We shot SIG\u2019s new modular 9mm platform at SIG NEXT 2026 to see what its new FCU, low bore axis, recoil system and MagStrap grip actually bring to the range.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SIG Sauer introduced the new P385 9mm pistol at SIG NEXT 2026, and this is not simply another variation of the P320. The P385 is a new striker-fired pistol platform built around a new serialized Fire Control Unit, a low bore axis, SIG\u2019s Recoil Dampening System, a modular MagStrap grip and P320 magazine compatibility. It is not a P320 FCU or P365 FCU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The P385 also introduces SIG\u2019s patented Trigger Block. Instead of the conventional protruding trigger safety blade used on many striker-fired pistols, the safety mechanism sits flush with the face of the flat trigger. Pressing the trigger moves the Trigger Block with it. SIG describes it as a redundant drop-safety mechanism designed without changing the feel of the trigger face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The trigger on the pistols I shot had some initial take-up followed by a defined wall, a small amount of movement through the wall and a tactile reset. Manual-safety versions are also available, with ambidextrous thumb safeties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-sig-p385-recoil-system-how-it-stays-flatter-under-fire\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">SIG P385 Recoil System: How It Stays Flatter Under Fire<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Recoil management is one of the P385\u2019s major design priorities. SIG lowered the bore axis substantially and added the SIG Recoil Dampening System, or SRDS, inside the grip module.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SRDS uses a recoil-dampening component to absorb vibration and reduce the shock transferred through the pistol during cycling. Combined with the low bore axis, the system is intended to reduce muzzle movement and improve sight recovery between shots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SIG takes that concept farther with the compensated models. The P385-MACH3D uses a 3.9-inch carbon-steel barrel and SIG\u2019s MACH3D compensator. SIG claims the system reduces muzzle rise by more than 30 percent. During my range time, the MACH3D was noticeably flatter than the other P385 configurations and had one of the more effective compensators I have shot on a polymer-framed handgun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The P385-COMP instead uses a 4-inch barrel with ports cut in the slide, avoiding the external MACH3D compensator.<\/p>\n\n\n<a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/search?keyword=SIG%20Sauer%20P385\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"sig-p385-review-new-modular-9mm\" title=\"SIG Sauer P385: New FCU, Recoil System, MagStrap Grip and Five Models\" style=\"display:inline-block;text-decoration:none;font-weight:700;line-height:1;border-radius:9999px;background:#eef4ff;color:#1849a9;border:1px solid #d8e0f0;padding:10px 16px\">\n  \ud83d\uded2 Check Current Price for SIG Sauer P385 on GunsAmerica\n<\/a>\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-sig-p385-magstrap-grip-changes-size-without-a-new-module\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">SIG P385 MagStrap Grip Changes Size Without a New Module<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The P385 does not require replacing the complete grip module to change grip dimensions. SIG\u2019s MagStrap system changes both grip circumference and grip length.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Small, medium and large MagStraps measure approximately 1.95, 2.15 and 2.25 inches around the backstrap and front finger groove. The system can also change the grip from a 17-round full-size configuration to a shorter 15-round flush-fit configuration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SIG calls the new laser-cut surface ReActive grip texture. It feels relatively smooth when sliding your hand across it, but becomes more aggressive as grip pressure increases. That was one of the more noticeable ergonomic changes during my time shooting the P385.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-p320-mags-sig-loc-optics-and-full-ambidextrous-controls\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">P320 Mags, SIG-LOC Optics and Full Ambidextrous Controls<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The P385 retains compatibility with standard SIG P320 magazines. SIG notes that older P320 magazines with the original round basepad require removal of the P385\u2019s metal magwell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The pistol also gets a SIG-LOC PRO optic-ready stainless-steel slide (Delta Point Pro footprint), XRAY3 day\/night sights on standard configurations and an M1913 accessory rail. Controls are fully ambidextrous, including the slide catch, optional manual safety and magazine catch. SIG also added a shield around the slide catch specifically to reduce shooter-induced interference with the control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The full-size P385 uses a 4.7-inch carbon-steel barrel and weighs 29.6 ounces with a magazine. The standard configuration ships with one 17-round and one 21-round steel magazine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-several-hundred-rounds-through-the-sig-p385-with-a-caveat\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Several Hundred Rounds Through the SIG P385, With a Caveat<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I put several hundred rounds through multiple P385 pistols during SIG NEXT without experiencing a malfunction, and I did not personally observe another shooter experience one. That was a manufacturer-hosted event with SIG-provided pistols and ammunition, however, so it should not be confused with independent reliability testing. The new serialized Fire Control Unit, lower bore axis, Recoil Dampening System and MagStrap grip make the P385 its own modular pistol platform, while P320 magazine compatibility keeps one important connection to SIG\u2019s existing ecosystem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The P385-MACH3D stood out during my range time because of how flat it shot, but several hundred rounds at SIG NEXT are only a first look.
