Buyer’s Guide: How To Choose The Best FN Pistols In 2026

FN pistols fall into a few families. Start with size and caliber.

The 509 Family

The 509 is FN’s striker-fired 9mm, built from work on a U.S. Army pistol trial. It comes in full size, Midsize, Compact, and Edge versions, and most current models are optics ready with FN’s MRD system. The 509 CC Edge adds a compensator, and the 509 LS Edge adds a 5 inch barrel for duty and competition.

Reflex And 503 For Deep Carry

The Reflex is a hammer-fired micro-compact with 11 and 15 round magazines. The 503 is a slim single-stack 9mm at 1.1 inches wide. Our Reflex reviewer found it fully reliable, and the 503 had a few early issues that settled down after break-in. We also filmed a Reflex unboxing and first 100 rounds.

The Five-seveN

The Five-seveN fires 5.7×28 from 10 or 20 round magazines and weighs about 21 ounces without a magazine. It is light, flat shooting, and pricey. See our best 5.7×28 pistols guide to compare it with newer rivals.

.45 ACP Options

FN builds two high-capacity .45s. The 545 Tactical holds 18+1, and the hammer-fired FNX-45 Tactical holds 15 and is built to run a suppressor. Both are big pistols.

Triggers

Most FN triggers we measured landed near 5 pounds. The Reflex averaged right at 5 pounds, the 509 CC Edge and 509 LS Edge broke at 5 pounds, and the 509 Compact MRD at 5.5 pounds. The Five-seveN was the outlier at 6 pounds.

Price

In our reviews, prices ran from $549 for the 503 in 2022 to $1,569 for the 509 CC Edge in 2023. The Reflex listed at $599, or $659 with the MRD, as of our 2026 review. Several reviews are older, so check current listings.

Best FN Pistols Ranked: 2026 Product Roundup

FN 509 Compact MRD: Best Overall FN Pistol (2026)

The FN 509 Compact MRD is the best overall FN pistol because it puts the 509’s excellent trigger and optics-ready slide into a size you can carry every day. It ships with 12 and 15 round magazines, and FN’s 24-round magazine also fits. Our reviewer measured the trigger break at 5.5 pounds and liked that the whole trigger face is smooth instead of using a small center safety lever.

Read our full FN 509 Compact MRD review here.

He found the low bore axis tamed recoil and the extended rear of the frame prevented slide bite.

FN Reflex: Best FN Micro-Compact (2026)

The FN Reflex is the best FN micro-compact because it was 100 percent reliable through hundreds of rounds, clean, dirty, and gritty. It is a single action, internal hammer-fired 9mm with a 3.3 inch barrel, a 1 inch wide slide, and a weight of 18.4 ounces. It comes with 11 and 15 round magazines and tritium front sight. MSRP was $599, or $659 for the MRD, at the time of review.

Read our full FN Reflex review here.

FN advertises a 4.5 to 5.5 pound trigger, and our reviewer’s averaged right at 5 pounds. From a sandbag at 15 yards, his best five-round group measured 0.85 inch. The 15-round magazine gives a full grip. See our best micro-compact 9mm guide for its rivals.

Key Specs

- Caliber: 9mm

FN 509 CC Edge: Best Compensated FN Pistol (2026)

The FN 509 CC Edge is the best compensated FN pistol because it adds a compensator and optics-ready slide to a carry-size 509. It has a TiN-finished 4.2 inch hammer-forged, target-crowned barrel, is 7.5 inches long and 4.8 inches tall, and takes 12 or 15 round magazines. MSRP was $1,569 at the time of review in 2023, with street prices around $200 less.

Read our full FN 509 CC Edge review here.

Our reviewer measured a consistent 5 pound break with about 0.10 inch of creep and shot close to 1 inch groups at 10 yards with Norma ammo. The iron sights sit low enough to co-witness with an optic. He warned that a heavy optic plus the compensator can cause problems with light ball ammo.

Key Specs

- Caliber: 9mm

- Barrel: 4.2 in with compensator

- Capacity: 12 or 15 rounds

Pros

- Flat shooting

- About 1 inch groups at 10 yards

- Low co-witness irons

Cons

- Expensive

FN 509 LS Edge: Best FN For Duty And Competition (2026)

The FN 509 LS Edge is the best FN for duty and competition because its 5 inch barrel and long slide make it easy to shoot well at distance. It is 8.2 inches long, came with three 17-round magazines, and also takes FN’s 24-round magazines. The optic plate doubles as wings to protect the rear sight.

Read our full FN 509 LS Edge review here.

Our reviewer measured the trigger at 5 pounds and called it very nice. He ran 600 rounds over two days without an issue, cleaned failure-to-stop and box drills with A-zone hits, and hit an IPSC target at 50 yards with iron sights. It is a big gun that is tough to carry concealed.

Key Specs

- Caliber: 9mm

- Barrel: 5 in

- Length: 8.2 in

FN 509 Midsize MRD: Best FN For Home And Carry (2026)

The FN 509 Midsize MRD is the best FN for home and carry because it splits the difference between full size and compact and ran everything we fed it. It weighs 26.5 ounces, is 7.4 inches long and 5.2 inches tall, and shipped with two 15-round magazines and the optics mounting system.

It ships with three high-capacity magazines in a hard case. Our reviewer praised the interchangeable backstraps as the best system in the industry.

FN FNS-9 Longslide: Best Value Used FN (2026)

The FN FNS-9 Longslide is the best value used FN because it delivers competition-gun performance from a plain 5 inch striker-fired pistol. It has a cold hammer-forged stainless barrel, a captured flat wire recoil spring with a weighted extension for softer recoil, and our sample came with three 17-round magazines.
