Buyer’s Guide: How To Choose The Best Smith & Wesson Pistols In 2026

Smith & Wesson makes a lot of versions of each pistol. Our M&P 2.0 10mm reviewer counted at least 18 versions of that pistol alone. These questions narrow it down.

Carry Or Full Size

For concealed carry, look at the Shield family. The Shield Plus holds 13+1 in a micro frame, and the Shield X adds a 3.6 inch barrel and a longer grip. For home defense, competition, or open carry, a full-size M&P M2.0 gives you more capacity, a longer sight radius, and softer recoil.

Polymer Or Metal

The M2.0 Metal and Spec Series use an aluminum frame that adds weight but soaks up recoil. Our M2.0 Metal weighed 30 ounces, about 4.2 ounces more than the polymer Compact. Polymer guns are lighter to carry all day and usually cost less.

Comped Or Not

S&W offers ported barrels and compensators on several models. The Carry Comp uses a ported barrel, the Spec Series wears a Faxon compensator, and the Performance Center 10mm has a ported barrel and slide. They cut muzzle rise, but our Carry Comp reviewer found the slide got hot during fast mag dumps.

Thumb Safety

Many M&P models come with or without a manual thumb safety. If you want one, check the model number before you buy. The Shield EZ we tested had a manual safety and a grip safety.

Caliber

Most shooters should start with 9mm. The M&P 2.0 10mm and Performance Center 10mm suit hunters and woods carry. Smith & Wesson also introduced the M&P 5.7 at SHOT Show 2023 at an MSRP of $699, but we have only covered it as launch news. See our best 5.7×28 pistols guide for that caliber.

Other S&W Options

The CSX is an alloy-framed, hammer-fired micro-compact that holds 10+1 or 12+1 and weighed 19.5 ounces with a magazine at launch. We covered it as launch news only, with a suggested retail price of $609 in 2022. If you want a pistol-caliber carbine, our M&P FPC review covers S&W’s folding 9mm, and our best 9mm carbines guide has more.

State Compliance

Several of our reviewers live in restricted states and tested 10-round versions. The M&P 2.0 10mm holds 15+1 in unrestricted states and 10+1 in compliant form, and the Shield X shipped with 10-round magazines instead of 13 and 15.

Best Smith & Wesson Pistols Ranked: 2026 Product Roundup

Smith & Wesson M&P9 M2.0 Carry Comp: Best Overall Smith & Wesson Pistol (2026)

The M2.0 Carry Comp is the best overall Smith & Wesson pistol because it combines a 15+1 capacity, an optic-ready slide, a light rail, and a ported barrel in a size you can carry. It comes with two 15-round magazines, four palmswell inserts, and optic plates. MSRP was $799 for the standard model and $999 for the metal-frame full-size version at the time of review.

Read our full M2.0 Carry Comp review here.

Our reviewer fired several hundred rounds with no malfunctions from 115 to 147 grain ammo, and it ran a USPSA match with stages near 30 rounds. Groups were around 2 inches at 10 yards with five loads, and he hit double taps in about 0.8 seconds. The trigger measured 4.5 pounds. During fast 15-round mag dumps the slide got very hot.

Smith & Wesson M&P Shield X: Best Smith & Wesson Pistol For Concealed Carry (2026)

The Shield X is the best Smith & Wesson pistol for concealed carry because it adds a 3.6 inch barrel and a longer grip to the Shield while staying thin. It holds 13+1 with a flush magazine, and unrestricted states also get an extended 15-round magazine. It weighs 20.8 ounces, is optic ready, and has a tritium front sight.

Read our full Shield X review here.

Our reviewer compared it with the Glock 43X and Shield Plus, and the Shield X had the best recoil of the three. It had one malfunction on the second round out of the box and none after that. His chronograph showed only a 30 to 50 fps loss compared with a 4 inch barrel, and the smooth panels on the grip made appendix carry comfortable.

Key Specs

- Caliber: 9mm

- Capacity: 13+1 (10 in restricted states)

Smith & Wesson Spec Series Metal M2.0: Best Premium Smith & Wesson Pistol (2026)

The Spec Series Metal M2.0 is the best premium Smith & Wesson pistol because it pairs an aluminum frame with a Faxon compensator on a 4.8 inch threaded barrel. The limited edition kit includes two 17-round and two 23-round magazines, suppressor-height tritium sights, a knife, and a challenge coin. MSRP was $999 at the time of review in 2024.

Read our full Spec Series Metal M2.0 review here.

Our reviewer tested seven carry loads at 10 yards, and about half the groups were close to half an inch. His best was slightly under half an inch with Norma 124 grain Safeguard. He had one malfunction in a few hundred rounds, with 65 grain Norma NXD, and the trigger measured 4.5 pounds.

Key Specs

- Caliber: 9mm

The Performance Center M&P10mm M2.0 is the best Smith & Wesson 10mm for hunting because its ported barrel and slide tame full-power loads. It holds 15+1, has an optic-ready slide, tritium night sights, and an external safety, and weighs 31.4 ounces. MSRP was $749 at the time of review in 2023.

Read our full Performance Center 10mm M2.0 review here.

Our reviewer said 180 grain loads at 1,275 fps felt like 115 grain 9mm from an uncompensated pistol. He shot sub-quarter-inch 10 yard groups with Hornady 135 grain MONOFLEX and 175 grain FlexLock, not counting one flyer, and hit reduced-size steel out to 100 yards. The trigger measured about 4.5 pounds.

The M&P 2.0 10mm is the best value Smith & Wesson 10mm because it gives you full-power 10mm in the familiar M&P frame for an MSRP of $699 at the time of review in 2026. It has a 4.6 inch barrel, the C.O.R.E. optic plate system, suppressor-height sights, and holds 15+1, or 10+1 in restricted states.

Read our full M&P 2.0 10mm review here.

Our reviewer said it is only 2.7 ounces heavier than the 9mm version and fits 9mm full-size M&P holsters. Range ammo was stout but very shootable, and he put four rounds in one hole at 7 yards while zeroing. He had one failure to feed with Magtech 180 grain JHP across eight loads, and suggests a .40 S&W might suit city carry better.

Key Specs

- Caliber: 10mm

The M&P9 M2.0 Compact Optics Ready is the best Smith & Wesson pistol for most shooters because it is big enough to shoot well and small enough to carry. It holds 15+1, weighs 25.8 ounces with a 4 inch barrel, and comes with optic plates, taller sights, and four palmswell inserts. MSRP was $659 at the time of review in 2023.

The M&P9 M2.0 Metal is the best metal-frame Smith & Wesson pistol because its aluminum frame adds a little weight to soak up recoil without changing the M&P feel. It holds 17+1, has a 4.25 inch barrel, a Tungsten Gray Cerakote slide, and weighs 30 ounces. It takes 17-round M2.0 magazines, but 15-round magazines will not work.

Read our full M&P9 M2.0 Metal review here.

Our reviewer had zero malfunctions in a few hundred rounds, with no stovepipes, failures to feed, or failures to lock back. The trigger measured about 5.2 pounds, and he shot groups near 1 inch standing at 10 yards. He liked the contoured cuts in the frame, which made the grip comfortable.

Smith & Wesson M&P9 Shield Plus: Best Micro Smith & Wesson Pistol (2026)

The Shield Plus is the best micro Smith & Wesson pistol because it holds 13+1 in the same size as the original Shield, which held five fewer rounds. Every model gets the higher capacity, with optional night sights and a thumb safety. MSRP was $553 for the base model and $869 for the Performance Center version at the time of review in 2021.

Read our full Shield Plus review here.

Our reviewer found a crisp, consistent 5 pound break after 0.3 inch of take-up, with an audible, tactile reset. Hits from 10 to 25 yards were easy, especially with the Performance Center’s Crimson Trace optic. That slide is cut only for the Crimson Trace, so other micro dots need an aftermarket plate.

Key Specs

- Caliber: 9mm

- Capacity: 13+1

- Trigger: 5 lb measured

Pros

- 13+1 in a micro frame

S&W offers ported barrels and compensators on several models. Caliber

Most shooters should start with 9mm. The M&P 2.0 10mm and Performance Center 10mm suit hunters and woods carry.

It holds 17+1, has a 4.25 inch barrel, a Tungsten Gray Cerakote slide, and weighs 30 ounces. It takes 17-round M2.0 magazines, but 15-round magazines will not work.
