Buyer’s Guide: How To Choose The Best Benelli Guns In 2026

Benelli builds shotguns with three different operating systems and a rifle line, so start with the job and the action type.

Inertia, ARGO Or R.P.O.

Most Benelli field guns, like the Super Black Eagle 3, Ethos and M2, use the Inertia Driven system, which has few parts and stays clean but can kick harder because it does not bleed off gas. The M4 uses the ARGO gas system, with two short stroke pistons near the chamber. The new M2-G1 uses a Rear Piston Operated gas system designed to keep fouling out of the action. Our M4 EXT reviewer found it would not cycle ultra light 980 fps birdshot, and Benelli told our M2-G1 reviewer to use field loads of 1 1/8 ounce or heavier at a minimum of 1,200 fps in its semi-autos.

Tactical And Home Defense

The M4 EXT and M2-G1 are built for defense and hard use, with ghost ring sights or optics rails, 7+1 or similar capacity and oversized controls. The SuperNova Tactical is the budget pump option. For more choices, see our best home defense shotguns and best pump shotguns. Benelli also announced the lighter Nova 3 pump at SHOT Show 2025, which we covered as news, not a hands-on review.

Waterfowl And Upland

For ducks and geese, you want a 3.5 inch chamber, a corrosion resistant finish and big controls you can work with gloves. That is the Super Black Eagle 3 A.I. BE.S.T. For upland birds and clays, lighter guns like the Ethos and the 828U over-under carry easily but transmit more recoil.

Lupo Rifles: Hunter, Alpha Or HPR

The Lupo is Benelli’s bolt action. The standard Lupo is a soft shooting hunting rifle. The Lupo Alpha is a 5.73 pound special edition with a 3D printed stock. The Lupo HPR is a heavy precision rifle that our reviewer weighed at more than 10 pounds with optic and full magazine, a gun for the bench or a stand, not a long walk. Benelli says it tests every Lupo for sub-MOA accuracy.

BE.S.T. Finish

Many Benelli guns now come with the BE.S.T. surface treatment, which Benelli designs to resist rust and corrosion. Our SBE3 A.I. BE.S.T. and Lupo Alpha reviewers both praised it for wet, ugly hunts. It costs more, but if you hunt saltwater marshes or rain, it is worth a look.

Best Benelli Guns Ranked: 2026 Product Roundup

Benelli M4 EXT: Best Overall Benelli Gun (2026)

The Benelli M4 EXT is the best overall Benelli gun because it takes the proven M4 and adds what serious users kept installing themselves: a factory 7+1 tube, a five position collapsible stock and an oversized bolt release. Our reviewer ran capacity drills, ghost loaded it to nine and tested slugs and low recoil loads.

Read our full Benelli M4 EXT review here.

Dry out of the box, it stumbled on the very first ghost loaded round, which he said probably was not a fair test. After a few tubes it smoothed out and ran flawlessly with standard buckshot, slugs and birdshot. It would not cycle ultra light 980 fps birdshot. He wanted a rounder, larger charging handle and a bigger loading port. MSRP was $2,599 at the time of review in 2025. Our earlier M4 review logged more than 1,500 rounds in a classic M4.

Key Specs

- Action: semi-auto, ARGO gas system

- Chamber: 12 gauge, 2 3/4 and 3 in

- Capacity: 7+1 (ghost load to 9)

- Barrel: 18.5 in

- Sights: ghost ring rear, Picatinny rail

- Stock: 5 position telescoping

- Weight: 8.4 lb average

- Price: $2,599 MSRP at the time of review (2025)

Pros

- Factory 7+1 tube

- Proven ARGO system

- Collapsible stock

- Bigger bolt release

Cons

- Will not cycle ultra light 980 fps loads

- Charging handle could be bigger

- Heavy at 8.4 lb

Benelli M2-G1: Best Benelli Gas Gun For Speed (2026)

The Benelli M2-G1 is the best Benelli gas gun for speed because its new Rear Piston Operated gas system gave our reviewer a flat recoil impulse and split times as low as 0.10 seconds, averaging about 0.13. His fastest eight round string emptied the gun in 1.02 seconds.

Read our full Benelli M2-G1 review here.

He fed it cheap birdshot, rusty water damaged shells and suppressed strings with a JK Armament 195 SGX, and it did not malfunction in several hundred rounds. He praised the oversized controls, steel QD sockets and a trigger guard shaped to guide shells into the tube. His complaints were a steep pistol grip angle, a collapsible stock that changes cheek weld between positions and a modified choke from the factory, since Benelli recommends cylinder or improved cylinder for slugs. Our review did not list a price.

Key Specs

- Gauge: 12

- Action: Rear Piston Operated (R.P.O.) gas system

- Choke: flush fit modified Mobil choke

- Break in: 50 rounds of high brass field loads recommended

- Tested with: Vortex Crossfire II Solar red dot, JK Armament 195 SGX suppressor

Pros

- Zero malfunctions in several hundred rounds

- Ran rusty, water damaged ammo

- 0.10 second splits

- Steel QD sockets

Cons

- Steep pistol grip angle

- Cheek weld changes with stock position

- Ships with a modified choke

Benelli Super Black Eagle 3 A.I. BE.S.T.: Best Benelli Waterfowl Gun (2026)

The Benelli Super Black Eagle 3 A.I. BE.S.T. is the best Benelli waterfowl gun because it combines a 3.5 inch chamber, a corrosion resistant BE.S.T. finish and the Advanced Impact barrel system for tight patterns. At 20 yards with a 3.5 inch #2 load and full choke, our reviewer put roughly 70 percent of pellets inside an 8.5 inch circle.

Read our full Benelli SBE3 A.I. BE.S.T. review here.

It cycled flawlessly from target loads to slugs, and he praised the oversized bolt catch and a loading port that never pinched his fingers. ComforTech 3 helps, but 3.5 inch loads still have snap, and he found the carbon rib had a bit of play and felt somewhat fragile. The spec table listed a $3,199 MSRP, while his verdict put it in the $2,800 to $3,100 range at the time of review in 2026. Our 2017 SBE3 review ran more than 1,100 shells without a cleaning or a single jam.

Key Specs

- Gauge: 12, 2 3/4, 3 and 3 1/2 in

- Barrel: 28 in

- Overall length: 50 in

- Weight: 7 lb

- Capacity: 3+1

- Chokes: five extended A.I. Crio

- Price: $3,199 MSRP per spec table at the time of review (2026)

Pros

- Tight Advanced Impact patterns

- Corrosion resistant finish

- Cycled target loads to slugs

- Big controls for gloves

Cons

- Expensive

- 3.5 inch loads still kick

- Carbon rib feels fragile

Benelli Ethos: Best Benelli Upland Gun (2026)

The Benelli Ethos is the best Benelli upland gun because its Inertia Driven action keeps a 12 gauge at about 6 1/2 pounds with a slim forend that handles like a 20. Our reviewer said it balances like a custom clays gun and brings custom grade features within reach of working class sportsmen.

Read our full Benelli Ethos review here.

He tested it with 7/8 ounce game loads, 1 ounce target loads and 3 inch Winchester Blind Side waterfowl loads. The Ethos came in seven variations, including 20 and 28 gauge models. MSRP was $2,199 with the engraved nickel receiver and $1,999 with the anodized receiver at the time of review in 2016, so check current models.

Key Specs

- Action: Inertia Driven

- Gauge: 12 (20 and 28 also offered)

- Chamber: 3 in

- Barrels: 26 or 28 in

- Price: $2,199 nickel, $1,999 anodized MSRP at the time of review (2016)

Pros

- Light for a 12 gauge

- Slim, comfortable forend

- Custom grade finish

- Several gauges

Cons

- Light guns kick more

Benelli 828U: Best Benelli Over-Under (2026)

The Benelli 828U is the best Benelli over-under because it is a light field gun, about 6.5 pounds with 26 inch barrels, with a recoil system built into the stock and 40 possible drop and cast adjustments from included shims. Our reviewer called it a great field gun, meant to be carried on upland hunts.

Read our full Benelli 828U review here.

He tested it with Federal and Winchester loads from 7/8 to 1 1/8 ounce and noted that, physics being physics, a light gun means you feel more recoil. Trigger group removal was easy if you follow the instructions. The nickel gun retailed for $2,999 and the black anodized gun for $2,499 at the time of review in 2015. For more over-unders, see our best over-under shotguns.

Key Specs

- Type: over-under, 12 gauge

- Barrels: 26 or 28 in

- Weight: about 6.5 lb (26 in), 6.6 lb (28 in)

- Fit: five drop and four cast shims, 40 combinations

- Price: $2,999 nickel, $2,499 anodized at the time of review (2015)

Pros

- Light to carry

- Adjustable drop and cast

- Built in recoil system

- Removable trigger group

Benelli SuperNova Tactical: Best Budget Benelli Shotgun (2026)

The Benelli SuperNova Tactical is the best budget Benelli shotgun because it gives you a rugged pump with a rotating bolt and a pistol grip stock for an MSRP starting at $499 at the time of review in 2016. Our reviewer said the action was smoother out of the box than most similarly priced pumps.

Read our full Benelli SuperNova Tactical review here.

He had no malfunctions that were not shooter induced, and it even ran short Aguila MiniShells as long as he worked the pump at speed. His only real complaint was the plug that limits the tube to three shells, and he said his first call would be for an extended tube. This is an older review, and Benelli has since announced the Nova 3, so check what is current.

Key Specs

- Action: pump, rotating bolt

- Gauge: 12

- Stock: pistol grip, recessed sling mounts

- Price: from $499 MSRP at the time of review (2016)

The Benelli Lupo Alpha is the best lightweight Benelli rifle because it weighs just 5.73 pounds and still shot like a target rifle for our reviewer. His .308 Win test rifle printed 0.41 inch average groups and a 0.38 inch best group with Nosler 150 grain Ballistic Tips, and three of five loads averaged under MOA in 5 to 13 mph wind.

Read our full Benelli Lupo Alpha review here.

It ran flawlessly, with an excellent trigger, a slick 60 degree bolt throw, a threaded barrel and the BE.S.T. finish. The 3D printed stock with a dozen sculpted holes will split opinions, and he found the detachable magazine a bit sticky. MSRP was $3,199 at the time of review in 2026. He noted that Benelli told him there is no long term production cap, only an annual limit set by the stock printing machines.

Key Specs

- Caliber: .308 Win (300 Win Mag also offered)

- Barrel: 20 in, threaded 3/4×24, radial brake

- Weight: 5.73 lb

- Price: $3,199 MSRP at the time of review (2026)

Pros

- Very light

- 0.41 inch average groups with one load

- Excellent trigger

- Suppressor ready

Cons

- Polarizing styling

Benelli Lupo HPR: Best Benelli Precision Rifle (2026)

The Benelli Lupo HPR is the best Benelli precision rifle because our reviewer called it one of the most accurate factory rifles he has ever tested. In .308 Win he shot a three round group at 100 yards that he could cover with a nickel, in under five seconds, and he shot it prone, kneeling, off hand and off a bench.

Read our full Benelli Lupo HPR review here.

It has a free floating, fluted Crio barrel with a muzzle brake, a one piece 30 MOA rail, an adjustable trigger and a detachable double stack magazine. On a media hunt in western Oklahoma he dropped a buck at 276 yards. The catch is weight: more than 10 pounds with optic and full magazine, so it is a bench and stand rifle, not one to carry far. Our review did not list a price.

Key Specs

- Caliber tested: .308 Win (6.5 Creedmoor, 6.5 PRC, .300 Win Mag, .300 PRC, .338 Lapua Mag offered)

- Barrel: free floating, fluted Crio with brake

- Rail: one piece 30 MOA Picatinny

- Magazine: detachable double stack

- Weight: over 10 lb with optic and full magazine

Pros

- Exceptional accuracy

- Minimal recoil

- Adjustable fit

- Many long range calibers

Cons

- Over 10 lb as tested

Benelli Lupo: Best Value Benelli Hunting Rifle (2026)

The standard Benelli Lupo is the best value Benelli hunting rifle because it is the softest recoiling .30-06 our reviewer had ever shot and it was sub-MOA for three shots at 100 yards with a variety of ammunition. Suggested retail was $1,699 at the time of review in 2022, about half the price of the Alpha.

Read our full Benelli Lupo .30-06 review here.

He zeroed it with a Maven RS.5 at 50 yards in about a half dozen rounds. He noticed a pattern: the first three shots would land under MOA, and the next two would open the group by about an inch, such as 0.70 inch for three Remington Premier shots growing to 1.4 inches with five. Lupo rifles are offered in a wide range of chamberings from .243 Win to .300 Win Mag.

Key Specs

- Caliber tested: .30-06 Springfield

- Accuracy: sub-MOA three shot groups at 100 yd

- Chamberings: .243 Win to .300 Win Mag, including 6.5 Creedmoor and 6.5 PRC

- Price: $1,699 suggested retail at the time of review (2022)

Pros

- Very soft recoil

- Sub-MOA three shot groups

- Many chamberings

- Half the price of the Alpha

BE.S.T. is the waterfowl gun, the Ethos and 828U are light upland guns, and the SuperNova Tactical is the budget pump. On the rifle side, the Lupo Alpha is the lightweight pick, the HPR is the precision pick and the standard Lupo is the value hunting rifle.

He had no malfunctions that were not shooter induced, and it even ran short Aguila MiniShells as long as he worked the pump at speed. Benelli Lupo Alpha: Best Lightweight Benelli Rifle (2026)

The standard Benelli Lupo is the best value Benelli hunting rifle because it is the softest recoiling .30-06 our reviewer had ever shot and it was sub-MOA for three shots at 100 yards with a variety of ammunition. He zeroed it with a Maven RS.5 at 50 yards in about a half dozen rounds.
