A good 10x binocular finds the animal. A spotting scope tells you whether that buck is a shooter, whether that ram is legal, and whether that bullet hit the steel at 900 yards or kicked up dirt behind it. If you hunt open country or shoot long range, a quality spotter is not a luxury. It saves you miles of walking and a lot of bad decisions.

I have spent more hours behind spotting scopes than I care to count, from a WWII-era fixed 20x military scope to glass that costs more than some rifles. The lesson is simple: cheap glass costs you time and eyestrain, but you do not need to spend a fortune to get something that works. What matters is matching the scope to how you actually use it, whether that is packing it into the backcountry, spotting at the range, or glassing from the truck.

Every scope on this list has a GunsAmerica Digest review behind it, and the field notes come from our reviewers’ time with them. Some reviews are several years old, so prices are from the time of review. A spotter is also only as good as what holds it steady, so read our <a href="https://gunsamerica.com/digest/leupold-carbon-tripod-review/" target="_blank" class="clickTracking" campaign="best-spotting-scopes" title="Best Spotting Scopes (2026): Hunting, Range & Here is what matters.

Magnification

Most spotters zoom from about 15x to 60x. More magnification sounds better, but mirage, shake, and dimmer images make the top end less useful than the box suggests. Our reviewers found themselves spending most of their time at the low and middle of the range, saving high power for long distances and calm air.

Objective Lens Size

Bigger objectives, like 80mm and 85mm, gather more light for dawn and dusk and give sharper images at high power. They also add weight and bulk. A 60mm scope is lighter and easier to pack, with some loss in low light.

Angled Or Straight

Angled eyepieces let you glass a hillside comfortably with a lower tripod and are easier to share among shooters of different heights. Straight scopes are more intuitive for finding a target and work well from a vehicle window. Angled bodies take a little practice.

Weight And Size

A range spotter can be heavy. A backpack hunting spotter should be as light as you can tolerate. Remember that you will also carry a tripod, so total system weight is what matters.

Mounting And Reticles

Arca-Swiss compatible feet are the new standard and pair with most modern tripods. Some scopes offer mil or MOA reticles, which help you call corrections at the range. A reticle eyepiece is a big help for long range shooting.

Image Stabilization

Stabilized spotters are new and they work, letting you glass at 30x or more without a tripod. They cost more and need batteries, but they still work as regular spotters if the batteries die.

Best Spotting Scopes Ranked: 2026 Product Roundup

Vortex Razor HD 27-60×85: Best for Overall Performance (2026)

The Vortex Razor HD 27-60×85 has been around a while and is still one of the best high-end spotting scopes on the market. Our reviewer used it glassing glaciers in Iceland, backpack hunting elk in Colorado, hunting whitetail and pronghorn, and in a PRS match. He said light transmission let him spot bucks that other high-end optics could not yet show, and that he had never seen bullet traces as clearly. It has index-matched HD lenses with ArmorTek coatings, an integrated sunshade, a removable eyepiece with MOA and MRAD reticle options available, and a rotating Arca-Swiss foot for quick leveling. It held up through freezing rain and 100-plus degree dust. The catch is size: at 65.6 ounces it is big for backpacking, and he said a smaller scope would have suited wooded country better.

Read our full Vortex Razor HD 27-60×85 review here.

Key Specs

Magnification: 27-60x

Objective: 85mm

Field of View: 117-68 ft at 1,000 yards

Eye Relief: 16.7-17mm

Length: 15.5 in

Weight: 65.6 oz

Price: $2,399 MSRP (about $1,700 street) at time of review

Pros

Outstanding clarity and light transmission

Arca-Swiss foot rotates for leveling

Reticle eyepieces available

Cons

Heavy for backpacking

Expensive

Big for timber hunting

🛒 Check Current Price for Vortex Razor HD 27-60×85 on GunsAmerica

SIG Sauer Oscar 6 HDX Pro: Best for Handheld Backcountry Glassing (2026)

Image-stabilized spotting scopes are brand new, and the SIG Oscar 6 HDX Pro is our reviewer’s pick of the two he tested. An internal gyroscope counteracts movement in real time, and at 32x he tracked cattle over a mile away and glassed for bears without touching a tripod. On a tripod, stabilization also cleans up wind shake and lets you run a lighter tripod. It is armored in tan rubber, has an Arca-Swiss plate built into the base, and runs on two AA batteries for about 50 hours, which he preferred because you can carry spares. SIG covers it with a full lifetime warranty including electronics. He noted a possible tiny loss of sharpness at full power with stabilization on, but said the steady image more than makes up for it.

Read our full SIG Oscar 6 HDX Pro vs Kite APC review here.

Key Specs

Magnification: 16-32x

Objective: 60mm HDX ED glass

Power: 2 AA batteries (50 hours)

Weight: About 47 oz

Warranty: Full lifetime, including electronics

Price: $1,999 MSRP at time of review

Pros

Glass at 32x without a tripod

Swappable AA batteries

Lifetime electronics warranty

Cons

Lower top magnification than traditional spotters

Heavy for a 60mm scope

Pricey

🛒 Check Current Price for SIG Oscar 6 HDX Pro on GunsAmerica

Leupold SX-5 Santiam HD 27-55×80: Best for Western Big Game (2026)

Our reviewer carried the angled Leupold SX-5 Santiam HD and a tripod several hundred miles on foot and horseback through a western season, glassing antelope, deer, elk, and bighorn sheep. It got rained on, snowed on, fogged in, and frozen, and never quit. He said the glass and big 80mm objective let him see things at dawn and dusk he could not have made out with other optics, and he filmed a 1,007-yard elk shot through it with a PhoneSkope adapter. He sometimes wished for a 20x bottom end, but usually stayed around 30x at 500 to 1,000 yards. Stabilization worked just as well: he watched cattle over a mile away handheld, and on a tripod it cancels wind and shake. It tops out at 35x, though he could not see a real difference from the SIG at 32x, and glass quality was too close to call. The big difference is power. The Kite uses an internal rechargeable battery with USB-C charging and about 30 hours of run time, which is clean and convenient but means you are done if it dies in the backcountry. He recommended it for day hunters and truck-based glassers. The warranty is 30 years on optics and 5 years on electronics.

Read our full Kite APC Stabilized 60 ED review here.

Key Specs

Magnification: 17-35x

Objective: 60mm ED glass

Power: Internal rechargeable, USB-C (30 hours)

Weight: 47.5 oz

Warranty: 30 years optics, 5 years electronics

Price: $2,399 MSRP at time of review

Pros

Stabilization as good as the SIG

USB-C charging

Sleek profile with no battery compartment

Cons

Cannot swap batteries in the field

Shorter electronics warranty

Most expensive scope here

🛒 Check Current Price for Kite APC Stabilized 60 ED on GunsAmerica

Vortex Diamondback 20-60×60: Best for Lightweight Budget (2026)

Our reviewer carried the Vortex Diamondback 20-60×60 through a full season of South Dakota tags, whitetails, waterfowl, mule deer, and elk, and it rode in his truck’s back seat for a month without losing a step. It did its best work from 20x to 40x, sharp enough to count points on a buck, ID ducks across a lake, and check elk for collars. It did well in low light and never fogged below freezing. The real standout is size: 14 inches and 33.8 ounces, where many 60x scopes weigh 40 to 60 ounces. Downsides were mirage in midday heat, which plagues nearly every spotter, and softer images at the highest powers. Vortex backs it with its lifetime warranty. It has a first focal plane mil-hash reticle, ED Prime glass with RainGuard HD coating, and Picatinny rails at 3, 6, and 9 o’clock for a red dot, light, or rangefinder. Our reviewer checked the reticle at 100 meters and found 1 mil matched 10 centimeters exactly. He ran it at an Accuracy 1st course, where classmates found the clarity on par with a Leupold Mark 4 and Bushnell’s own military Elite Tactical LMSS, though the LMSS felt better built. He added a red dot on top to get on target fast at high power, a trick that also helped him point out wildlife to tourists in Yellowstone. The box includes a real O-ring sealed hard case with locking latches and foam, a soft case, and a small tripod with a pan head, extras he had never seen included on any spotter, even multi-thousand-dollar ones. In a walk-back test against a Nightforce TS-82 that costs about six times as much, both resolved paperwork at 75 and 100 meters at 60 power, and the Prime ran out of focus at 120 meters while the Nightforce did not. He spotted vapor trails from 224 Valkyrie at 450 meters and called it completely adequate for spotting 1,000 yards and in. For western hunters who live behind glass, the Leupold SX-5 Santiam HD is its equal in the field. If you want to glass without a tripod, the new stabilized scopes are the real deal, and our reviewer would take the SIG Oscar 6 HDX Pro into the backcountry and the Kite APC for truck-based hunting. A spotter works best alongside a quality pair from our best hunting binoculars guide and one of the best rangefinders for the shot.

On a budget, the Vortex Diamondback is the lightest 60x spotter here, the Bushnell Legend T-Series gives range shooters a calibrated reticle, and the Bushnell Prime comes with everything you need in the box. Whatever you buy, put it on a solid tripod and learn to glass slowly.

You can find spotting scopes, tripods, and every other kind of optic from sellers nationwide at GunsAmerica.com.
