Now, <em>CBS News<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/trump-doj-gangster-weapons-gun-restrictions-appeal\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"trump-doj-goa-nfa-registration-appeal\" title=\"Trump Won\u2019t Appeal GOA\u2019s NFA Registration Victory\">reports<\/a> that President Donald Trump directed the Justice Department not to appeal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That gives GOA plenty to celebrate. He permanently blocked enforcement of the challenged provisions against the protected parties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Machine guns and destructive devices were not included in that relief.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The injunction is also not nationwide. It protects the named plaintiffs and, where applicable, their current and future members and customers. That group includes <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/nics-false-denial-florida-william-brewer\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"trump-doj-goa-nfa-registration-appeal\" title=\"Trump Won\u2019t Appeal GOA\u2019s NFA Registration Victory\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"7706\">GOA and Gun Owners<\/a> Foundation members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-trump-reportedly-says-no-appeal\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Trump Reportedly Says No Appeal<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>CBS News<\/em> reported that Trump personally instructed DOJ not to challenge the decision. A Justice Department official also said the department planned to notify Congress that it would not appeal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The government\u2019s appeal deadline is Oct. 5. The organization credited its members, fellow plaintiffs and the Trump administration for moving the case forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gun-control <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/state-lawmakers-launch-new-gun-control-organization\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"trump-doj-goa-nfa-registration-appeal\" title=\"Trump Won\u2019t Appeal GOA\u2019s NFA Registration Victory\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"7709\">organization<\/a> GIFFORDS offered the opposite reaction. Executive Director Emma Brown told <em>CBS<\/em> that abandoning the appeal would represent a failure to protect public safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-now-comes-the-atf-guidance\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Now Comes the ATF Guidance<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The biggest remaining question is how the ruling will work at <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/ak-47-hog-blaster\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"trump-doj-goa-nfa-registration-appeal\" title=\"Trump Won\u2019t Appeal GOA\u2019s NFA Registration Victory\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"7707\">gun counters<\/a> and inside ATF\u2019s processing system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DOJ told <em>CBS<\/em> that ATF would issue guidance \u201csoon.\u201d Dealers need to know which forms and procedures still apply. Buyers also need clarity about membership, covered transactions and remaining federal requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The decision does not erase prohibited-person laws, the <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/only-2-bump-stocks-turned-over-to-vermont-state-police-ahead-of-deadline\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"trump-doj-goa-nfa-registration-appeal\" title=\"Trump Won\u2019t Appeal GOA\u2019s NFA Registration Victory\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"7705\">Gun Control Act or applicable state<\/a> restrictions. A commercial firearm purchase may still require the usual dealer records and background check.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For now, GOA has earned its celebration. But the next important document will not be another campaign speech or YouTube video.
