NSSF <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nssf.org\/articles\/guntubers-face-new-squeeze-as-youtube-tightens-firearm-content-rules\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"youtube-gun-content-policy-guntubers\" title=\"YouTube\u2019s New Gun Policy Puts \u2018GunTubers\u2019 in a Bind\">says<\/a> the change could put firearm reviewers in an almost impossible position.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here is the brass-tacks version.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">YouTube now prohibits branded content featuring guns or ammunition. The platform defines branded content as material influenced by a company in exchange for something valuable. That can include money, sponsorships or free products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The restriction covers the entire video, not only the sponsored segment. YouTube says it may remove content that violates the policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube vs. Gun Tubers Are They Coming for Firearm Content?\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/q6nHRiLW9yU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the same time, Federal Trade Commission guidance tells creators to disclose material relationships with companies. That includes payments, free products, discounts and other benefits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Creators should disclose those relationships even when they believe their opinions remain independent, according to the FTC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NSSF says that creates a serious problem for firearm-focused creators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Disclose the free firearm or manufacturer relationship, and YouTube may classify the video as prohibited branded content. Fail to disclose it, and the creator could violate FTC guidance and YouTube\u2019s own disclosure rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The policy also leaves plenty of gray areas. It does not clearly explain whether a temporary firearm loan counts as a free product. It also raises questions about unrelated sponsors supporting videos that happen to feature guns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nssf.org\/articles\/guntubers-face-new-squeeze-as-youtube-tightens-firearm-content-rules\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"youtube-gun-content-policy-guntubers\" title=\"YouTube\u2019s New Gun Policy Puts \u2018GunTubers\u2019 in a Bind\">Sept. 28 report<\/a>, NSSF also questioned the timing of the change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The<a href=\"https:\/\/smokinggun.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"youtube-gun-content-policy-guntubers\" title=\"YouTube\u2019s New Gun Policy Puts \u2018GunTubers\u2019 in a Bind\"> Smoking Gun<\/a>, an Everytown for Gun Safety Support Fund project, released a report portraying firearm creators as part of an industry-supported marketing network. That report called for tougher enforcement against gun content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-see-also-sig-sauer-p385-new-fcu-recoil-system-magstrap-grip-and-five-models\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/sig-p385-review-new-modular-9mm\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"youtube-gun-content-policy-guntubers\" title=\"YouTube\u2019s New Gun Policy Puts \u2018GunTubers\u2019 in a Bind\">SEE ALSO: SIG Sauer P385: New FCU, Recoil System, MagStrap Grip and Five Models<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">YouTube updated its policy while the report was being prepared. NSSF stressed that it remains unknown whether Everytown influenced the decision. Still, the organization believes the timing deserves scrutiny.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NSSF\u2019s larger point is straightforward. Receiving access to a firearm does not automatically turn a reviewer into a manufacturer\u2019s spokesperson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A creator might buy a gun, borrow one, receive a sample or accept a paid sponsorship. Those arrangements are different. None automatically proves that a company controlled the review.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The debate also reaches beyond YouTube.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Firearm reviewer and attorney James Reeves <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/james-reeves-subpoena-smith-wesson-lawsuit\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"youtube-gun-content-policy-guntubers\" title=\"YouTube\u2019s New Gun Policy Puts \u2018GunTubers\u2019 in a Bind\">recently<\/a> disclosed that he received a subpoena connected to the Highland Park lawsuit against Smith &amp; Wesson. Reeves said the request broadly defined advertising to include unpaid social-media content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NSSF sees a common thread. Platforms and gun-control litigants are increasingly treating independent firearm coverage as corporate marketing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That could make honest product reviews harder to produce and easier to remove. Creators face more uncertainty. Manufacturers may hesitate to provide test samples. Viewers could lose access to detailed reviews from people who actually used the products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NSSF\u2019s bottom line is hard to argue with: Transparency should tell viewers who supplied or funded something.
