Buyer’s Guide: How To Choose The Best Winchester Rifles In 2026

Winchester rifles fall into three groups. Start with the action you like.

Bolt Action, Lever Action, Or Rimfire

The Model 70 is Winchester’s premium bolt action with a controlled-round-feed claw extractor. The XPR and XPC are push-feed bolt guns built to a lower price. The Model 94 and 1886 are classic lever actions. The Wildcat is a semi-auto .22 LR.

Controlled Feed And The Pre-64 Legend

Pre-1964 Model 70s used a controlled-round-feed claw extractor, and collectors pay a lot for them. Our SHOT Show 2026 Model 70 coverage notes pre-64 rifles often sell for more than $4,000 as of 2026. Current Model 70s, including the Featherweight here, use a Mauser-style controlled feed action with a big claw extractor and a three-position safety.

Triggers

Winchester’s M.O.A. trigger shows up on the Model 70 and XPR. Our XPR broke at an even 3 pounds and our Model 70 in .338 Win. Mag. at 3 pounds 5 ounces. Our new Model 70 Featherweight arrived set at 5.9 pounds even though the system adjusts from 3 to 5 pounds, and our reviewer would turn it down before hunting.

Lever Guns And Optics

Older top-eject Model 94s are hard to scope. Angle Eject models accept optics, according to our Model 94 review. The 1886 is usually shot with iron sights. If you want to shoot an original, our Winchester 1873 old gun review shows what an antique can still do.

Price

Winchester spans a wide range. In our reviews, the Wildcat 22 listed at $269 in 2021, the XPR at $549.99 in 2017, the Model 70 .338 Win. Mag. at $1,049.99 in 2018, and the XPC at $1,599 in 2018. Check current listings, since most of these prices are several years old.

Best Winchester Rifles Ranked: 2026 Product Roundup

Winchester Model 70 Featherweight: Best Overall Winchester Rifle (2026)

He would adjust it to 3.5 to 4 pounds and take it to his tree stand.

Winchester Model 70 Featherweight: Best Overall Winchester Rifle (2026)

The Winchester Model 70 Sporter in .338 Win. Mag. is the best Winchester for big game because it pairs the pre-64 style claw extractor and fixed blade ejector with a cartridge that handles elk, moose, and bears. It has a 26 inch hammer-forged barrel and weighed 9 pounds unloaded with scope and mounts. MSRP was $1,049.99 at the time of review in 2018.

The trigger broke at 3 pounds 5 ounces with little creep, and it felt lighter thanks to the wide shoe. The thin barrel made recoil and muzzle jump stout from the bench. Our reviewer said a couple of loads were accurate enough for hunting and hit steel plates down to 6 inches at 200 and 300 yards. See our best bolt action hunting rifles guide for more.

The Winchester XPC is the best Winchester chassis rifle because almost every 100 yard group our reviewer shot with it was under an inch. Our test rifle was a 6.5 Creedmoor with a 20 inch barrel, a factory 20 MOA rail, a full-length Picatinny rail on the forend, and 5 and 10 round magazines. MSRP was $1,599 at the time of review in 2018.

Winchester’s spec sheet lists it at about 10 pounds and 44 inches long, and the length of pull is 13.75 inches. He shot it off a sleeping bag on a forest floor with Winchester’s 125 grain Deer Season XP and liked the fit and finish. The trigger felt like about 3.5 pounds.

The Turnbull-finished Winchester 1886 is the best Winchester for collectors and big bores because it combines an 1886 lever action in .45-70 with spectacular color casehardening and nicely grained walnut. It has a 26 inch blued barrel, a shotgun butt plate, and holds 8+1. It weighs 9 pounds 5.5 ounces.

The trigger averaged 5 pounds 2.5 ounces, which is fair for a lever gun. The hunter made consistent hits on a bison vital-zone steel target out to 350 yards with the ramp rear sight, had zero malfunctions, and took his buffalo with Black Hills 325 grain HoneyBadger. Turnbull refinishes recent production rifles to match original work.
