Buyer’s Guide: How To Choose The Best AK-47 Rifles In 2026

Choosing the best AK-47 comes down to build quality first, then features. Here is what to check before you buy.

Trunnion, Barrel, And Headspace

The front trunnion is the heart of an AK. It holds the barrel and locks the bolt, and cast trunnions have a history of failing. Our reviewer covered how Riley Defense was put on blast for weak cast trunnions in early RAK-47s before switching to a forged trunnion, which seems to have fixed the headspace issue. Century’s VSKA machines its trunnion, bolt carrier, and feed ramp from S7 tool steel. Look for forged or machined trunnions and chrome-lined or nitrided barrels. Read our Riley Defense AK47 review for a real-world look at how a budget AK can improve and where it still falls short.

Stamped Versus Milled

Stamped receivers are lighter and are what most of the world’s AKs use. Milled receivers, like the Century C39v2 and IWI Galil ACE, are machined from solid steel, heavier, and very rigid. Neither is automatically better. A well-built stamped AK beats a sloppy milled one every day.

Check The Sights And Rivets

Our guide to AK problems calls canted sights a huge red flag, and the RAS47 reviewer said canted iron sights were the most prominent issue on older Romanian-built guns. Look down the barrel at the front sight block, check that the rear sight is centered, and inspect rivet heads for cracks or sloppy work.

American-Made Versus Imported

Federal 922(r) rules limit how many imported parts can go into a semi-auto rifle built here, and the supply of imported parts kits has been drying up, which raises prices. That is why American-made AKs from Century and PSA exist. Imports like the Zastava ZPAP remain excellent choices if you can find them.

Optics And Modern Furniture

Traditional AKs use a side-mount rail for optics. Modern rifles add top rails, M-LOK handguards, and AR-style stocks. A red dot on a low mount is the best match for the AK’s practical accuracy. Our Galil ACE and ZPAP reviewers both appreciated modern ergonomics, but do not let furniture distract you from the build quality underneath.

Caliber And Magazines

7.62×39 is the classic AK round, with cheap steel-case ammo and real authority on hogs and deer at moderate ranges. 5.45×39 rifles like the PSA AK-105 shoot flatter with less recoil. 5.56 AKs share ammo with your AR. Stick with quality steel or Magpul magazines, and see our AK magazine guide for proven options.

Best AK-47 Rifles Ranked: 2026 Product Roundup

Zastava M70 ZPAP: Best Overall AK-47 (2026)

Our reviewer called the ZPAP an AK for AR guys, and it is our top pick for most buyers. It has a cold hammer-forged, chrome-lined barrel, properly seated front sights, and the heavier bulged trunnion that reinforces the receiver. His rifle wore ergonomic furniture with a five-position stock and cheek riser, and newer models add QD mounts, M-LOK slots, and a top Picatinny rail.

Read our full Zastava ZPAP M70 review here.

It performed flawlessly without a single failure on Magpul polymer and South Korean surplus steel magazines, and he rang steel silhouettes and 8 inch gongs at 277 yards with irons. Street price was around $1,000 at the time of the 2021 review, and our 2024 Riley Defense review noted the ZPAP and PSA’s GF5 dominated the $850 to $950 tier at the time.

Century Arms VSKA: Best Budget American-Made AK (2026)

The VSKA is Century’s answer to the shortage of imported parts, and it was built to take a beating. Century says it shot 12,000 rounds through several VSKAs with no failures while maintaining SAAMI headspace specs, and the trigger group went through a 15,000-round endurance test. The trunnion, bolt carrier, and feed ramp are machined from S7 tool steel billets rather than cast.

Read our full Century Arms VSKA review here.

Our reviewer was pleasantly surprised to shoot 1 to 2 inch groups with cheap steel-cased Tula ammo. It ships with Century’s RAK-1 enhanced trigger, a single-stage pull he called a pleasure to shoot, and a Magpul PMAG, and it fits standard AK furniture and hardware. Century offers a left-side optic mount, though he did not test it.

Key Specs

- Caliber: 7.62×39

- Trunnion: Machined S7 tool steel

- Trigger: Century RAK-1 single stage

Palmetto State Armory AK-105: Best 5.45×39 Carbine (2026)

PSA has become one of the biggest AK builders in America, and the AK-105 is a modern 5.45×39 carbine. Our launch coverage noted it comes as a carbine and a pistol, both with 12.5 inch barrels with a 1:8 twist and Krinkov-style muzzle devices. On the carbine, an extended device is pinned and welded to bring barrel length to 16.2 inches, so it is a legal rifle with short-barrel handling.

Read our full PSA AK-105 launch coverage here.

The 5.45 round shoots flatter and kicks less than 7.62×39, which makes it a great choice for fast shooting. Pricing was expected to be around $1,000 at launch, with stock going fast. This is launch coverage rather than a full review, so check current PSA production and reviews before buying.

Key Specs

- Caliber: 5.45×39

- Barrel: 12.5 inch, 1:8 twist (16.2 inch with pinned device)

- Muzzle: Krinkov-style

- Versions: Carbine and pistol

- Price: About $1,000 at launch

Pros

- Soft-shooting 5.45

- Compact Krinkov look and handling

- American made

- Pistol version available

Cons

- Launch coverage, not a full review

Century Arms C39v2: Best Milled-Receiver AK (2026)

The C39v2 is a U.S.-made milled receiver AK built around a heavy-duty receiver machined from 4140 steel. Century also improved the bolt carrier geometry to increase reliability and durability. It runs a 1:10 twist barrel, Century’s RAK-1 fire control group, and a Magpul MOE AK grip, and our reviewer said the trigger was one of the most commented-on features of the gun when other shooters tried it.

Read our full Century C39v2 review here.

He ran it through drills that required a fair amount of accuracy and found it easily up to the job. Overall length runs 34.75 to 37.25 inches depending on the stock. MSRP ranged from $909.99 for a wood-stocked model to $1,149.99 for Magpul models at the time of the 2017 review. A milled AK is heavier than a stamped one, but it is about as rigid as the platform gets.

Key Specs

- Caliber: 7.62×39

- Receiver: Milled 4140 steel

- Barrel Twist: 1:10

- Trigger: Century RAK-1

- MSRP: $909.99 to $1,149.99 at time of review

Pros

- Rigid milled receiver

- Well-liked trigger

- Magpul options

- American made

Century Arms RAS47: Best Value Stamped AK for Accuracy (2026)

The RAS47 was Century’s first 100 percent American-made AK, and it surprised our reviewer. It has a stamped receiver and a bolt-hold-open safety, which he called an easy but highly useful upgrade, plus a light optics mounting option that does not hang weight out front. Century built it to fix the canted sights and poor build quality that plagued some earlier imported kit guns.

Read our full Century RAS47 review here.

In prone testing at 100 yards, the RAS47 proved more accurate than many off-the-shelf AR-15 carbines, printing five-round groups just over one MOA with Hornady SST, a feat he had considered impossible for the platform. He wished Century had included its own muzzle brake. This is a 2015 review, and the VSKA has since become Century’s mainstream stamped AK, so look for the RAS47 on the used market.

Key Specs

- Caliber: 7.62×39

- Receiver: Stamped, American made

- Safety: Bolt-hold-open safety

- Accuracy: Just over 1 MOA (Hornady SST, 100 yards)

Pros

- Excellent accuracy for an AK

- Bolt-hold-open safety

- Lightweight optic mount

- American made

Cons

- 2015 review

IWI Galil ACE: Best Premium Modernized AK (2026)

The Galil ACE is the AK refined by people who used it in combat. Our .308 review describes a milled steel receiver, a 16 inch cold hammer-forged, chrome-lined barrel with a 1:12 twist, ambidextrous safety and magazine release, and a two-stage trigger with a flat face that breaks at about 5 pounds. The .308 model weighs 8.7 pounds and accepts SR25-pattern magazines, and the folding stock lets it fit in most carbine cases.

Read our full IWI Galil ACE .308 review here.

Our earlier coverage of the 7.62×39 ACE, which feeds from standard AK magazines, praised the left-side charging handle, oversized magazine well, and a clean 5 pound trigger with no creep that the reviewer called one of the best he had felt on a military grade weapon. That 7.62×39 coverage listed MSRP at $1,749, with early street prices of $1,400 to $1,700 at the time. It is not cheap, but it is the most modern AK design here.

Key Specs

- Calibers: 7.62×39, 5.56, 5.45×39, .308 (by model)

- Receiver: Milled steel

- Barrel: 16 inch CHF, chrome-lined (.308)

- Trigger: About 5 lb

- Weight: 8.7 lb (.308)

- MSRP: $1,749 (7.62×39) at time of review

Pros

- Fully ambidextrous controls

Rifle Dynamics is one of the best-known AK builders in the country, and our coverage of its NATO AK described a fully overhauled rifle built in 5.56 so it shares ammo with your AR.

Rifle Dynamics is one of the best-known AK builders in the country, and our coverage of its NATO AK described a fully overhauled rifle built in 5.56 so it shares ammo with your AR. Our writer called Rifle Dynamics guns without a doubt some of the best AKs available, with the same treatment the company gives its 7.62×39 overhauls.

Pricing started at $2,450 at launch, which is in line with other Rifle Dynamics overhauls. This is launch coverage rather than a full range test, and it is the most expensive rifle on this list. If you want a custom-grade AK and do not want to learn to build one yourself, this is the level to shop.
