, it would become illegal for my dad to pass our family guns, which have been in the family for 50, 60, 70 years, down to me.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>FACT:<\/strong> I-594 exempts from the background checks requirement any transfers by inheritance, and there is an exception for gifts between family members.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>NRA Claim:<\/strong> I-594 violates Washington State residents\u2019 constitutional rights.<\/em><br \/>\n<em> \u201cThey\u2019re taking away our rights. [\u2026] \u00a0I-594 is just another attempt to erode the\u00a0Second\u00a0Amendment.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>FACT:<\/strong>\u00a0No federal court has ever found that background checks violate the\u00a0Second\u00a0Amendment.<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>The landmark Heller opinion explicitly states that \u201claws imposing conditions and qualifications on the commercial sale of arms\u201d are lawful under the Second Amendment.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>In\u00a02014 in Colorado,\u00a0the United States District Court upheld the 2013 law requiring background checks for gun sales in that state.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em><strong>NRA CLAIM:<\/strong>\u00a0I-594 is a backdoor to universal firearm registration and confiscation.<\/em><br \/>\n<em> \u201c594\u00a0is\u00a0really universal gun registration. There\u2019s really no question in my mind that the goal is collecting a database on gun owners.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>FACT:<\/strong>\u00a0Under I-594, Washington State Police will not collect any information related to possession of firearms. Private gun sales will be subject to the same reporting already required sales by gun dealer.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>NRA CLAIM:<\/strong>\u00a0Opposition to I-594 is bipartisan and broad-based.<\/em><br \/>\n<em> \u201cWe actually have a really solid grassroots effort and we\u2019re actually finding that it spans the full political spectrum.\u201d<\/em><br \/>\n<em> \u201cThis is not just a Republican, by the way. There are some Democrats that are also not supportive of 594.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>FACT:<\/strong>\u00a0Background checks are nearly universally popular<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Eight out of 10 Washington residents\u2014as well as 74 percent of NRA members\u00a0and 55 percent of licensed gun dealers\u2014support requiring criminal background checks for all gun sales.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em><strong>NRA CLAIM:\u00a0<\/strong>Former Mayor Bloomberg has never supported policies that reduced crime.<\/em><br \/>\n<em> \u201cNothing Bloomberg has done anywhere in the country has stopped crime.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong> FACT:\u00a0<\/strong>While Mike Bloomberg was mayor of New York City,\u00a0strong laws requiring background checks for all sales \u2014\u00a0along with pro-active policing and tough sentencing guidelines for illegal gun possession \u2014\u00a0made it\u00a0more\u00a0difficult for\u00a0criminals\u00a0to purchase and possess guns.\u00a0As a result, shootings, murders, and murders-by-gun reached record lows.<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>New York City has fewer major felony crimes per 100,000 residents than any of the\u00a0nation\u2019s top 25 largest cities.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>By\u00a0the end of\u00a02013 overall felony crime was down 32percent\u00a0compared to 2001, despite adding 300,000 more people to the city\u2019s population while Mike Bloomberg was mayor.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Murder and shootings both fell to record\u00a0lows in 2013.
