They are the ones you actually bring along: light, compact, simple, and able to feed you or protect you after something goes wrong. That idea goes back to World War II aircrew survival guns, and our writers have spent years testing modern versions of it, from the Henry AR-7 that stows inside its own stock to break-action combination guns that pair a rimfire barrel with a .410 shotgun barrel.

A survival rifle lives in a backpack, a boat, a plane, a truck, or a cabin closet. That means it has to break down or fold up, shrug off neglect, and use ammo you can carry by the hundreds. For most people, that points to .22 LR. A few picks below go further with shotgun barrels, caliber inserts, or pistol-caliber conversions, and we explain where those tradeoffs make sense.

We ranked these rifles on Digest testing first. Six picks have full GunsAmerica Digest reviews or hands-on articles, and we link every one. Where we only have launch coverage, we say so. 2026

Buyer’s Guide: How To Choose The Best Survival Rifles In 2026

Survival rifle is a loose term, and makers use it for everything from a budget rimfire to a pistol-caliber carbine. These are the factors that matter when the rifle has to work far from a gun counter.

Packability And Takedown Design

Overall length when stowed matters more than assembled length. The Henry AR-7 packs into a 16.5-inch stock, and the Tactical Solutions Owyhee breaks down to 19.25 inches. Look at how the rifle comes apart, whether parts can get lost, and whether it returns to zero. Ruger says its 10/22 Takedown returns to zero even with a receiver-mounted optic, and that is the standard to measure against.

Caliber And Ammo Weight

A brick of .22 LR weighs a fraction of the same number of centerfire rounds, and rimfire is enough for small game. Combination guns add a .410 shotgun barrel for birds and snakes. Pistol-caliber carbines like the TNW Aero use the same ammo and magazines as your handgun, which simplifies logistics but adds weight. Pick the cartridge for the game you expect to take and the ammo you can carry.

Weight

Every ounce counts in a pack. The rifles here run from about 3.5 pounds for the AR-7 to about 6 pounds for the Savage A22 Takedown and the Chiappa M6 without inserts. The Chiappa’s eight caliber inserts add 4.5 pounds on their own, which is the kind of number that should make you think twice before buying a do-everything kit.

Durability And Weather Resistance

A survival rifle gets dropped, rained on, and forgotten. Teflon-coated and stainless parts, synthetic stocks, and simple blowback or break actions are your friends. Our AR-7 reviewer noted the rifle ran reliably wet, dirty, or fouled, and the capped stock floats if it goes overboard.

Sights And Optics

Iron sights are a must. Our TNW reviewer insisted on irons for a true survival rifle because a cheap scope may not survive a crash or a fall. A rail for a small optic is a bonus. Fiber-optic fronts are fast but can be hard to use in bright sun, as our Owyhee reviewer found at 50 yards.

Legal Notes

Barrels shorter than 16 inches on a rifle, or 18 inches on a shotgun, fall under the National Firearms Act. Civilian versions of military survival guns use longer barrels to stay legal. Check state and local laws before carrying a long gun in a vehicle or on public land.

Best Survival Rifles Ranked: 2026 Product Roundup

Henry U.S. Survival Rifle AR-7: Best Overall (2026)

The Henry U.S. Survival Rifle AR-7 is the best survival rifle for most people because it does the one thing a survival rifle must do better than anything else: it disappears into a pack. The barrel unscrews from the receiver, the receiver unscrews from the stock, and the barrel, receiver, and two magazines store inside the stock. Capped, the stock floats. Packed, it is 16.5 inches long and weighs 3.5 pounds.

Read our full Henry U.S. Survival Rifle AR-7 review here.

Our reviewer went in thinking of it as a last-resort gun and came out impressed. Assembly takes seconds with nuts large enough to turn while wearing gloves, and there are no small parts to lose. The simple blowback action ran reliably even wet, dirty, or fouled. From 25 yards off-hand, his first five shots made nearly one ragged hole, and the rifle repeated that over and over. The weak points are a 7-pound trigger and a rocker safety that is easy to bump off, so check it every time. The price was $290 at the time of review.

Key Specs

Caliber: .22 LR

Capacity: 8-round magazines (two included)

Length: 16.5 in stowed, 35 in assembled

Weight: 3.5 lb

Action: Semi-automatic blowback

Finish: Teflon-coated receiver, coated steel barrel

Trigger: About 7 lb (as measured in our review)

Price: $290 at the time of review

Pros

Stores barrel, action, and two magazines in the stock

Floats when packed

Very light and inexpensive

Surprisingly accurate in our testing

Cons

Heavy 7-pound trigger

Rocker safety is easy to dislodge

Bulky stock feels swollen

🛒 Check Current Price for Henry U.S. Survival AR-7 on GunsAmerica

Tactical Solutions Owyhee: Best Premium Takedown (2026)

The Tactical Solutions Owyhee is the best premium survival rifle and the most accurate rifle on this list. The barrel and forend twist off with a takedown pin and store inside a modified Magpul X-22 Backpacker stock, and lifting the cheek piece reveals room for extra magazines or a 50-round box of ammo. Shooting off a bench at 50 yards with iron sights, his groups averaged around 2 inches, and his best group with CCI 45-grain Suppressor subsonic ammo measured 1.1 inches. The big catch is cost. MSRP was $1,065 at the time of review, about $400 more than a Ruger 10/22 Takedown with a Backpacker stock at the time.

Key Specs

Caliber: .22 LR

Action: Bolt action, takedown

Magazine: Ruger 10/22 type

Weight: 3.9 lb

Length: 34 in assembled, 19.25 in broken down

Barrel: 16.5 in chromoly, threaded 1/2×28, 1:16 twist

Trigger: 3 lb 6 oz (as measured in our review)

MSRP: $1,065 at the time of review

Pros

Best accuracy we recorded in this group

Excellent trigger

Threaded for a suppressor

Uses common 10/22 magazines

Cons

Expensive

Short length of pull for some shooters

Bright fiber optics can wash out in sun

🛒 Check Current Price for Tactical Solutions Owyhee on GunsAmerica

Ruger 10/22 Takedown: Best Semi-Auto Value (2026)

The Ruger 10/22 Takedown puts the most popular .22 rifle in America into a pack-friendly package. The foam-filled stock made a consistent cheek weld hard, double triggers slowed him down, and extracting spent cases from the inserts was awkward. The best 9mm insert group he could shoot at 25 yards was 4.1 inches. As of October 2026, Chiappa lists the M6 12 gauge/.22 LR at a $780 MSRP, or $1,180 with an eight-insert X-Caliber set. It is light, inexpensive, floats, and stores itself, and our reviewer found it far more accurate than its looks suggest. If you want precision and can pay for it, the Tactical Solutions Owyhee is the best rimfire takedown we have tested. The Ruger 10/22 Takedown is the dependable semi-auto value, the Savage 42 Takedown and Springfield M6 Scout give you a rifle and shotgun in one, the Savage A22 Takedown adds an adjustable trigger on a budget, the TNW Aero shares ammo with your pistol, and the Chiappa M6 offers the most ammo options.

Two honorable mentions are worth a look.
