Add 16+1 rounds, excellent accuracy, an $899 MSRP, and more than 400 rounds without a malfunction, and this little 9mm gets difficult to ignore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image Compact<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are a lot of compact double-stack 1911s on the market now, but many of them aren&#8217;t really that compact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Manufacturers shorten the barrel and slide, then leave essentially the same fat double-stack grip hanging underneath. More importantly, Girsan and Check-Mate developed a new slim 16-round magazine to fit it. The texture is aggressive enough to lock the pistol into your hand without feeling excessively sharp or abrasive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite the smaller dimensions, the flush-fitting magazines hold 16 rounds. I ran more than 400 rounds through this pistol with zero malfunctions. That included 115-, 124- and 147-grain ammunition and two different shooters. We did not clean it during the test, tune it or start swapping parts. It simply ran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For a pistol I might actually carry every day, that matters more to me than almost anything else. For a 3.4-inch pistol designed around concealed carry, the accuracy was excellent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is also easy to shoot quickly. Mine was slightly gritty when new but became noticeably smoother as the round count climbed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When I finally put a trigger scale on it during filming, it broke at 4 pounds, 12 ounces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More important than the number, it has a short take-up, defined wall, and clean break. I actually prefer that weight on a pistol intended for daily carry rather than the two-pound trigger I might use on a competition 2011.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The CMX XXX also deletes the traditional 1911 grip safety. If you&#8217;re going to carry a short, crisp single-action trigger cocked and locked, you need to understand the platform and use a quality holster that properly protects the trigger and safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-optics-ready-tight-fit-and-no-cheap-gun-feel\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Optics Ready, Tight Fit, and No Cheap-Gun Feel<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fit and finish on the CMX XXX were good throughout. Slide-to-frame fit was tight, barrel lockup was solid, and nothing about the pistol felt cheap despite its relatively low price. One screw was stubborn enough that I eventually stripped the head and had to hammer a Torx bit into it to get it loose. It is that Girsan and Check-Mate actually reworked the magazine and grip dimensions instead of shortening the top half of the pistol and calling the job finished.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That smaller grip still carries 16+1 rounds of 9mm, and in my testing the pistol backed up the concept with excellent accuracy and more than 400 rounds without a malfunction. The trigger improved as the round count climbed, the controls remain familiar for experienced 1911 shooters, and the optics-ready slide and four-slot rail make it easy to configure as a carry gun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I still would not pretend an $899 pistol automatically becomes the equivalent of every premium 2011 simply because it ran well for me. Long-term durability, materials, manufacturing and hand fitting still matter.
