Now, documents obtained by <em>GunsAmerica<\/em> confirm what the plaintiffs want from Reeves and why he believes other firearm creators should pay attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The subpoena comes from <em>Roberts v. <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/sw-mp15-sport-ii\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"james-reeves-subpoena-smith-wesson-lawsuit\" title=\"James Reeves Says Highland Park Lawsuit Hit Him With a Subpoena\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"7669\">Smith &amp; Wesson<\/a> Brands, Inc.<\/em>, an Illinois civil lawsuit stemming from the July 4, 2022, Highland Park parade shooting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here is the most important distinction: Reeves is not a defendant. The subpoena does not accuse him of committing a crime or causing the shooting. Its requests generally cover Jan. 1, 2015, through Dec. 31, 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The subpoena contains 11 separate requests. Among other things, it seeks:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Social-media posts and other content featuring Smith &amp; Wesson M&amp;P <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/ak-47-hog-blaster\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"james-reeves-subpoena-smith-wesson-lawsuit\" title=\"James Reeves Says Highland Park Lawsuit Hit Him With a Subpoena\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"7672\">firearms or certain semiautomatic rifles<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Communications between Reeves and Smith &amp; Wesson<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Any instructions concerning the content, style, tone or audience of his posts<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Viewer demographics, audience information and web analytics<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Brand-ambassador agreements, contracts and payment records<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Information about firearms or other products Smith &amp; Wesson provided to Reeves<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Records showing whether any social-media account associated with Robert Crimo III interacted with Reeves\u2019 content<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The subpoena also defines \u201cAdvertisement\u201d broadly. Sometimes those arrangements involve sponsorships. Instead, he recommended speaking with an attorney and, when necessary, coordinating with local counsel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-case-against-smith-amp-wesson\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Case Against Smith &amp; Wesson<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ammoland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Roberts-v.-SW-et-al.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"james-reeves-subpoena-smith-wesson-lawsuit\" title=\"James Reeves Says Highland Park Lawsuit Hit Him With a Subpoena\">First Amended Complaint<\/a> was filed by Keely and Jason Roberts, individually and on behalf of their twin sons. The family suffered serious injuries during the Highland Park shooting, which killed seven people and injured 48.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The lawsuit names Smith &amp; Wesson, Bud\u2019s Gun Shop, <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/primary-arms-micro-dot-classic-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"james-reeves-subpoena-smith-wesson-lawsuit\" title=\"James Reeves Says Highland Park Lawsuit Hit Him With a Subpoena\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"7670\">Red Dot Arms<\/a>, Robert Crimo III and Crimo\u2019s father as defendants. It separately lists Cybear Interactive, Watauga Group and Clandestine Media Group as \u201crespondents in discovery,\u201d not defendants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The plaintiffs allege that Smith &amp; Wesson improperly marketed the M&amp;P15 to young men using military imagery, excitement-driven themes and social-media content. They contend that this marketing influenced Crimo\u2019s selection of the rifle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those are allegations made by the plaintiffs. They are not established findings by the court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reeves believes the case represents an attempt to work around the federal <a href=\"https:\/\/uscode.house.gov\/view.xhtml?path=\/prelim@title15\/chapter105&amp;edition=prelim\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"james-reeves-subpoena-smith-wesson-lawsuit\" title=\"James Reeves Says Highland Park Lawsuit Hit Him With a Subpoena\">Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act<\/a>, which generally protects firearm manufacturers and sellers from liability for crimes committed by third parties. The law also contains exceptions, and whether the plaintiffs\u2019 marketing claims fit within one of them remains part of the legal fight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-bottom-line\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bottom Line<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For now, the documents establish three things. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Reeves received a broad subpoena. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It seeks years of content, communications and audience data. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>And its definition of advertising reaches beyond traditional paid promotions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What the documents do not establish is any connection between the subpoena and YouTube\u2019s firearm-content policies. They also do not make Reeves a defendant or prove that his reviews influenced the Highland Park shooter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That broader speculation can wait.
