For most people who carry concealed every day, an IWB holster worn at appendix or strong-side hip is the best starting point, and OWB is the most comfortable and fastest when you can wear a longer cover garment. Whatever type you choose, a good holster covers the trigger guard completely, holds the gun securely, stays put on your body and lets you get a full firing grip. Conceals well and is comfortable for many people when sitting.

Appendix IWB: inside the pants in front of the hip, around 1 o’clock. Fast and easy to protect in a crowd, and very concealable with the right holster.

OWB: outside the pants on the belt. The most comfortable and fastest draw, but it needs a longer cover garment to conceal.

Pocket: a small handgun in a pocket holster. Simple and discreet for small guns.

Ankle: usually for a backup gun. Slow to reach but very discreet.

Shoulder and chest: carry under a jacket or on a chest rig. Useful when seated or driving, or when wearing a pack or waders.

Off-body: bags, purses and specialty cases. Convenient, but the gun is only as available as the bag.

Inside the Waistband (IWB) Holsters

IWB holsters ride inside the pants with a clip or loops over the belt, so the shirt only has to cover the grip. Strong-side IWB, behind the hip at about 3 to 4 o’clock, is more comfortable for many people when sitting, and it is the classic concealed carry position.

Look for a holster molded to your exact pistol, a mouth that stays open after the draw so you can reholster with one hand, and a clip that holds the holster in place when you draw. Our Safariland IncogX review covers one holster that works from behind the hip to appendix. Our reviewer carried a Glock 48 MOS in it anywhere from 4 o’clock to 1 o’clock.

Appendix Carry (AIWB) Holsters

Appendix inside the waistband is the most popular carry position right now. It is fast, easy to protect in a crowd, and conceals a surprising amount of gun if the holster has a wing or claw that rotates the grip into your body. The Safariland Incog XS review covers a stripped-down appendix holster our reviewer ran with a Glock 19.

Appendix carry also has critics. The muzzle points toward the groin and femoral artery while holstered, so reholstering slowly and keeping clothing and fingers away from the trigger matter even more. Read five reasons to rethink appendix carry and our report on an appendix carry negligent discharge before you decide.

Outside the Waistband (OWB) Holsters

OWB holsters ride on the belt outside the pants. They are the most comfortable and fastest to draw from, and they are the standard for open carry, competition and range use. To conceal one, you need a cover garment long enough to cover the holster when you bend or reach.

Common OWB styles include belt slide and pancake holsters, which pull the gun tight to the body, and paddle holsters, which slip on and off without unthreading the belt. Our Vedder holster review covers OWB carry in summer, and our 1791 Gunleather review covers leather OWB options for revolvers and 1911s.

Pocket Holsters

A pocket holster keeps a small pistol upright in the pocket, covers the trigger and breaks up the outline of the gun. A loose gun in a pocket can print, flip sideways, collect lint or let a key or pen reach the trigger, so never pocket carry without a holster, and keep the pocket empty except for the holstered gun. See our best pocket holsters guide.

Ankle Holsters

Ankle holsters are a legitimate option, usually for a backup gun or a small revolver, despite how they look in movies. They are slow to reach when standing and work best when you are seated or driving. In our DeSantis Die Hard ankle holster review, our reviewer carried a SIG P238 in a rig that sold for $88.99 in 2018 and is worn on the inside of the off-side leg.

Shoulder, Chest and Belly Band Holsters

Shoulder holsters carry the gun under the arm with a harness, balanced by magazines on the other side. They work well when you are seated or driving and under a jacket, but they require a cover garment and care not to sweep people beside you on the draw.

Chest holsters put the gun high on the chest and are popular with hunters and hikers because they work with a pack hip belt or waders. Belly bands wrap around the waist and work with clothing that does not take a belt, but they offer less structure than a molded holster.

Off-Body and Specialty Holsters

Off-body carry means a gun in a purse, bag or case built for it. It works for people who cannot carry on the body, but the gun is only available when the bag is in reach, so the bag must stay under your control. Specialty holsters also exist for unusual setups, like pistols with suppressors, covered in our Hush Holsters review, and even AR-pattern rifles, covered in our AR holster review.

Holster Materials: Kydex, Leather and Hybrid

Holsters are generally made from Kydex or Boltaron, injection molded plastic, leather, fabric, or a mix. All can be good when made correctly.

Kydex and Boltaron hold their shape, click positively into place and keep the mouth open for one-handed reholstering.

Leather is quieter, more comfortable and looks better, but it needs break-in, and a good leather holster needs thick hide and a reinforced mouth so it does not collapse. It is standard for concealed carry.

Level 2 adds one active device the shooter must defeat, such as a thumb break, hood or button.

Level 3 and Level 4 add more devices and are common for uniformed police and duty carry.

If you open carry or work around other people, consider Level 2. Our interview on Safariland’s retention holsters walks through Level 1 to Level 4.

How to Choose a Holster

Decide where the gun will live and what you will be wearing. Carry position drives everything else.

Buy a holster molded for your exact pistol, including any optic or weapon light.

Make sure it covers the trigger guard completely and stays open for one-handed reholstering.

Get a real gun belt. A department store belt usually is not stiff enough to hold the gun and holster securely, even for many IWB holsters.

Consider ride height and cant. Some belt holsters tilt the muzzle rearward in what is often called the FBI cant, and many can be adjusted.

Train with it. Practice your draw and reholster with an unloaded gun before you carry.

Our guide to holster selection covers these points in more depth.

Holster Types FAQ

What is the most common type of holster for concealed carry?

Inside the waistband holsters, worn at appendix or strong-side hip, are the most common choice for daily concealed carry.

Is IWB or OWB better?

IWB conceals better under a shirt. OWB is more comfortable and faster to draw but needs a longer cover garment. Many people own both.

What does Level 2 retention mean?

A Level 2 holster has one active retention device, such as a thumb break, hood or button, in addition to passive retention. It is common for open carry.

Is Kydex or leather better?

Neither is always better. Kydex holds its shape and makes reholstering easier. Leather is quieter and more comfortable but needs break-in and a reinforced mouth.

Do I need a special belt for a holster?

Yes for any belt-mounted holster. A stiff gun belt keeps the holster and gun from sagging and shifting.

Related reading: see our guide to the best concealed carry handguns and our Glock 43X vs P365 vs Shield Plus comparison.

The main holster types are inside the waistband (IWB), appendix inside the waistband (AIWB), outside the waistband (OWB), pocket, ankle, shoulder, chest and off-body holsters.
