The rumor was that this company was making suppressors that reduced sound and recoil better than the top-performing cans on the market, while being both lighter and shorter. I had been researching tirelessly for my next suppressor and was heavily considering either the PTR Vent 1 or the Liberty Precision Machine Mach L. I currently own the Liberty Precision Machine Mach S, and I love it. However, I wanted even more sound suppression. At the time, the only way I thought I could achieve that was with more weight and length.

The Tenet Vesper 6.5 comes in a nice package, with a custom wrench and 3D-printed level for timing the Horizon Brake.

Both of these suppressors weighed well over 10 oz and were over 9 inches long. Although I wasn’t overly excited about the extra weight and length they would add over the LPM Mach S, I wanted a ridiculously quiet suppressor, and volume was the only way I thought I could achieve that.

Outdoor Life Suppressor Test: The Result That Changed My Mind

Then came the Outdoor Life test, which put over 100 different suppressors and brakes on display to measure recoil and suppression. Tenet participated and walked away with bragging rights for the quietest suppressor at the muzzle tested, edging out the PTR Vent 1 by the slimmest of margins. The most impressive part of the test was not that the Tenet beat the PTR in suppression, but that it did it while weighing significantly less and measuring shorter in overall length.

The Tenet model in the Outdoor Life test was called the Tenet Reserve. The less length we can add to our barrels, the better.

The threads on the Tenet Vesper 6.5 are recessed into the suppressor body. For reasons I don’t fully understand, some suppressors can make certain rifles less accurate, probably due to barrel harmonics.

This is not something I am willing to live with. All of my rifles have to be very accurate, or I won’t own them. Same goes for a suppressor. If a suppressor makes a rifle less accurate, it has no place in my safe.

After needing only three rounds to zero this rifle, I knew the Vesper would have no negative effect on accuracy.

The Vesper was going on the end of my 6.5 Creedmoor, which is mainly my predator rifle that has to be accurate. I knew I would have to rezero my rifle for the new suppressor.

The first shot through the Tenet was high left. I shot once more to confirm it would group. I have a lot of confidence in the rifle, and the Vesper only added to it.

How Quiet Is the Tenet Vesper 6.5? My cousin was with me, and the first shot was 800 yards away. I fired, hit, fired again, hit.

I took a video of this while I was shooting. Microphones in phones do not do a great job of replicating the actual sound of a gunshot, but it was still fun to watch back. The sound of the action feeding another round into the chamber is louder than the shots in the video.

My cousin looked at me and said the sound of the bullet hitting the target was louder than the gunshot. I was blown away by how quiet the Vesper was in open country without objects around to bounce sound back at me.

It is actually laughably quiet. It makes a sound unlike any other suppressor I have ever shot.

Tenet states that the phase-shift technology occurs in the middle section of the suppressor.

Tenet Phase Shift Technology: The Strange “Plunk” You Have to Hear

Tenet states they use phase-shift technology in the Vesper. This technology works like noise-canceling headphones, but without any electronics, using engineering to crash sound waves into one another to cancel them out.

It is a sound that is very hard to describe, but if the Vesper is shot in open country without any objects bouncing sound back at me, I can hear it working plain as day. To my ear, it sounds like a “plunk.”

It’s like picking up a rock and gently tossing it into a calm pond, “plunk,” as the water swallows the rock and then all sound is muffled when it goes under the surface, but in a more pneumatic way. It’s kinda like a nail gun, but quieter.

This sound must be the phase shift technology at work. It is very hard to describe, but it is remarkable.

I have asked several other people to try and describe this sound for me. They all make a funny face and make a sound that I can’t put into words. It’s very funny to watch and listen to people describe it. It’s just one of those things you’ll have to hear to believe.

I bought my first suppressor in 2010 and have been shooting suppressed ever since. I have been to many long-range tournaments where suppressors are required to enter, and I have never heard a suppressor sound like the Vesper does.

Whatever technology Tenet used on the Vesper is original, it’s awesome, and it works!

From the Range to Predator Country

The next morning I took the Vesper out to look for a coyote. I found a pair of them hunting together on my friend’s property. I stopped the vehicle, popped up with the 6.5, and ranged the coyote at 713 yards.

I sent the round and was shocked by the impact. The fact that I hit the coyote was not the shocking part, it was the sound of the impact! With the shot being suppressed so significantly, I was able to hear the bullet impact the coyote in a way I was not used to!

My plan for the Vesper is to someday test it against some of the top sound-reducing suppressors on the market with a sound meter. However, I don’t have one, and until I can buy or borrow one, I only have my ears and other people’s opinions to go off of.

It is said that the human ear cannot detect a difference of 3 dB, so comparing suppressors against each other without a sound meter is not the fairest way to test them.

My opinion, and everyone else who has heard it, is that the Vesper is shockingly quiet. That’s why I bought it: sound reduction. I was willing to pay a hefty weight and length penalty that comes with other suppressors in the same sound-suppression category, but thanks to the Vesper, I don’t have to.

Pew Science Comparisons: Putting the Vesper in Context

The Pew Science data gives useful context for two of the suppressors I had been comparing against the Vesper.

The PTR Vent 1 is listed at 12.3 oz with a length of 8.74 inches on their website. Pew Science lists it at 15.4 oz and 9.1 inches long on their results page. It received an incredibly high suppression rating of 57.3.

The LPM Mach L is listed at 12.7 oz with a direct thread adapter and 9.25 inches long. Pew Science lists it at 13.2 oz and 9.28 inches long on their review. It received a very high suppression rating of 53.5. I weighed my friend’s LPM Mach L, and it weighed 13.6 oz.

Pew Science has not done a review on the Tenet Vesper, so I only had the data from the Outdoor Life review, which included the PTR Vent 1.

Both of these suppressors, the PTR Vent 1 and Liberty Precision Mach L, tested extremely well with Pew Science for suppressing supersonic .308 ammunition. According to the Outdoor Life test, the Tenet Reserve suppressed sound better than the PTR Vent 1, and according to Tenet, the Vesper reduces sound even better than the Reserve.

I can’t say for sure which suppressor is the quietest without a sound meter, since the human ear can only differentiate about a 3 dB difference. I believe the Tenet Vesper is in the same sound-suppression class or better as these other two great-performing suppressors. Data from Outdoor Life, Silencer Summit, and Pew Science support the comparison.

Only the Vesper does it at a weight of 9.77 oz and 8.25 inches long, with an overall barrel length penalty of only 7 ¼ inches. This is very close to the same length and weight of my LPM Mach S, but with substantially more sound suppression!

This is significant, as I bought an S can because I feel K cans don’t offer enough sound suppression, but I don’t like the length and weight of an L can. Tenet designed this can for hunters. Excess length and weight were not an option.

Horizon Single-Port Brake: Trading More Sound for Less Recoil

I also ordered a Horizon Brake with the Vesper. Tenet claims it adds 8 dB at the shooter’s ear, as it redirects sound back toward the shooter. This would put the Vesper in the same category of a good-performing S-sized can, which is still hearing safe for a few shots.

The addition of the single-port Horizon Brake definitely changes the shot control for the shooter. Expect much more of it.

My thought process in buying this brake was to use it in competition, where I will be wearing ear pro anyway to protect my hearing from other shooters’ rifle shots.

Adding the brake completely changes the suppressor. It does make it louder, which I do not like. However, it greatly reduces recoil, and the shooter can easily spot their own shots.

The Outdoor Life test showed a recoil reduction of around 27 percent with the Horizon 1 port brake attached vs unattached. When shooting the Vesper without the Horizon Brake on paper at 100 yards with my scope on 22x, it would take me a second after the shot to see my impact.

With the Horizon Brake attached, I knew where the round impacted immediately. From my experience shooting it, I would say that a 27 percent recoil reduction with the brake attached feels right. It will blow some air back in your face, so it works very well.

If I were running this can on a bigger magnum caliber, like my 7 PRC, I would be very tempted to run the brake. My 7 PRC is a lightweight hunting rifle, and being able to spot shots on game would be greatly beneficial.

Although it adds around 8 dB at the shooter’s ear, that would be acceptable in a hunting situation where the shooter should only be getting off a shot or two for the season. If the .30 Vesper ever comes back into stock, I’m going to get one for my Seekins Element Hunter in 7 PRC.

Tenet includes a 3-D printed level for timing their Horizon Brake. It’s a very simple process.

Tenet’s Claimed 40 dB Reduction and the Horizon Brake Tradeoff

Tenet claims that both the Vesper 6.5 and 30 cal reduce dB at the shooter’s ear by 40 dB! While I cannot confirm this without a sound meter, my Vesper suppresses my shots more than any other suppressor I have shot.

Adding 8 dB to the Vesper with the Horizon Brake will still give you approximately a 32 dB reduction at the shooter’s ear. On a big magnum like a 300 PRC, let’s say a bare muzzle at the shooter’s ear is 162 dB. The Vesper with a Horizon Brake attached should get the dB level down to around 132 or less, which is still very much on the hearing-safe side for minimum exposure.

The shooter can then get the best of both worlds: great suppression and great muzzle control. Way to go, Tenet.

Does the Horizon Brake Change Zero? I Put It on Paper

The 6.5 Creedmoor is already a light-recoiling rifle, and my personal setup is not lightweight, so I will not be using the brake for coyote hunting, as I prefer maximum sound suppression.

But if I ever enter into a long-range tournament with the Vesper, it will absolutely have the brake attached to it.
